  • Wreath of the Day – New Year’s Eve Sparkle

    Traditionally, Wreath of the Day posts for New Year’s Eve feature especially sparkly wreaths, in keeping with the party sensibility of the night, and this year is no exception. We also take the opportunity to thank Maureen O’Hara and Coldwell Banker for all their support of the Garden Club of the Back Bay over the year. Coldwell Banker, along with Lois Kunian and Gibson/Sotheby’s International Realty, are corporate sponsors of our annual spring Twilight Garden Party, and we thank them once again for their kindness and generosity.

  • Saturday, December 9, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Sippican Holiday House Tour

    The annual Holiday House Tour is the principal fund-raising activity of the Sippican Woman’s Club. All proceeds from the House Tour go towards scholarships to Marion students pursuing bachelor’s degrees. For more than 30 years, Marion’s homeowners have generously opened their homes to the Tour. Until Tour Day (this year on Saturday, Dec. 9), the list of houses on the Tour is kept secret from all but a few. The Tour begins at Handy’s Tavern, proceeds to several local homes selected for special historical or architectural interest, and ends with the hospitality of the Sippican Woman’s Club at the Tea held at the Parish Hall of St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church (2 to 4 pm). Houses are open from 10 am until 4 pm.

    Ticket prices: advance $20 each, day of Tour $25 each

    Advance tickets may be purchased in Marion at the General Store, the Bookstall and Serendipity by the Sea and in Mattapoisett at Isabelle’s in the Ropewalk or by mail (send a check for the total amount to Tickets, Sippican Woman’s Club, PO Box 121, Marion, MA 02738). On Tour Day retrieve your “Will Call” Tour brochures or purchase your same day tickets at the Coldwell Banker Realty office next to Handy’s Tavern.

  • Saturday, December 2, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm – Concord Museum Holiday House Tour

    On Saturday, December 2, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., several of Concord’s most beautiful private homes will be professionally decorated in the holiday spirit by local and Boston-based interior designers. Guests will be welcomed inside the front doors of these gracious private residences to visit the charming ground floor rooms. From Colonial to Victorian to Shingle Style and more, each house will be decorated in a different holiday theme. The Concord Museum welcomes you to spend the day in Concord, a small town with a big history, and enjoy the elegant streets, charming cafés and shops, as well as the many historic homes.

    The Guild of Volunteers is organizing this event as a benefit for the education initiatives of the Museum.   • Saturday, June 15, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – 20th Annual South End Garden Tour

    This year’s rain-or-shine, self-guided tour will kick off at the South End Branch of the Boston Public Library, at the corner of Rutland Square and Tremont Street, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 15. The tour will feature many beautiful, diverse gardens in the South End – from pocket-sized patio spaces to rooftop terraces to neighborhood parks and Land Trust community gardens. All of the gardens show the creativity of the owners and gardeners, and the joy they receive from developing and caring for a city garden.

    The tour, a major neighborhood event, attracts garden lovers from all over the city as well as the suburbs, who are often surprised and amazed to find such creative use of outdoor urban space.  One of the biggest attractions of the South End Garden Tour is its yearly variety of gardens. Because the South End encompasses such a large area, the tour visits a different area of the neighborhood every year. The tour revisits the same portion only every four to five years. Within that cycle, the gardens have changed dramatically. It’s never the same tour twice! Back for 2013 – Artists In the Garden. South End artists will be creating paintings in the Tour gardens and other designated locations within the Tour area. The painting will be available for purchase at the reception immediately following the Tour. A reception/art sale will be held at City Year headquarters, 287 Columbus Avenue, Boston MA 02116 (corner of Clarendon Street).

    Proceeds of the Tour benefit the South End/Lower Roxbury Open Space Land Trust, a non-profit organization supporting local community gardens and open spaces, through Boston Natural Areas Network. The SELROSLT was established to protect community gardens and pocket parks in this historic Boston neighborhood while working with the South End Landmarks Commission.   • Pie in The Sky 2012

    Garden Club of the Back Bay member Maureen O’Hara reminded us of this terrific Thanksgiving benefit, and her boss Ken Tutunjian of Coldwell Banker Boston is selling pies! Buy pies directly through Ken by searching his name in the Pie in the Sky directory at www.pieinthesky.org.  More than a fundraiser, Pie in the Sky fosters community spirit and engages the public in the mission of Community Servings — Massachusetts’ free home-delivered meals and nutrition program for the critically ill.

