  • Sunday, September 12, 10:15 am – 12:15 pm – Painting Marvelous Mushrooms

    This Tower Hill Botanic Garden course on September 12 from 10:15 – 12:15 with Carol Schwartz is focused on learning and applying botanical illustration skills. It is an all levels workshop but it is encouraged that participants have some basic illustration experience. During this workshop, take a short walk along the wooded paths at Tower Hill and find just the right mushroom to paint. Snap a few pictures, then back in a classroom learn about how to use watercolors to create a beautiful mushroom illustration. Carol will provide tips, tricks and guidance for your illustration.

    Required Materials (Not Provided With Registration)

    1. Watercolor or mixed media paper pad, 9″ x 12″, such as Canson XL or Strathmore 400 Series
    2. No. 2 pencil and an eraser
    3. Watercolor set, pan or tubes, suggested brands include Winsor & Newton, Pelikan, Raphael, Royal Talens Van Gogh, Koi
    4. Three watercolor brushes; one small round brush size 0 or 1, one medium round brush size 2-5, one large round brush size 6-8

    Carol graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute, attending her senior year at Rhode Island School of Design. She earned her MFA in Illustration from the University of Hartford, Connecticut in 2014. Her education equipped her to be diverse and adaptable, with work appearing in 60 picture books and countless magazines, newspapers and advertisements.

  • Saturday, August 14, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm – Flowers in the Sun: Exploring Highlights and Shadows

    Take a walk through Tower Hill Botanic Garden on August 14 from 1-:30 – 12:30 and enjoy finding good examples of sun loving flowers to draw. Using colored pencils, learn how to better create highlights and shadows and why they are important. Materials are not included.

  • Sunday, July 25, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm – Pollinators and Plants: Watercolor Techniques

    Take a short walk through the Tower Hill Botanic gardens on July 25 looking for just the right blossom to paint. Take a few photos of blooms that have a butterfly or bee if you’re lucky. Then at the comfort of a table, use your watercolors to paint your favorite flower. There will be instruction from Carol Schwartz on the steps involved in painting a flower and how to add a butterfly or bee. Materials are not included.

  • Saturdays, March 6 – March 27, 9:30 am – 11:00 am – Botanical Watercolors: Techniques & Composition, Online

    Explore watercolor painting techniques with Carol Schwartz and Tower Hill Botanic Garden, online, in a four session course from March 6 – 27m 9:30 – 11 am. Try working wet on wet and wet on dry. Learn about mixing colors, layering, blending and texturing, as well as composition and balance of values. Improve your painting skills through class assignments focused on botanical subjects, painting demos, and individual video chats. This online course will be taught as a combination of individual video meetings, group video meetings, demo videos and email for keeping in touch. What to expect: Everyone will meet in the morning for a lesson and art review. After the morning session you will work on an assignment provided by the instructor. Each person will then schedule a 15 min afternoon consultation time with Carol to get personal instruction on the assignment. Materials are not provided for the workshop.

    Week 2: The Many Shades of White, Camellias
    Week 3: Sunny Yellow with Winter Aconite

    The beauty of leaves is all around us in the fall. Learn and practice drawing this fantastic foliage and using colored pencils to add their stunning fall colors. A few acorns or seed pods may find their way into your drawings, too! This October 10 Tower Hill Botanic Garden program will be held from 1 – 3 under our open sided outdoor canopy tent.     Sunday, September 20, 10:30 am – Magnificent Mushrooms Botanical Illustration

    Explore the multitude of mushrooms popping up in the woods at Tower Hill on September 20 at 10:30 am. This program will be held under our open sided outdoor canopy tent. Group size will not exceed current state restrictions. Sketch as you see them, then snap a photo with your phone and add color with colored pencils while sitting at a table under the activities tent. Learn about showing texture and shading.

    On February 20 from 10:30 – 4:30, spend the day in the peaceful surroundings of the Tower Hill Botanic Garden conservatories and enjoy drawing the beauty of green leaves and flowers. It’s a perfect remedy for winter doldrums. Carol Schwartz’s guidance will help you discover correct shapes and tonal values just right for your drawings and you’ll create beautiful memories of your day in the garden conservatories.     Carol Schwartz is an award-winning artist and educator whose work can be found in magazines, posters, galleries, and over 60 nonfiction books.     Tower Hill Botanic Garden has scheduled an art class on October 27 from 10:30 – 4:30 on Drawing Fall Gourds with Colored Pencil. Autumn colors are everywhere. Refine your technique of layering colored pencils to achieve beautiful, realistic botanical art. Using fall gourds as subject matter, discover what colors to mix for subtle tonal values, how to depict textures and pattern, and where to add highlights and shadows.     As summer fades into fall, savor the warm colors of golden sunflowers and zinnias of magenta and orange. Learn about the Fibonacci sequence of numbers that forms the seed pattern of a sunflower or petals of a Zinnia. After understanding the structure, creating their complicated patterns with watercolors or colored pencils (or both) will become easier. A materials list will be sent upon registration.
