  • Tuesday, December 19, 7:00 pm – A Christmas Carol

    On December 2, 1867, Charles Dickens began his first American reading tour of A Christmas Carol in Boston. Since 2002, WBUR has hosted a reading of this timeless holiday tale at the Omni Parker House, the historic site of Dickens’ first performance.
    This year, our tradition will continue on December 19 at CitySpace with a reading by your favorite WBUR hosts and reporters: Meghna Chakrabarti, Tiziana Dearing, Ben Brock Johnson, Darryl C. Murphy and Robin Young with musical performances by a cappella carol singers.

    Celebrate the 21st anniversary of this annual event and support the women of Rosie’s Place with your ticket purchase. Founded in 1974 as the first women’s shelter in the United States, Rosie’s Place provides a safe and nurturing environment to help poor and homeless women maintain their dignity, seek opportunity and find security in their lives.

  • Thursday, March 8, 6:00 pm – A Great Green Cloud: The Rise and Fall of the City Elms

    Decades before Olmsted parks, Yankee villagers planted elm trees on their streets and commons to forge a union of rus and urbe, i.e. the rustic and the urban. The trees brought about “a kind of compromise between town and country,” observed Charles Dickens, as if each had met the other halfway and shaken hands upon it. The result was that lost masterpiece of American urbanism, “Elm Street.” Thomas J. Campanella, Associate Professor of Urban Planning and Design at the University of North Carolina, will explore elm culture in the U.S., and how our love affair with this giant nearly brought it to the edge of disappearance, at the Harvard Museum of Natural History’s New Directions in EcoPlanning Annual Lecture on Thursday, March 8, beginning at 6 pm . Reception to follow, free and open to the public.  Geological Lecture Hall, 24 Oxford Street. Free parking available in the 52 Oxford Street garage.   • Sunday, December 11, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Holiday Open House at the Gibson House Museum

    The Gibson House, 137 Beacon Street, Boston, welcomes friends and neighbors through the doors of the Gibson House on December 11 from 1-4 pm. The museum will be decorated for the holidays for you to enjoy. There will also be a special exhibit of contemporary art work by three of Boston University’s most promising recent graduates. We may also have a visit from Charles Dickens to read from “A Christmas Carol”!

    No reservations are required, but if you’d like to bring a vintage or homemade ornament for the tree you’ll help us get into the Christmas spirit. If you have questions, please call 617-267-6338.