    Each November since 1993, Boston’s best restaurants, bakeries, caterers and hotels donate thousands of pies that over 500 volunteers then sell to family, friends and colleagues. Each pie costs $25, providing a week’s worth of hearty home-delivered meals to a Community Servings’ client and a tasty Thanksgiving treat to the buyer.

    Corporate donors provide financial support and donations of in-kind services. Thanks to the dedication and generosity of our pie sellers and volunteers, $.90 of every $1.00 raised in 2010 went directly to feeding Community Servings’ clients.

    Rest assured, when you support Community Servings through Pie in the Sky, your contribution goes directly to our neighbors in greatest need — homebound individuals and families struggling with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and who are too sick to shop or cook for themselves.

    Here is how you — the communty — make Pie in the Sky happen.   Over 150 Bakers throughout Greater Boston bake and donate thousands of apple, pecan, pumpkin and sweet potato pies.  Over 600 Pie Sellers take orders from their family, friends and coworkers in the weeks before Thanksgiving. You can buy pies and make financial contributions to Community Servings by visiting pieinthesky.org.  75 volunteers gather at the Greater Boston Food Bank for our annual “Box Party” to label 15,000 pie boxes in just 3 hours. Groups of volunteers then head out to deliver bundles of pie boxes and pie tins to each of our 150 bakers. Volunteers pick up the donated pies from pie bakers across Greater Boston and deliver them to “Pie Central.” It takes a lot of space and manpower to organize 15,000 pies!  Pies are then shipped to over 60 public distribution points in Boston and the surrounding suburbs. Happy pie buyers retrieve their pies on the day before Thanksgiving at their preselected pick-up location.  Pie Buyers enjoy their Thanksgiving celebrations. Thanks to their generosity, Community Servings’ clients sit down to lovingly prepared home-style meals — on Thanksgiving and every day.

  • Saturday, July 16, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Private Gardens of the Kennebunks

    The Child Abuse Prevention Council of York County and 10 private homeowners are pleased to announce the 17th Annual “Private Gardens of the Kennebunks” Garden Tour Saturday, July 16th, 2011.  This self-guided tour features 10 unique private home gardens in Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Cape Porpoise area. View the gardens at your own pace, in any order you choose. This tour allows participants to gather landscaping ideas and view perennial and annual plants that may enhance their own gardens.
    The gardens are open from 10am to 4pm on July 16th and will be held rain or shine. Participants are provided with a brochure describing all the gardens and a map that provides the driving directions to each garden. You determine how long you linger at the garden and in what order you visit the gardens. Refreshments will be provided by Lucas on 9 at 62 Mills Road, (Rte 9) in Cape Porpoise.

     

    As a special feature, Honorary Chair, Paul Parent, host of the popular Sunday morning syndicated radio show “The Paul Parent Garden Club” will spend the day at Lucas On 9, sharing his knowledge and gardening tips, as well as answering questions on gardening in New England.  All proceeds from the tour will benefit the prevention programs of the Child Abuse Prevention Council of York County. The Child Abuse Prevention Council’s programs consistently endeavor to educate and support children and their families, professionals that work with children, and the surrounding community. Central to their mission is the promotion of healthy, nurturing relationships between children and adults. This is achieved through education, collaboration and advocacy in established programs and events which foster the well-being of children and families throughout York County.

  • Sunday, May 2, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Sharon Old House Tour

    The Sharon Historical Society’s Old House Tour will take place Sunday, May 2, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, rain or shine.  This year’s tour will feature five architecturally significant homes, including the remarkable Steampunk House (below) on Pleasant Street.  The self-guided tour of these charming private homes affords the opportunity to explore their decorations as well as their wonderful architecture.  Guides will be available to discuss the significant features of each.  The newly renovated Sharon Community Center and the long awaited Wilbur School conversion will also be open as part of the tour.  Take this moment to see these remarkable transformations.  This is an important fundraiser to benefit The Historical Society, so please purchase tickets early.  All funds that are raised will benefit the Society and its programs.  The Society receives no funding from the town or from the Commonwealth.

    Tickets are $16 per person for members and $20 for non-members.
