  • Monday, June 21, 6:00 pm – Summer Solstice Stroll in Copley Square

    On Monday, June 21, beginning at 6 pm, join The Friends of Copley Square for the Summer Solstice Stroll in Copley Square, a guided tour of the landmarks of Copley Square.  Begin at Normandy Real Estate Partners’ Hancock Tower, then on to Trinity Church, the Boston Public Library, and Old South Church, concluding at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel.  Learn the history of the Square, listen to music, taste refreshments along the way, enjoy the splendid landmark buildings and institutions, then complete the evening with a light supper.  The Summer Solstice Stroll benefits The Friends of Copley Square, Inc., a not for profit friends group which provides funding to assist the City with the maintenance and beautification of the Square.  Festive business attire.  $100 per person.  You may purchase tickets online at http://friendsofcopleysquare.org prior to the June 17 deadline, or send a check made out to The Friends of Copley Square to 234 Clarendon Street, Boston, MA 02116.  You may contact the Stroll Committee by email at  SolsticeStroll@gmail.com.

    Dan Pearson is one of the most important and influential landscape designers working today. At the heart of all his gardens lies an unshakable theme – his reverence for the power and delicacy of nature. In this lecture on Tuesday, January 19, beginning at 7 pm at Trinity Church on Copley Square,  Dan will demonstrate his design process, in which he extrapolates on the spirit of place as it emerges through geography, history, architecture, and native flora. Dan will explain how he believes landscapes—both wild and designed—speak to us, how human interventions in the landscape can animate and inform, and how they can serve to memorialize and to heal.
    Fee $20 Arnold Arboretum member, $25 nonmember
    Dan Pearson is a landscape designer with an international reputation for design and planting excellence. His key strengths are horticultural expertise, an informed and intuitive approach to the organization of space, and the practice of ecological and sustainable design principles. Dan trained at Wisley, a Royal Horticultural Society garden, and at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He is a weekly gardening columnist for The Observer, before which he was a columnist for The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Times. He is co-author of The Essential Garden Book (with Sir Terence Conran) and author of The Garden: A Year at Home Farm.   • Wednesday, January 13, 10:00 am – Community Supported Agriculture

    Join members of The Garden Club of the Back Bay on Wednesday, January 13 beginning at 10:00 am at The College Club, 44 Commonwealth Avenue, for a January meeting featuring Chris Kurth of Siena Farms in Sudbury, Massachusetts.  Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer.  Here are the basics: a farmer offers a certain number of “shares” to the public.  Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included.  Interested consumers purchase a share (a/k/a a “membership” or a “subscription”) and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.  This arrangements creates several rewards for both the farmer and the consumer, and Chris will detail how this grass roots movement has had a profound impact on how we eat.  Many of our members know Chris from The Farmer’s Market on Copley Square, where his beautiful produce is always in high demand.  He supplies a number of Boston’s best restaurants as well.  If you are a GCBB member, you will receive, or may already have received, a written notice of the meeting.  If not, please rsvp to info@bostonflora.com.  There is no charge for the meeting, but there will be an optional lunch at the Club following the talk, which will cost $20, and reservations are essential.

    From the Boston Society of Architects Lecture Series: December 16, 6:00 pm at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square, Rabb Lecture Hall, hear Patti Moreno speak on Urban Sustainable Living.  Through websites, videos, workshops and unlimited energy, this Roxbury mother, businesswoman and self-proclaimed “Garden Girl” shares her passion for urban garden ing and her message of urban sustainable living. Patti has created a true urban farm in the middle of Roxbury with extensive gardens and several kinds of livestock.   • Holiday Lighting Around Town – Mayor Menino Plugs In

    The Mayor will be busy indeed as he dashes around town spreading holiday cheer beginning Monday, November 23 at Christopher Columbus Park in the North End.  At 5:30 pm, he will flick the switch on 50,000 bulbs in a unique, blue and white design, which have been strung along 260 feet of trellis in the heart of the park.  The free celebration will include entertainment from the North End Music and Performing Arts Center and the Ray Cavicchio Band, as well as food from Mike’s Pastry, Starbucks, the Marriott Long Wharf Hotel, and Legal Sea Foods.  The entire evening is sponsored by the Friends of Christopher Columbus Park and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department.

    On Wednesday, December 2, you may spot the Mayor closer to home when he joins the Friends of Copley Square, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, the Salvation Army Brass Band, and the Trinity Church Children’s Choir at the official Copley Square Tree Lighting, beginning at 5:00 pm.  You’ll find Santa Claus and, once again, Legal Sea Foods.  The forty foot blue spruce has been sponsored by Normandy Real Estate Partners.

    The next night, Thursday, December 3, from 6 – 8 pm, the City of Boston’s 68th Annual Tree Lighting takes place on the Boston Common.  Sponsors WCVB-TV Channel 5 and Magic 106.7 will provide live coverage of, you guessed it, Mayor Menino, and refreshments will be provided by H.P. Hood LLC, Cabot Creamery, Nantucket Nectars and Snapple, Dunkin’ Donuts, Jazzy Apples, and New York Life (they cook?).  Entertainment will include R&B singer Brian McKnight, “American Idol” Season 6 third place finalist Melinda Doolittle, the Boston Arts Academy Dance Troupe, the Masquerade cabaret troupe, and Magic 106.7’s Nancy Quill and Mike Addams.  Nova Scotia again provides the tree.     Once the Mayor has lit the Common, he’ll proceed to Arlington Street and the Commonwealth Avenue Mall to illuminate the two hundred trees along the Mall with little white lights, all paid for through community support and private donations raised by the Committee to Light Commonwealth Avenue Mall.  The Taj Boston will provide refreshments.

  • Friday, May 22, 11 – 6 – Copley Square Farmers’ Market

    The Boston Farmers Market Season kicked off this week with the opening of the Copley Square Farmers’ Market. This market will be in the park from 11 am to 6 pm on Tuesdays and Fridays from now until November 24th.
