    Michael Dosmann, Curator of Living Collections, Arnold Arboretum, will speak on Saturday, Oct 31 , 1:00–2:30pm, at the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain.
    As the weather changes and leaves drop, focus your attention on bark, an often-overlooked ornamental feature of woody plants. The Curator of Living Collections is mad for bark!   • Sunday, October 18, 1 – 3 pm – Autumn Beauties: Native Plants in the Collections

    Tower Hill Botanic Garden’s grounds contain many beautiful native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants that are at their most vivacious in the fall. Blueberries and chokeberries around the Wildlife Pond will be in vivid fall dress, and winterberries will be ripening for winter migrating birds. Fine native grasses will be at their ripest on Sunday, October 18, beginning at 1 pm, in the Systematic Garden. Witch hazels will be glowing yellow around the Wildlife Garden. Garden Designer Dori Smith, M. Ed, of Gardens for Life in Acton, Massachusetts,  will seek out the best specimens in the garden’s collections to show you. She will discuss the special characteristics of native plants that make them good choices for your gardens, and how to create a palette of plants that will please you and the wildlife, year round.   • Wednesday, September 16, 6-8 pm – Artists in the Arboretum Opening Night

    The Arnold Arboretum and Jamaica Plain Open Studios host a juried group exhibition devoted to art inspired by the plants, landscape, and collections of the Arnold Arboretum, in conjunction with the Open Studios weekend. Come to Opening Night on Wednesday, September 16, from 6 – 8 pm.  The Open Studios weekend runs from September 26 – September 27, 11 – 6, and the exhibition in the Hunnewell Building Lecture Hall at the Arnold Arboretum will be on display through October 9, 2009.  For more information, log on to www.arboretum.harvard.edu.

  • Saturday, August 29, 1:30 – 3:30 pm – Oh Nuts!

    Spend an afternoon at the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain with Michael Dosmann, curator of living collections, as he discusses the natural history of many of the Arboretum’s notorious nut species.  Mr. Dosmann was a popular speaker at a Garden Club of the Back Bay meeting a few seasons ago, and you will enjoy this walking tour with him.  Dress comfortably with good walking shoes.

    The Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Gardens needs your help!

  • Tuesday, June 30, 10 – 11:30 a.m. – If Trees Could Talk

    Dawn redwood, dove tree, and franklinia are just a handful of the trees growing at the Arboretum with engaging stories of how they secured a place in gardens and in the history of plant exploration. If our trees could talk, they might share accounts of faraway forests, botanical adventures, and intrepid plant explorers. Join Collections and Grounds Manager Tom Clark on a walking tour of the Arboretum where he will reveal some of the fascinating stories behind these and other beloved plants.$5/free to PHA members. 508-693-9426
