  • Saturday, April 13, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm, and Sunday, April 14, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Cactus & Succulent Show and Sale

    The Connecticut Cactus and Succulent Society will celebrate its 36th Annual Cactus and Succulent Show and Sale on Saturday, April 13th and Sunday April 14th. at the Bristol Senior Community Center, 240 Stafford Avenue in Bristol. Connecticut.

    This is the largest show of its kind in the Eastern U.S., with over two thousand visitors each year.

    The judged show has more than 100 categories with over 500 entries. In addition, there will be at least 15 vendors with a huge selection of C&S plants, pots, soils, and books.

    The sales area will be open to the public on Saturday from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. and on Sunday from 10:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. Free plants will be given to the first 50 families entering the show on both days. Admission is free.

    There will also be a series of free lectures (a schedule of lectures will be posted on the below website) and auctions of larger plants.

  • Saturday, September 27, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Create Your Own Tropical Terrarium

    A fun, hands-on workshop, led by Art Scarpa of the Cactus and Succulent Society, will take place Saturday, September 27 at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley. Create a tropical terrarium using a heavy glass jar with lid and an assortment of miniature plants suitable for an east or north window or for growing under artificial light. Participants will learn how to care for the plants, how to choose soil mix ingredients, and how to landscape with decorative stones. All materials are provided.

    Art was awarded Mass Hort’s Gold Medal in 2013 and has spoken at and led workshops at garden clubs and flower shows all over the Northeast.
    He is a founder and past president of the Cactus & Succulent Society of Massachusetts, and is certified as a judge by the Cactus & Succulent Society of America. Art has won multiple Best in Show awards for his entries at the Boston Flower & Garden Show, the Newport Flower Show and regional cactus and succulent shows.

  • Saturday, November 20, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Cultivation and Propagation of Cold-hardy Cacti

    This month the Cactus and Succulent Society of Massachusetts is very lucky to welcome John Spain, one of the most respected growers of cold hardy Cacti in the country. This is a program not to be missed. Mr. Spain has been cultivating and propagating cacti outdoors in the cold, wet climate of central Connecticut since 1966. Over the years he has become acquainted with over 200 species and varieties of cold hardy cacti.

    In his program Mr. Spain will present everything you need to know to cultivate and propagate cold hardy cacti on your own. He will share many color slides of these beautiful plants. Please bring pen and pad, notebook and writing implement so you can take notes and keep track of any questions you want to ask at the end of the program.

    Mr. Spain’s classic book, Growing Winter Hardy Cacti in Cold/Wet Conditions, includes all of the information he will discuss in this month’s program and more. It will be for sale by the author at the meeting for $13.50 per copy.
