  • Saturday, September 22, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Fight the Frost!

Northeast Organic Farming Association’s Cold Weather Gardening workshop will provide gardeners with practical tips and techniques to help their crops fare the cold New England winter. Our goal is to strategically extend our growing season by up to three months (Mar-Dec instead of Apr-Oct) or more if we’re lucky!

Topics covered will include construction of cold frames and low tunnels; other row cover options; strategic warmth-adding techniques and more. We will briefly discuss which vegetables will fare best using this variety of season extension methods though, by the time of our workshop, gardeners should already have most of their cool/cold weather crops in the ground.  The class will take place Saturday, September 22 from 1 – 3 at Brookline High School, 115 Greenough Street in Brookline.  $15 for Brookline High School students and faculty, $25 for NOFA members, and $30 for everyone else.  Contact Drew Love at drew@nofamass.org with questions.  Sign up at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/265120.  Photo from www.waldeneffect.org.

  • Thursday, February 4, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Garden Design: A Perfect Plant Palette

Like dabs of paint and brush strokes in a painting, individual plants and their placement are what creates a garden or yard. It’s easy to walk into a nursery or garden store and become overwhelmed by the wide selection of plants, tools, soil choices, gardening tips, and helpful accessories. With so many choices how is it possible to comprise plant schemes with ease? This class will give an overview of the first steps to take in creating your perfect plant palette. You  will discuss the basic design features of plants and how to use them in combination to make your available garden space into the retreat you wish it to be. Topics will include using plant forms to define outdoor rooms, using leaves and/or bark as a prominent feature of the garden, and using flowers and fruits to accent the garden. You’ll talk about color theory and the use of texture to create a balanced composition in the landscape.  This course, sponsored by Brookline Adult Education, will be held on Thursday, February 4, beginning at 7 pm, at Brookline High School.  The fee is $28, and you may register on-line at www.brooklineadulted.org, or by phone at 617-730-2700.  The instructor, Kimberly Turner, is a principal of KDTurner Design, a landscape architecture firm in Newton.  She has a background in both horticulture and landscape architecture and is the author of the soon to be published book Botany For Designers.

  • Wednesdays, January 20, 27, and February 3, 7:00 – 9:00 pm – Flower Arranging: Simple and Tasteful

Indoor floral arrangements during the winter months are most successful when you incorporate flowers or branches that are interesting to look at. Winter is not the season to focus on bunches of blooming flowers, but rather to create airy, simple, and tasteful arrangements. In this class you will discuss  choices for long-lasting winter arrangements, the use of unusual vases, and which flowers will work best. You’ll practice a variety of floral arrangement styles, using everyday and unusual flowers and branches for tall and thin, or short and subtle looks. You will discuss equipment and reference materials used by florists, how to pair your arrangement with a room, and how to best care for your flowers before, during, and after they have been arranged. Please bring a few vases, a pair of scissors, glue sticks, and a glue gun to class. The instructor will provide the fresh flowers and branches, low-floral dishes, floral tape, and wires. A $50 materials fees is payable to the instructor at the first class.  This series of three classes, to be held Wednesday January 20, January 27, and February 3 at Brookline High School, is sponsored by Brookline Adult Education, and the fee for the three classes is $85.  You may register on line at www.brooklineadulted.org, or by calling 617-730-2700.
