  • Thursday, August 15, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm – Cocktails in Great Gardens – Peter Bevacqua and Stephen King

On Thursday, August 15, from 5 – 7, the Berkshire Botanical Garden invites you to step through the gates of this garden and find yourself in a private magical world. This two-acre garden feels much larger because of its division into many garden rooms. One area unfolds upon the next, each with its own unique sense of style and individuality. Key to the garden’s style is the focus on form and texture. Texture derived from the selection and juxtaposition of plants whose form, leaf shape, and color create a tapestry that remains interesting long after flowers fade.

The garden is featured in The Private Gardens of the Hudson Valley, by Monacelli Press. Tickets are limited (BBG members $45, nonmembers $55) and reservations are required. Call 413.298.3926 for more information. You may also register online at www.berkshirebotanical.org.

  • Friday, August 9, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm – Cocktails in Great Gardens: Livingston House Garden

Located on four acres overlooking the magnificent Churchtown Dairy, the garden at Livingston House has been a labor of love for the owner for over a decade. After caring for the beautiful, natural garden left by the previous owner, Peter Bevacqua was engaged in 2012 to imagine and design a new vision for what the garden could become based on a love of classic English gardens such as Great Dixter and Hidcote Manor (albeit on a much smaller scale!). The garden was laid out as a pattern of different rooms for the visitor to discover, each dedicated to a different concept connected with pebbled paths lined with hydrangeas and navigated with a large wall of red tumbled brick. The generous raised bed vegetable garden borders the small orchard of plums, apples, pears and peach and leads to an Italianate terrace planted with a wonderful weeping ginkgo, roses, lilacs, clethra and buddleia. Here you can enjoy a view of the tree lined tennis court with its magnolias and arborvitaes and extensive field of wildflowers. A path along the lawns and the space around the pool takes you to a different place entirely. High grasses, cool limestone, potted citrus and crisp green lawn evoke a deliberately contemporary space. From here you can disappear through a gate cut through towering viburnums to the tree filled field where the owner’s dogs run along paths and roll in the natural vegetation.

Join Berkshire Botanical Garden on August 9 from 5 – 7 for Cocktails in Great Gardens. BBG members $40, nonmembers $55. Directions to the Hudson, New York property will be provided upon registration. Visit www.berkshirebotanical.org.

  • Friday, July 27, 5:00 pm – Cocktails in Great Gardens: The Climbery, Germantown, New York

Featured in The New York Times, Perennial Magazine, and Better Homes and Gardens, The Climbery is both a private garden and a not-for-profit foundation. Upon purchasing the property 30 years ago, Barbara Packer admired the one clematis in residence which became the inspiration for what is now the largest private clematis collection in the world. The seven-acre property overlooking the Roeliff Jansen Kill is a whimsical wonderland of garden sculptures, statuary and furnishings, intriguing planters and containers, nine pond gardens, and garden rooms accentuated by fanciful surprises.

Of special note are the gazebo and hosta gardens and the round, corner, hill, allée and greenhouse gardens, all developed one at a time to shape the landscape and provide a backdrop for garden art including a life-size horse and bull created from repurposed cans, and an eye-catching sculpture defined by circles welded to form an enormous ball. A July 27 visit to this garden is sure to be a summer highlight as we are joined by friends old and new for Berkshire Botanic Garden’s “Cocktails in Great Gardens.” $40. • Friday, June 29, 5:00 pm – Cocktails in Great Gardens – Kinderhook, New York

Berkshire Botanical Garden again hosts its Cocktails in Great Gardens series, and on Friday, June 29 at 5 pm, they will be in a private garden in Kinderhook, New York. An allée of mature maple trees welcomes you to the home and gardens at this lovely Kinderhook, New York property. The main garden was conceived as a contained counterpoint to the surrounding farmland with a series of spaces, each with its own character. A kitchen garden of boxwood parterres and espaliered pears is planted with summer vegetables and herbs; the main lawn is enclosed by a boxwood and hornbeam hedge with a visual break revealing a view to the pond, fields, and mountains beyond.

On the south side of the lawn, one path leads to the tranquil Secret Garden, enveloped by old twisted yews, hemlocks and hollies, that includes a perennial garden of both sun and shade plants. Additional paths interrupt the hornbeam hedge leading to a crab apple garden, the small pear room and the pool area, which includes restored farm buildings, one of which is now the pool house. The pool is flanked by a wavy yew hedge and provides an alternate view into the Secret Garden through a hedge of oakleaf hydrangea. Outside the contained gardens are a greenhouse, vegetable and cutting garden to explore and enjoy in the waning summer light. Image of oakleaf hydrangea hedge from www.whiteflowerfarm.com.

  • Friday, June 17, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm – Cocktails in Great Gardens – The Home of Alice Platt

Cocktails in Great Gardens have become some of the Berkshire Botanical Garden’s most popular summer events by offering guests a tour of some of the most amazing private gardens that the Berkshire’s have to offer and this year is no exception. This year’s Cocktail series kicks off Friday June 17 from 5 – 7 with the extraordinary garden and home of Alice Platt in Craryville, New York.

This garden, which won a Golden Trowel Award from Garden Design magazine in 2005, is nestled in the woods at the end of a country lane. It takes advantage of a widely varied landscape to create a series of informal gardens that attempt to exploit the beauty of the natural setting. The site contains woodland paths, which wander over bridges across a creek and past the remains of old stone walls and natural rock formations. Included in the gardens are sunny herbaceous borders, a rock garden, shade garden, and a park-like hillside garden. Out of sight but just over a rise is a path that leads to a swimming pond.
