  • Wednesdays, January 7, April 8, July 8, & October 14, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm Eastern – Connecticut River Watershed Seminar Series: History, Challenges, Promise, Revival, Online

    Estuary magazine and its parent The Watershed Fund, and the Old Lyme Conservation Commission are excited to announce a seminar series beginning in 2026 for anyone interested in the environment, focusing on the past, present, and future of the Connecticut River watershed and the issues it faces. Quarterly seminars via Zoom given by experts in their fields will provide in-depth, accessible, and timely explorations of the river’s history, terrestrial habitats, aquatic habitats, invasive plants, geology, and restoration efforts. The series is planned to span eight sessions over two years.

    The first free talk will take place January 7 at 6 pm Eastern with Andy Fisk, Northeast Regional Director of American Rivers. Future speakers include Jillian Liner, Director of Conservation for Audubon Vermont on Avian Habitats, Dan Wilder, Director of Applied Ecology, Norcross Wildlife Foundation on Building Resilient Habitats, and Stephen Gephard, recently retired from the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection after serving 42 years as a fisheries biologist, on Aquatic Habitats.

    Sessions will be moderated by Matt McKenzie, Professor of History & Maritime Studies at UCONN Avery Point, and co-chair, Old Lyme Conservation Commission.

  • Saturday, April 13, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm, and Sunday, April 14, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Cactus & Succulent Show and Sale

    The Connecticut Cactus and Succulent Society will celebrate its 36th Annual Cactus and Succulent Show and Sale on Saturday, April 13th and Sunday April 14th. at the Bristol Senior Community Center, 240 Stafford Avenue in Bristol. Connecticut.

    This is the largest show of its kind in the Eastern U.S., with over two thousand visitors each year.

    The judged show has more than 100 categories with over 500 entries. In addition, there will be at least 15 vendors with a huge selection of C&S plants, pots, soils, and books.

    The sales area will be open to the public on Saturday from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. and on Sunday from 10:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. Free plants will be given to the first 50 families entering the show on both days. Admission is free.

    There will also be a series of free lectures (a schedule of lectures will be posted on the below website) and auctions of larger plants.

  • Thursday, August 31, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Digging Dahlias

    On Thursday, August 31, from 10 – 12, come with Berkshire Botanical Garden to Something to Crow About, an extraordinary dahlia farm located in Cornwall in the northwest corner of Connecticut, where dahlia grower Amanda Chase will lead our group through her collection of 2500 plants (over 200 cultivars) to see these beauties in full flower. Not only is the end of August peak season for dahlia bloom, it is also the perfect time to learn about cultivating dahlias. Amanda Chase will point out some of the best varieties to grow and provide tips for maintaining these plants from year to year, such as when to plant, when to lift, and how to store during the winter months. Following the tour participants will be able to order tubers, and buy plants or cut flowers – a great way to start a collection, or add to an existing one, of these amazing plants from our neighboring country south of the border.

  • Saturday, July 10, 10:00 am – Sedge Workshop at Lockwood Farm Cottage

    The Connecticut Botanical Society will sponsor a Sedge Workshop on Saturday, July 10, beginning at 10 am at Lockwood Farm Cottage in Hamden, Connecticut.  Led by Sigrun Gadwa, CBS Plant Ecologist, the workshop will work with fresh specimens of the Carex species from the 2010 field season, examining both inflorescences and vegetative characteristics, such as the color of leaf bases.  You’ll learn several distinctive sedge “Sections.”  If you collect a sedge to bring to the workshop, collect only a small portion of a clump, and a few perigynia (seeds); refrigerate in a ziplock bag until the workshop.  Bring a loupe. Directions: Interstate 91: Take exit 10. Follow the Route 40 connector for 3.1 miles. Take a right onto Whitney Ave (Route 10) and go north for 0.6 miles. Take a left onto Evergreen Avenue, go 0.1 mile and take a right onto Kenwood Avenue.
