  • Saturday, September 24, 10:00 am – 12:30 pm – Propagation by Cuttings with Adam Wheeler

    Come join Adam Wheeler, Horticulture and Container Production Manager at Broken Arrow Nursery for this fun-filled, hands-on workshop focused on the propagation of plants from stem cuttings. Participants will be given a brief lecture that examines the techniques and skills required to grow plants from cuttings. Following the lecture, participants will construct their own home propagation systems and stick a selection of cuttings. The class will take place September 24 at Hollister House Garden, 300 Nettleton Hollow Road in Washington, Connecticut (Berkshires).

    Adam started work at Broken Arrow in 2004 after completing his BS degree in Urban Forestry and Landscape Horticulture at the University of Vermont. Adam manages plant propagation, container production and the acquisition and development of new plants. He is a past recipient of the Young Nursery Professional Award from the New England Nursery Association. He loves to share his passion for plants through photography and educational outreach. As a result, he lectures widely on a variety of subjects and is also an adjunct lecturer at Naugatuck Valley Community College and the Berkshire Botanical Garden. With his spare time he enjoys cultivating his eclectic collection of rare and unusual plants, rock climbing and competitive giant pumpkin growing.

  • Saturday, January 11, 12:30 pm – Annual Nepenthes Cutting Class

    The next meeting of the New England Carnivorous Plant Society will be held on January 11, 2014 at 12:30 pm at the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center, 1000 Elmwood Avenue, Providence, Rhode Island.

    This meeting will be their Annual Nepenthes Cutting Class.  Members and friends are encouraged to bring any overgrown Nepenthes that could use a little cutting back.  Following instruction on taking Nepenthes vine cuttings and tips for sucessful Nepenthes cutting propagation,  members will have the opportunity to take cuttings from the plants brought in to bring home and grow.  This is only possible when members bring in and allow others to take cuttings of their overgrown plants.  So if you have a plant that is vining and needs a little cutting please consider bringing it in!

  • Wednesday, June 15, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm – Propagation by Cuttings Workshop

    Join the Trustees of Reservation at Long Hill in Beverly on Wednesday, June 15, from 5 – 7, and learn to grow Long Hill’s signature plants from your own cuttings. Experienced propagators demonstrate setting up a propagation box, caring for your cuttings, and transplanting rooted plants. All materials provided. Members: $20. Nonmembers: $25.   • Saturday, June 26, 9:00 am – 12:00 noon – Propagating Trees and Shrubs from Cuttings

    Cuttings, one of Polly Hill’s favorite ways for sharing superior plants, produce plants genetically identical to the parent. Come to the Polly Hill Arboretum, 809 State Road, West Tisbury, on Saturday, June 26, beginning at 9 am, and join Jack Alexander, longtime Arnold Arboretum propagator, to learn how to propagate woody plants from softwood cuttings. After an introductory lecture, participants will collect cuttings from the Arboretum grounds, and then return to the greenhouse to learn techniques. You will leave with a small box of cuttings. Please bring a pair of hand pruners; a sharp knife and apron would also be a welcome accessory. Please pre-register; space is limited to 12.
