  • Thursdays, February 26 – March 19, 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm – Container Garden Design

    Acquire knowledge of the skills required for beautiful and successful container gardens with Jenna O’Brien, owner of Viridissima Horticulture and Design. Get to know the plants that thrive in containers and how to care for them. This three session class at Berkshire Botanical Garden in West Stockbridge will cover practical aspects of gardening with style in containers throughout the New England garden season. Considerations will include container selection, siting, planting, growing, controlling pests, and maintaining moveable gardens.   • Wednesday, March 29, 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm Eastern – Native Plants for Container Gardens, Online

    Many native plants make great choices for container gardens. From shade to sun, perennials to shrubs, spring to fall, there are options that will bring a host of beneficial insects and birds to your yard, patio, deck, or balcony. Berkshire Botanical Garden sponsors this online lecture, led by Duncan Himmelman, on Wednesday, March 29 from 5:30 – 7 Eastern time. $12 for BBG members, $15 for nonmembers.     Duncan Himmelman earned his doctorate at Cornell University and taught horticultural science at the college level for 24 years. He recently retired as the Education Manager at Mt. Cuba Center, a public garden in Delaware devoted to native plant advocacy. He continues to enjoy teaching, designing landscapes and promoting ecologically focused gardening practices. 

  • Tuesday, May 13, 9:00 am – Spring and Summer Containers

    Deb Trickett is a Massachusetts Certified Horticulturist and a Massachusetts Certified Landscape professional. We have come to know and love her as the amazingly talented designer of container gardens. Deb’s presentations are informative, funny, interactive and filled with great ideas for making our containers at home look so much more beautiful. The Duxbury Garden Club will sponsor a program on Tuesday, May 13 beginning at 9 am at the Duxbury Bay Maritime School. 457 Washington Street in Duxbury, and the fee to attend is $5.     Betsy Williams, a renowned gardener and herb grower, will demonstrate how to use container gardening with herbs and flowers to enhance your daily life. In this Pepperell Garden Club event on Wednesday, April 9, beginning at 7 pm at the Pepperell Senior Center, 37 Nashua Road in Pepperell, she will show us how herbs and flowers can be used in cooking, potpourri, and floral arrangements to add beauty, flavor, meaning and fragrance to seasonal celebrations. $5 fee.     Aesthetically, your cramped city apartment may be about the furthest thing from Mr. McGregor’s garden, but if you’ve got a patio, porch or windowsill, you’ve got enough space to grow all the herbs, veggies and flowers they do in the countryside (with far less threat of Peter Rabbit ransacking your crops).   • Thursday, November 15, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Creating a Container of Succulents

    Learn all the tricks of the trade for creating a beautiful container full of these gorgeous xerophytes! The Thursday, November 15 demonstration by Carrie Waterman of Noanett Garden Club will cover appropriate species, containers, growing medium, topdressing and aftercare.

    Presentations will begin at 7pm and go until all questions are answered. The classes are priced at $12 for Mass Hort members and $15 for non-members unless otherwise indicated. There is no need to pre-register and you may pay at the class. Location: The Parkman Room, Education Building, Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street, Wellesley.

  • Wednesday, November 14, 9:30 am – Jaw-Dropping, Traffic-Stopping, Get-Your-Neighbors-Talking Container Gardens for All Seasons

    Deborah Trickett, an award-winning container garden designer, certified horticulturist, and frequent lecturer at flower shows and other venues, will show you how to use uncommon plants and materials for exceptionally beautiful results. Lucky winners will take home unusual accents and plants to add pizzazz to their holiday or springtime arrangements.     Deborah Trickett, MCH, and owner of The Captured Garden, will speak at Weston Nurseries of Chelmsford, 160 Pine Hill Road in Chelmsford, on Saturday, April 28, beginning at 2 pm. Deborah is an award-winning designer whose work has been featured in The Boston Globe, in Garden Gate Magazine, and on the TV show New England Dream Home.  She is a frequent lecturer at the Boston Flower & Garden Show as well as at the Philadelphia International Flower Show.     The Andover Garden Club will hold a meeting, open to the public, on Tuesday, April 3, beginning at 10 am at South Church, 41 Central Street in Andover.  A $5 suggested donation is requested. Garden designer, writer, and lecturer Donna Lane, speaking on Creating Lush Containers, will demonstrate how to create lush container gardens that will be the envy of the neighborhood. She will discuss color, texture, form, mass, and scale; how to select plants; the best soil for planters; which plants are best suited to containers; professional secrets; and use of accessories.

  • Saturday, February 18, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – European Container Garden for Indoors

    Plant a lovely winter garden for your table or window to enjoy indoors while winter still holds sway outside. European container gardens combine potted plants with fresh cut flowers in a decorative container. With proper care, the plants will last for many months and the fresh flowers can be replaced when desired. This Tower Hill Botanic Garden workshop, led by Betsy Williams on Saturday, February 18 from 10 – noon, costs $65 (THBG members) or $70 (nonmembers.)
