  • Wednesday, May 6, 12:00 noon – 1:00 pm – Art and Design Principles for Ecological Landscapes Webinar

    Ecological design is based on the same principles as landscape design, however, practitioners can become caught up in the arrangement of elements and materials and forget that the application of art and design principles are critical to evoke meaning, intent, and order. Consider this free Ecololgical Landscape Alliance webinar on May 6 from 12 – 1 Eastern time a refresher course for experienced designers and an introduction to design for emerging practitioners. This webinar is adapted from the introduction to Ecological Design in the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden’s Native Plant and Ecological Horticulture certificate program.

    Lisa Cowan, PLA, Studioverde, is a nationally recognized landscape architect with expertise in ecology-based land design and sustainable SITES certification.  Lisa’s pioneering work in successful wetland restoration and creation was featured in Landscape Architecture Magazine.  Lisa teaches courses at the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden focused on environmental design principles and techniques for ecosystem restoration. Her work includes the planting and hardscape design for outdoor gathering spaces at the FBI’s Quantico campus (Virginia), and the landscape art entrance feature for the Margaret Chase Smith Federal Building (Maine) and the site design for the Maine Coast Heritage Trust’s Mount Desert Island office.

  • Thursday, March 15, 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm – 177th Annual Meeting of the Worcester County Horticultural Society

    The 177th Annual Meeting of the Worcester County Horticultural Society and Tower Hill Botanic Garden will be held at Tower Hill on Thursday, March 15, 4-6pm. Admission is free; pre-registration required. Members are welcome to bring guests. However, only Tower Hill members may vote at the Business Meeting.

    Business Meeting – 4pm – The 177th Annual Meeting of the Worcester County Horticultural Society will include a presentation of the Society’s business over the past year, a vote on candidates for the Board of Trustees, as well as any resolutions proposed. Amendments to the Bylaws will be presented for consideration and vote. Proposed changes may be viewed on the Annual Meeting page of our website  or be requested by calling the telephone number above. The Business Meeting will be followed by a presentation by Rodney Eason.

    Please join us for a reception in the Great Hall immediately following the presentation.

    RODNEY EASON – Rodney is the CEO of the Land & Garden Preserve which stretches from Northeast Harbor to Seal Harbor on Mount Desert Island, Maine. Prior to joining the Preserve in 2015, Rodney was director of horticulture at Coastal Maine Botanical Garden and display division leader at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania. Besides gardening and just an overall love of plants, his hobbies include bicycling, reading, and finding different ways to stay warm in the winter (he is a native Southerner). He and his wife, Carrie, feel extremely fortunate to be able to raise their two teens and two “tweens” in and around Acadia National Park.

  • Saturday, February 11, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Design Philosophy, Plantsmanship, and More

    On Saturday, February 11 from 2 – 4, Thomas Woltz shares his design philosophy, his superb sense of plantsmanship focused on selecting species and varieties that have a connection to the local flora and fauna, and his use of indigenous materials. He will focus on landscapes he has created in the region, private gardens, Hudson’s Olana and Coastal Maine Botanical Garden.

    Woltz is a principal at the landscape architecture firm Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, where he helped establish the firm’s Conservation Agriculture Studio.  This Berkshire Botanical Garden Winter Lecture will be held at the Monument Mountain Regional High School Auditorium, 600 Stockbridge Road in Great Barrington.   • Sunday, April 12, 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm – The Best New Gardens Will Come From Old Gardens

    Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston will present Rodney Eason on Sunday, April 12, from 2 – 3, for a talk entitled The Best New Gardens Will Come From Old Gardens. Along the line of thinking that the best new ideas are stolen from old ideas, Rodney, director of horticulture and plant curator at Coastal Maine Botanical Garden, will show some of the most powerful gardens he has ever visited and how these experiences have influenced his designs. Join him on a visual journey through the US, Cuba, Japan, South America, and Europe. Some of these iconic garden images will then be reimagined in new ways, in a different setting, using totally new plants. THBG members $15, non-members $25.   • Wednesday, September 3 – Thursday, September 4 – Coastal Maine Overnight Trip

    Go on a mini-vacation with Tower Hill Botanic Garden to the Coast of Maine, September 3 – 4! Spend 2 full days, complete with most meals and a comfortable night’s lodging, traveling via luxury motor coach to Boothbay Harbor, Maine. This tour will visit Cabbage Island for a traditional clam bake dinner and spend the night at Cap’n Fish’s Waterfront Inn on the harbor.     Gardening is physical activity for people of all abilities, yet each of us needs to be kind to our joints and muscles. Join master gardener, occupational therapist, and horticultural therapist Amy Wagenfeld on Saturday, June 26 beginning at 10 am in the Lerner Garden of the Five Senses, Coastal Maine Botanical Garden in Boothbay, Maine, to learn about ergonomically sound gardening techniques and practices. Try out a variety of tools that are easy to use, and learn some strategies to help you continue experiencing the delights of gardening, no matter what your age or physical challenges.  $15 members of CMBG, $20 non-members.  To register, log on to www.mainegardens.org.
