  • Saturday, March 22, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Garden Basket Workshop for Adults

    Join Strawbery Banke’s friendly and knowledgeable Museum Instructors to learn the steps of basket-making from scratch. This March 22 session is a beginner class so all skill levels are welcome. Participants will learn about the tools and materials used in basket making, work with our instructors and each other to acquire the basic skills to make a basket, and conclude by taking your finished basket home. This workshop is limited to ten participants. Strawbery Banke is located at 14 Hancock Street in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

  • Sunday, February 4, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm – CraneExplorer: Valentine’s Coastal Crafts

    This winter season, give a gift from the sea. From seaweed pressings to shell collages, beach treasures make beautiful greetings and keepsakes. Join this Trustees workshop on February 4 from 10 – 1 at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate, 290 Argilla Road in Ipswich, to learn fun craft ideas and make marine art with our coastal educators. This program will start with a beach walk to collect coastal treasures, and then we will head inside for crafting. Craft supplies, extra beach treasures, and inspiration provided. $35.   • Saturday, November 18, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm – Rock Mosaics in the Garden

    Led by artist/educator Beth Klingher, students in this Berkshire Botanical Garden class on November 18 will create an outdoor rock mosaic to brighten their garden, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn how to cut glass, ceramic and other materials and to adhere them to a large garden rock or cement block using colored thin set cement. Your mosaic may represent a flower, a plant, a tiny animal, or an abstract design. These rock mosaics will weather the New England winters and provide a colorful spark for your garden regardless of the season. Bring your own rocks!

    Beth Klingher is an educator and an artist. Her primary medium is mixed-media art using mosaic glass, ceramic and stone. Her work includes both realistic and abstract art, with emphasis on natural landscapes. She has also completed a number of large-scale murals at hospitals, schools and with community groups. She works with schools all over the Northeast to integrate art into their curriculum. Beth’s studio and home are located in New Haven, CT. $75 for BBG members, $100 for nonmembers.   • Friday, March 12, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Book Making: Winter Nature Journal

    Sew your own softcover nature journal with pockets for holding outdoor finds. Learn to hone your observational skills to record winter nature sights and sounds. This Tower Hill class will be held indoors in a well ventilated classroom on March 12 from 1 – 3. Weather permitting we will go outside and test out our journals. All material is included.

    Instructor Suzanne Hauerstein is a professional teaching artist and the Coordinator of Volunteer & Intern Services at Tower Hill. She has over 25 years of experience designing and facilitating art-based programs for informal learning environments.     A fragrant day of fresh herbs that you make into liqueurs will be a high point of your summer activities.  Plimoth Plantation sponsors Fragrances and Luxuries from the Herb Garden on Tuesday, July 19, from 9 – 3.  You will include tiny amounts of these luscious herbal liqueurs into luxury chocolates and candies.  You’ll learn how to distill herbs for cosmetics and cookery.  Lastly, you’ll use dried herbs to make blends for fragrant pillows, sachets and potpourri.  The fee is $95 for Museum members and $120 for nonmembers.  Register at www.plimoth.org, or call 508-746-1662, ext 8359.

    Not too many years ago, our woods were home to Native Americans who lived their lives without visiting grocery stores, shopping malls, doctors’ offices, or video arcades. What did they eat? How did they stay healthy? What did they do for fun?

    Bonnie Drexler shows how to follow in their footsteps as we walk the Garden looking for food, shelter, medicines, and amusements.

    Back in the classroom, dye a headband with native plant dyes and make a birch-bark craft.

  • Thursday, October 1, 10:00 am – 12:30 pm – Apples, Apples, Apples

    Spend a morning at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, Massachusetts with Betsy Williams, proprietor of The Proper Season in Andover.  Apples, one of our most ancient and useful fruits, have played important parts in fall and winter celebrations for centuries.  Learn the history of this ancient and important fruit.  Make an apple candle to decorate your seasonal table, a spicy apple pomander, fragrant mast balls, apple-cinnamon ornaments, and two quarts of spicy Autumn Apple Potpourri.  Please bring floral scissors and an apron to class – this is a messy class, so be sure to wear old clothes!  Betsy will be giving a separate class in the afternoon (Glorious Autumn Pot), so plan to have lunch at Twigs and spend the day.  Cost of the Apples, Apples, Apples program is $50 for Tower Hill members, $55 for non-members.  Register on-line at www.towerhillbg.org.
