  • Friday, February 7, 7:00 pm Eastern – Two Tales of Floristic Change in Southern New England: Orchids and Northern Species, Live and Online

    Floras change over time in response to numerous variables, including land use changes, species introductions, climate change, and other factors. This New England Botanical Society talk at 7 pm on February 7 will examine and attempt to explain changes in frequencies of two groups of plants in southern New England: orchids and northern species (i.e., those near the southern end of their range). It will include a discussion of different data sources and their limitations and the challenges of dealing with potentially confounding factors. Speaker Dr. Robert Bertin is Professor Emeritus of Biology at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. The talk will be live and on Zoom.

    Why should we care about the environment? In this online introductory webinar, you will learn four philosophical models of human relationship with nature in order to gain deeper understanding of your own and others’ environmental ethics.

    We will consider our roles and the ways obligation to our surroundings forms the foundation of efforts such as recycling, preservation of endangered species, and habitat restoration.

    Instructor Dr. Kendy Hess is the Brake Smith Associate Professor in Social Philosophy and Ethics at College of the Holy Cross focusing on environmental law and ethics. With a background in philosophy and previous practice in environmental law, Dr. Hess is one of the leading international scholars on corporate moral responsibility, on which she has published widely.

    To complete this program, participants must commit to at least 20 hours of volunteer time in the urban forest of Worcester or at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, as well as organize one pruning outing project to demonstrate leadership.

    Learn the skills essential to urban and community forestry and become tree stewards in your community. Topics covered will include basic pruning techniques and safety, tree identification and biology, proper tree planting and establishment care, tree pests and diseases, tree health assessment and urban soil challenges.

    Dr. Robert Bertin, Professor and Department Chair, Biology Department, College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, will address the May 7 meeting of the New England Botanical Club at Garden in the Woods in Framingham, Massachusetts, beginning at 6:30 pm.
