    In this two day Berkshire Botanical Garden in person course on January 4 and 5 from 9 – 4, learn the art and science of plant propagation with a focus on the basic botany needed to understand and successfully propagate plants. Sexual and asexual propagation methods including sowing seeds, cuttings, grafting, layering, and division will be covered. Students will learn the fascinating science behind propagation along with the various techniques used to create new plants.

    Adam Wheeler started working and playing with plants at Broken Arrow Nursery in 2004 after completing his BS degree in Urban Forestry and Landscape Horticulture at the University of Vermont. His favorite role at Broken Arrow Nursery is plant propagation and the acquisition and development of new plants. Adam is a past recipient of the Young Nursery Professional Award from the New England Nursery Association and is the current Vice President of the North American Maple Society. He loves to share his passion for plants through photography and educational outreach. As a result, he lectures widely on a variety of subjects and is also an adjunct lecturer at Naugatuck Valley Community College and the Berkshire Botanical Garden. With his spare time he enjoys cultivating his eclectic collection of rare and unusual plants, rock climbing and competitive giant pumpkin growing!

  • Thursday, June 20, 5:30 pm – Native Plants with a Twist: Unexpected Excitement from our Native Flora

    On June 20, the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club, in collaboration with Polly Hill Arboretum, will be sponsoring a lecture by Adam Wheeler, Production and Horticulture Manager at Broken Arrow Nursery in Hamden, CT. Adam will speak on “Native Plants with a Twist: Unexpected Excitement from our Native Flora.” Adam stresses that native plants don’t have to be boring! In this informative and educational lecture, he will explore the unique and exceptional slide of our native flora and present his current favorite native trees and shrubs for general garden use. This includes design considerations, cultural requirements, and other critical details. A special emphasis will be given toward unusual variation and unexpected use. Both novice and experts alike will find value in the details provided. This lecture will be held in the Far Barn at Polly Hill Arboretum beginning at 5:00 p.m. Registration is required.     Friday & Saturday, May 10 & 11 – Berkshire Botanical Garden 47th Annual Plants and Answers Sale

    Curated by BBG’s horticulture staff, this year’s Plant Sale features hundreds of perennials, annuals and vegetables with a focus on diversity and nature-based landscaping, a trend toward gardens that are exuberant and alive, out of the uniform and into something comfortable, and welcoming to birds, bees and butterflies.

    As always, the popular “Ask Me” staff and volunteers will be on hand to provide expert advice. All proceeds from the Plant Sale support the Garden’s horticulture and education programs. Garden members receive early buying privileges and a discount on BBG plant purchases. Free admission and free parking.

    Traditionally held on Mother’s Day weekend, the Plants-and-Answers Plant Sale began in 1977 as BBG’s harbinger of spring for gardeners in the Berkshires and beyond. This year’s sale carries on the tradition of supplying the very best robust plants for landscape and container gardens, along with a wide selection of organic vegetable and herb plants. Featured are a selection of plants which attract bees, hummingbirds, butterflies, moths and other pollinators. The Garden’s signature cone-shaped hanging container arrangements will also be available.

  • Saturday, September 24, 10:00 am – 12:30 pm – Propagation by Cuttings with Adam Wheeler

    Come join Adam Wheeler, Horticulture and Container Production Manager at Broken Arrow Nursery for this fun-filled, hands-on workshop focused on the propagation of plants from stem cuttings. Participants will be given a brief lecture that examines the techniques and skills required to grow plants from cuttings. Following the lecture, participants will construct their own home propagation systems and stick a selection of cuttings. The class will take place September 24 at Hollister House Garden, 300 Nettleton Hollow Road in Washington, Connecticut (Berkshires).

    Hollister House Garden, 300 Nettleton Hollow Road in Washington, Connecticut will hold its Annual Rare Plant Sale in September.   • Saturday, May 1, 10:00 am – 11:30 am – Thinking Outside the Box: Using Excellent Plants in Creative Ways

    On Saturday, May 1 at Hollister House & Gardens in Washington, Connecticut, Adam Wheeler of Broken Arrow Nursery in Hamden, Connecticut will share knowledge of  trees, shrubs and conifers that are often overlooked by gardeners and landscape designers when planning gardens.  This expert plantsman will present creative and unique approaches to using these plants. Gain insight into the development of unusual plants, the value and use of foliage color and texture, and creating unexpected accents though and assortment of pruning and training techniques.   Using a strong theme of diversity, Adam will showcase some of the unique varieties and cultivars available to gardeners….many of which should be new to the audience.   In addition, he will emphasize creative ways to utilize more familiar species.  Learn to develop a thought process around the plants we choose to build our gardens with and to reinforce an attitude that gardening is fun and should be as much about the process as the end result.

    Adam will bring a selection of plants from Broken Arrow available for purchase after his talk.

  • Sunday, March 3, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Heirloom Apple Grafting

    Come join Broken Arrow Nurseries grafting guru, Adam Wheeler, on Sunday, March 3 from 1 – 4 at Berkshire Botanical Garden for this hands-on workshop that explores the world of grafting heirloom apples. Participants will be given a brief lecture that explores the methods and intricacies of this time-tested craft. Following the lecture, participants will put this newfound knowledge to work by grafting a few specimen apples of their own to take home.

  • Saturday, September 17, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Growing Giant Pumpkins

    On Saturday, September 17 from 1 – 3 at Berkshire Botanic Garden, join woody plant guru Adam Wheeler of Broken Arrow Nursery for a fun and informative look into the world of competitive pumpkin growing. Learn how to grow plants in the Cucurbita family to bear the biggest and best fruits possible. Although the lecture will focus on how to grow extra-large pumpkins it will also inform gardeners about improving growing conditions for other pumpkin relatives including melons, squash, and cucumbers. And Adam will share his special pumpkin seeds with participants for the next growing season.

    Adam Wheeler is the Propagation and New Plant Development Manager for Broken Arrow Nursery located in Hamden, CT, a specialty nursery with a focus on woody plants.
