  • Thursday, August 30 – Friday, August 31 – The Beth Chatto Symposium: Ecological Planting in the 21st Century

    On 30-31 August 2018 the Beth Chatto Education Trust will host a special gathering of gardeners, designers and plantspeople in honor of Beth Chatto. Join us at the University of Essex as we hear from speakers from around the world who are re-imagining ecological gardening in both design and practice, and working to further advance and expand our plant palette. A private garden party will also be held at the Beth Chatto Gardens and Nursery for our dear friends and fellow gardeners.

    All proceeds from the Symposium will go to support the work of the Beth Chatto Education Trust.   • Saturday, March 18, 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm – Wild About Perennials

    Noel Kingsbury, the author of Planting: A New Perspective shares his understanding of the naturalistic approach to planting design of landscape designers such as Piet Oudolf, Cassian Schmidt, Thomas Rainer, and Sarah Price. This Saturday, March 18 introduction to the naturalistic style explains the basic philosophy behind the practice of selecting plants for the ecology of the site and gives us lessons on how to create a landscape that looks natural and responsive to site, while also having the long season of interest that gardeners desire. Using his own extraordinary photographs, Kingsbury will illustrate the techniques used in creating these planting designs, with examples of his own work and that of the renowned Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf.

    Noel Kingsbury is an internationally known writer about plants, gardens, and the environment. Best-known for his promotion of what is broadly called an ecological or naturalistic approach to planting design, he has written some 20 books on various aspects of plants and gardens, 3 of them in collaboration with Dutch designer and plantsman Piet Oudolf. Over the years he has written for Gardens Illustrated, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, The Garden, Hortus, The New York Times, and many other publications. He also teaches and is a garden/planting designer and horticultural consultant.

  • Thursday, October 13 – Saturday, October 15 – The Gardens of Greater Philadelphia Study Tour

    Join Berkshire Botanical Garden staff members Elisabeth Cary and Dorthe Hviid for a three-day Study Tour in Greater Philadelphia, October 13 – 15. The cornerstone of this trip includes attendance at the Perennial Plant Conference held at the extraordinary Scott Arboretum, located on the campus of Swarthmore College. Attended by professionals and avid home gardeners from the northeast and mid-Atlantic states, this conference is by far the most sophisticated, cutting-edge gardening conference held on the East Coast. This three-day trip includes transportation, tours of exceptional gardens both public and private, and admission to a world-class gardening conference. There will also be a bit of free time for relaxing and resting weary feet! On the return trip, the group will make a side trip to Terrain, the fabulous garden life-style store located in Glen Mills, PA. The staff is eager to share this wonderful gardening adventure with you.

    Registration fees for attendance of the Perennial Plant Conference at Swarthmore College (2016 speakers include Cassian Schmidt, Director of Hermannshof, the seminal German naturalistic botanical garden; Seattle-based landscape designer Richard Hartlage; Canadian garden personality Larry Hodgson; Peter Zale, Curator of Plants at Longwood Garden; Jessica Walliser, author of Attracting Beneficial Bugs to the Garden: A Natural Approach to Pest Control; and Jared Barnes of NC State University Department of Horticulture). Tours of two private gardens as well as Chanticleer Garden, Longwood Garden, and The Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore College. A two-night stay (double occupancy) at the Radnor Hotel on Philadelphia’s Main Line in Wayne, PA, conveniently located near area gardens, plus all breakfasts and lunches and a wine reception.

    Evening meals are on your own; a variety of different restaurants are located within walking distance of the hotel. This excursion departs Thursday, October 13 at 7:30am from BBG and returns Saturday, October 15 at 7pm.
