The Wildlife on Tap lecture series at Cape Cod Beer (1336 Phinneys Land in Hyannis) is a special event each winter where attendees can learn about wildlife over some fine beverages. Each presenter in this series is an expert in their field. On Wednesday, January 23 from 6 – 8, hear Wayne R. Peterson, Director of the Massachusetts Important Bird Area Program at Mass Audubon, speak on Changes in New England Bird Population. Since the arrival of the Pilgrims in the 1600’s, bird populations in New England have undergone many changes due to alteration of the New England landscape, persecution of birds for feathers and food, pesticide contamination, competition with introduced species, natural biological competition among avian species and range expansion and contraction likely resulting from global climate change. This presentation will discuss and describe these various phenomena within a New England context. $10 for Mass Audubon members, $13 for nonmembers (advance purchase), $15 at the door. The Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival is an annual celebration of the region’s blue, pink, and white signature flowers. The Second Annual Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival is happening this July 8 – 17, and the festival’s schedule is nearly overflowing with fun activities for the entire family. This ten day festival’s main attractions are the daily tours of private gardens, each designed and maintained by the individual homeowners and carrying a unique charm. Enjoy the exploration of gardens with intriguing titles such as, “For the Love of Trees,” “A Peaceful Sanctuary for All Seasons,” and “Where Nature and Nurture Meet.” You are sure to enjoy such eclectic spaces, not to mention the good feeling of supporting a variety of local nonprofits.
Gardens are only one part of the festival. Enjoy workshops and lectures presented by leading international horticulturalists, discover promotions at participating nurseries and home centers, take a class to learn proper hydrangea pruning techniques, or even watch a painting demonstration by renowned Cape Cod artists both in-studio and in the gardens themselves.
Garden tours are $5 per person per garden. Each garden is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and only on the days specified. All garden tours are rain or shine and nonrefundable.

Slow Food Cape Cod could think of no better way to provide a fitting finale for the Cape Land and Sea Harvest (CLASH), a weekend long salute to fishing, farming and all things Cape Cod, than a shared meal, featuring the bounty of local foods. The setting for such a feast is at the source, outdoors in a field at Cape Cod Organic Farm. A group of chefs, farmers, fisherman, wine makers, cheese artisans, bean roasters, brewers, and musicians unite for an afternoon of education and fun. The host farmer is Tim Friary; the date is September 27th at 3:00 PM, till it gets dark. Profits will be donated to the Food Bank, in the form of real food purchased from local farmers.
The idea of Farm to Table is to gain a better understanding of the connection between the earth and the food on our plate. Enjoy a leisurely meal, while meeting local food artisans as they educate us on all aspects of what is on our plate. There will be a 5 course meal, each course paired with local wines:
– Les Hemmila, Barnstable Seafarms and Laura Scheel from Out of the Blue will set up a raw bar with both Barnstable and Wellfleet Oysters.
– Joe Dunn, of The Island Merchant will create an amazing soup.
– Stephen Skelton, from The Glass Onion is going to prepare a pasta dish.
– Liam Luttrell-Rowland from LunaSoul Foods is the man at the helm for the catch from the sea.
– Peter Hyde, Blue Moon Bistro, is on the grill for meat, secured from NEFF (North East Family Farm).
– Veronica Worthington, Pleasant Lake Farm, will create a salad, accompanied by an assortment of New England farmstead cheeses.
– Paul Olaf Lively, from Chef Paul’s Truffles, will wow you with the finale, followed by coffee from The Beanstock Roasters.
– You will be tasting wines selected from Truro and Westport Vineyards, and of course be served Cape Cod Beer. And did we mention music? Yes, we have Robertchez playing jazz classics and originals (some written just for Slow Food) to lift our spirits and set the mood.
