    Learn how to make a simple, delicious cheese in your own kitchen. Berkshire Botanical Garden’s own Chris Wellens will cover equipment, supplies, and basic techniques used in making nearly all types of cheese. While making 3 types of cheese, fresh from start to finish, an emphasis will be on making a unique cheese unlike any at your local grocery store. After enjoying the fresh-made cheeses, each person will take home instructions and a set of ingredients to make a batch or two at home. This workshop is for beginners, and participants will learn by doing.

    Chris Wellens is the Director of Education at BBG and is an avid cheesemaker at home. He has taught the art of cheesemaking to adults, children, and educators throughout New England. He also teaches on a wide variety of other topics involving the environment, gardening, beekeeping, and agriculture.

  • Saturday, November 3, 10:30 am – 4:00 pm – 5th Annual Massachusetts Cheese Festival

    Celebrate the 5th Annual Massachusetts Cheese Festival.  Award-winning artisan cheesemakers will offer samples and discuss their products, and dozens of Pairing Partners will showcase culinary products to accompany all that wonderful local cheese. Local chefs and cheesemakers will offer workshops and demonstrations throughout the afternoon. The event will take place Saturday, November 3 at Arts at the Armory, 191 Highland Avenue in Somerville. Session one runs from 10:30 am – 1 pm, and Session two from 1:30 pm – 4:00 pm. Please note that wine, beer and hard cider will be served, and that visitors over 21 will be required to present ID to be issued wristbands upon admission – no alcohol will be served to visitors without a wristband.

    The 2016 Ayer Mansion Lecture Series resumes Tuesday, March 8 at 6:30 pm with Valerie Gurdal, Co-Owner of Formaggio Kitchen in Cambridge, the South End, and New York City. Learn about all things cheese while supporting the Ayer Mansion. Wine and cheese will be served at 6:30 followed by the lecture at 7.   • Tuesday, January 21, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm – Learn to Make Mozzarella with Fiore Di Nonno

    Join the Culinary Guild of New England on Tuesday, January 21 for a mozzarella-making demonstration and tasting at Fiore Di Nonno in Somerville.  Lourdes Smith is opening her award-winning shop’s doors to CGNE members and friends, to share her family’s secret to delicious, homemade mozzarella.  At this exclusive event, Smith and her fellow cheesemakers will share techniques learned from Smith’s grandfather, which have been perfected over many years.  Two batches of mozzarella will be made, which will then be enjoyed with some freshly baked bread and wine.   • Saturday, February 4, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Cheese-Making Workshop

    With the abundance of local and raw milk, homeowners can now expand their domestic arts into the realm of cheese making. This Berkshire Botanical Garden program on Saturday, February 4, from 1 – 3 will introduce the craft of basic fresh cheese making, both concepts and process. Participants will watch and help local homesteader/farmer Dominic Palumbo, from Moon in the Pond Farm, make a simple “Farm Cheese.” The program will conclude with a tasting and tips for how to turn your wonderful cheese into the perfect treat for family or guests including how and what to serve it with. This program will be held off site.

    Dominic Palumbo owns Moon in the Pond Farm, a NOFA (Northeast Organic Farmers Association) certified organic farm in Sheffield, MA. He produces organic eggs, milk, meat, wool, yarn and honey.
