    Visit Historic New England’s celebrated collection of camellias in the 1804 camellia house at the Lyman Estate Greenhouses, 85 Lyman Street in Waltham. Treat yourself to a mini-vacation and soak up the atmosphere and colors of the tropics, along with some history. Enjoy the 100-year-old camellias in full bloom at one of the oldest surviving greenhouses in the United States. Historic New England members save 10% on purchases. Tickets are not required to see the camellias in bloom.

  • Sundays, March 5 & 12, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Camellias in Color: Choose Your Medium!

    Bring your watercolors or colored pencils and join botanical artist Helen Byers on Sundays, March 5 & 12 at Tower Hill Botanic Garden to draw or paint camellias during Tower Hill’s inspiring camellia show. Demos and instruction will focus on botanical art techniques in each medium to convey in detail the beautiful textures, forms, and colors of camellia petals, buds, and leaves. Our time will be divided between work in the conservatory and the classroom. The class will run from 10 – 4 each Sunday. To see examples of Helen’s work, go to helenbyers.com.

    Helen Byers is an artist, writer, editor, and educator with a background in literary and educational publishing. Her drawings and paintings have been exhibited in solo and group shows in the West and East and are held in various private collections. Her illustration credits include six children’s books and six literary book covers. Her teaching of art has included courses and workshops in botanical drawing and painting, watercolor painting, figure sketching, still-life drawing, and field sketching / journaling.

Discover the rich history of camellia cultivation from the late 1700s through the 1900s at this illustrated lecture by Lyman Estate Greenhouses Manager Lynn Ackerman on Sunday, March 5 at 1 pm at the Lyman Estate, 185 Lyman Street in Waltham. Afterwards, visit the 1804 greenhouses and enjoy our large camellia collection in bloom.     Visit Historic New England’s celebrated collection of camellias in the 1804 camellia house at the Lyman Estate Greenhouses, 185 Lyman Street in Waltham. Many of the trees are more than one hundred years old. At this time of year, they put forth a profusion of blossoms in all sizes and shapes. Other plants available during this season include orchids, citrus, and sweet olives. Garden and Landscape members receive a 15% discount on purchases and individual and household members receive a 10% discount.     New Englanders have been growing decorative plants for centuries.  Many large estates in the Boston area featured large glass greenhouses and significant collections of camellia trees.  Discover the rich history of camellia cultivation from the late 1700s through the 1900s at this illustrated lecture by Lyman Estate Greenhouse Manager Lynn Ackerman.  The event will take place Saturday, March 7 beginning at 2 pm.  Afterwards, visit the 1804 Lyman Estate Greenhouses and enjoy the large camellia collection in bloom.   $5 for the public, free to Historic New England members.  Registration required by calling 617-994-5912.  Program will take place at the Lyman Estate mansion, 185 Lyman Street in Waltham.  This lecture is part of the camellia blooming season and sale, running through March 15, Wednesdays through Sundays, 9:30 am – 4:00 pm.

  • Saturday, April 13, 10:00 am – Camellias on Parade

    Every year the camellias at the Polly Hill Arboretum on Martha’s Vineyard put on an incredible floral display in April.  Join the Arboretum staff on Saturday, April 13, beginning at 10 am, to learn more about these wonderful plants and how Polly’s persistence in obtaining hardy specimens resulted in the display we enjoy today.  Don’t miss this walk, a sight for winter weary eyes.  $5 public fee, free for PHA members.  For directions, visit www.pollyhillarboretum.org.
