  • Wednesday, October 17, 7:30 pm – Food Heals Our Communities

Community Servings is a Boston-based not-for-profit that engages the community in preparing and delivering made-from-scratch medically tailored meals to individuals coping with chronic illnesses throughout Massachusetts. In his talk at Wright-Locke Farm, CEO David Waters, will delve into the successful partnerships they’ve created with local farms and food purveyors through their “Abundance Initiative” to increase access to fresh produce in their kitchens, eliminate waste in the food system, and, ultimately, use food to heal.

David Waters has been involved with Community Servings since its inception in 1989, moving from volunteer to board member, Board Chair, Director of Development, and eventually CEO, in 1999. Under David’s leadership, Community Servings has evolved from a small neighborhood meals program delivering dinner to 30 people, to a critical regional program providing 15 medically-tailored meals plans to 2,000 people with acute life-threatening illnesses, their dependents, and caregivers in 20 Massachusetts communities. He is the former Board Chair of the Association of Nutrition Service Agencies, and is a founding member of the national Food Is Medicine Coalition. In recognition of his leadership and impact at Community Servings and within the Greater Boston community, David was named a Barr Foundation Fellow in 2017. A resident of Cambridge, he holds graduate degrees from Middlebury College and Boston University.

The session will be held at 7:30 at Wright-Locke Farm in Winchester on Wednesday, October 17 in our beautiful 1827 Barn, and will be followed up with a Q&A session. We will also offer a casual supper before each presentation. For more details, check out our website, http://wlfarm.org, or to RSVP, email Kim Kneeland at kkneeland@wlfarm.org.

  • Pie in The Sky 2012

Garden Club of the Back Bay member Maureen O’Hara reminded us of this terrific Thanksgiving benefit, and her boss Ken Tutunjian of Coldwell Banker Boston is selling pies! Buy pies directly through Ken by searching his name in the Pie in the Sky directory at www.pieinthesky.org.  More than a fundraiser, Pie in the Sky fosters community spirit and engages the public in the mission of Community Servings — Massachusetts’ free home-delivered meals and nutrition program for the critically ill.

Each November since 1993, Boston’s best restaurants, bakeries, caterers and hotels donate thousands of pies that over 500 volunteers then sell to family, friends and colleagues. Each pie costs $25, providing a week’s worth of hearty home-delivered meals to a Community Servings’ client and a tasty Thanksgiving treat to the buyer.

Corporate donors provide financial support and donations of in-kind services. Thanks to the dedication and generosity of our pie sellers and volunteers, $.90 of every $1.00 raised in 2010 went directly to feeding Community Servings’ clients.

Rest assured, when you support Community Servings through Pie in the Sky, your contribution goes directly to our neighbors in greatest need — homebound individuals and families struggling with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and who are too sick to shop or cook for themselves.

Here is how you — the communty — make Pie in the Sky happen.   Over 150 Bakers throughout Greater Boston bake and donate thousands of apple, pecan, pumpkin and sweet potato pies.  Over 600 Pie Sellers take orders from their family, friends and coworkers in the weeks before Thanksgiving. You can buy pies and make financial contributions to Community Servings by visiting pieinthesky.org.  75 volunteers gather at the Greater Boston Food Bank for our annual “Box Party” to label 15,000 pie boxes in just 3 hours. Groups of volunteers then head out to deliver bundles of pie boxes and pie tins to each of our 150 bakers. Volunteers pick up the donated pies from pie bakers across Greater Boston and deliver them to “Pie Central.” It takes a lot of space and manpower to organize 15,000 pies!  Pies are then shipped to over 60 public distribution points in Boston and the surrounding suburbs. Happy pie buyers retrieve their pies on the day before Thanksgiving at their preselected pick-up location.  Pie Buyers enjoy their Thanksgiving celebrations. Thanks to their generosity, Community Servings’ clients sit down to lovingly prepared home-style meals — on Thanksgiving and every day.

  • July, 2012 – Charity in Bloom

Winston Flowers announces its July charity, a long time Garden Club of the Back Bay favorite Community Servings. Founded in 1989, Community Servings is a Boston based food and nutrition program dedicated to providing free home-delivered meals to people homebound due to a life-threatening illness such as HIV/AIDS, cancer, kidney disease and M.S. each day. Community Servings gives their 1300 clients, their dependent families, and caregivers appealing, nutritious meals, and sends the message to those in greatest need that someone cares.

Winston Flowers will donate 20% of the retail price of each Charity In Bloom design to Community Servings. Funds raised will feed critically ill individuals who are too sick to shop and cook for themselves and their families. Every $25 raised can feed one of Community Servings’ clients for an entire week. • Community Servings Herb Garden Call for Volunteers

With the help of hundreds of volunteers, business and corporate sponsors, and its dedicated staff and board members, Community Servings prepare and deliver 3,340 lunches and dinners each week to the homes of almost 700 individuals and families who are homebound with an acute life-threatening illness.  In June 2009, Community Servings planted seedlings for its first herb garden in 100 feet of planters along the side of its building at 18 Marbury Terrace in Jamaica Plain. Community Servings needs a volunteer to come a couple of times each week to help weed, water and pick the herbs from the garden. Hours are flexible. This is a great opportunity for those in a Master Gardening program or anyone interested in learning more about gardening!

The herb garden is a project developed in partnership with The Growing Connection, a grassroots project developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The herbs and arugula grown are added to free home-delivered meals for critically-ill neighbors and their families.  If you are interested please contact the Ashley Boyd, Volunteer Recruitment Coordinator at 617-522-7777 Ext. 228 or at aboyd@servings.org.
