  • Friday, September 29 – Application Deadline for 2023 Boston Blooms with Daffodils

    Mayor Michelle Wu today announced that the Boston Parks and Recreation Department will distribute over 15,000 daffodil bulbs for planting on public ways citywide through the “Boston Blooms with Daffodils” beautification initiative started in 2011.

    Individuals, civic associations, church groups, sports leagues, scout troops, open space advocates, and parks friends are encouraged to sign up to participate. Last year, nearly a hundred community groups planted bulbs in neighborhoods across the City.

    Those interested in participating may fill out a form online at boston.gov/boston-blooms. The online application form will remain open until late September on a rolling basis. Due to limited supply, groups are not guaranteed bulbs, but the Parks Department will strive to accommodate all requests. The application deadline is September 29 (or sooner if demand exceeds supply).

    The plantings are anticipated to take place in approved locations on the weekends of October 21 and October 28. The Parks Department will contact interested groups and provide bulb pick-up instructions and dates. Groups and individuals are asked to use their own tools.

    The Boston Parks and Recreation Department encourages volunteers to take photos of their groups on planting days and share them via social media using the hashtag #BostonBlooms.

  • Saturday, May 6, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm, and Sunday, May 7, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Seven States Daffodil Society Show

    The annual Seven States Daffodil Society Show features hundreds of cut daffodil flowers in vibrant colors ranging from cream, lemon, and orange, to pink, red, and green. View an incredible display of blooms and learn about the classes and culture of different daffodil varieties. Judges will select the best specimens for awards. The show takes place at New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill on May 6 and 7. On your visit, explore New England Botanic Garden’s Field of Daffodils. Over a sloping hillside, more than 25,000 daffodils (Narcissus cvs.) come into bloom each year, and when they do, it’s a dramatic sight to behold.  This event is included with General Admission.  For information visit https://nebg.org/shows/

  • Friday, April 14 – Marathon Daffodil Volunteer Day

    Boston Marathon 2023 is Monday, April 17th, 2023.

    This is Boston Strong Marathon Daffodils’ tenth year, bringing a symbol of Hope, a tribute to Boston Strong, and a celebration of Spring and Patriots Day in Boston. We hope you will help welcome back the runners and the crowds. We hope you will help us thank our Boston healthcare workers.

    The goal is to continue the tradition by delivering thousands of potted Marathon Daffodils throughout Boston for the 127th BAA Boston Marathon. When the BAA Marathon was cancelled during the COVID pandemic, Marathon Daffodils kept the city blooming by distributing thousands of potted daffodil plants to our healthcare facilities.

    Thanks to your continued support, we hope to keep the spirit of Marathon Daffodils strong by funding this volunteer community endeavor that provides as many daffodil plants as possible to brighten our city.

    Volunteers are needed  to distribute the daffodil plants on Friday, April 14th, 2023. The Garden Club of the Back Bay has helped with this effort in the Back Bay for a number of years, but all are welcome throughout the Metropolitan Area to participate in their communities.     Tower Hill’s field of over 25,000 daffodils is a must see for anyone eager to bridge the gap from winter to summer. Discover the inspiration these flowers provide by sketching, writing poetry, or taking photos for our contest. Children will love the daffodil parade, sing-along, and story walk. Enjoy fun activities throughout the day and learn about the enormous diversity of daffodil types and the best ways to grow them at home. Daffodil Day takes place this year on Saturday, April 21 from 10 – 4, and is free with admission to the Garden, located at 11 French Drive in Boylston.   • From the Archives: Buying Speakers

    The Garden Club of the Back Bay has welcomed an impressive roster of guest speakers to our meetings since we began. The usual process is to identify a topic of interest to our members, and then search for an appropriate person to deliver the information. In 1983, however, late members Stella Trafford and Susan Davis attended an auction held for the benefit of the Arnold Arboretum, which was held at the Case Estates in Weston. They made successful bids on two distinguished speakers – Corliss Engle, who promised to talk on the topic of Begonias, and Lily Rice, whose subject was Daffodils. Each high bid was $25. Additionally, Stella and Susan purchased two spring garden tours: the Haffenreffer garden in Chestnut Hill ($40), and Uplands in Manchester ($70).  Corliss Engle, whose contributions to the Begonia Society led to the naming of Begonia ‘Corliss Engle’ in her honor. gave her presentation on November 10, 1983, and Ms. Rice spoke on March 15, 1984.  We have not yet found mention in our records of taking the two tours purchased.  To see the array of programs presented over the years, we encourage you to visit https://bostonflora.com/history/, and if any recent speaker is of interest, email info@bostonflora.com and we can try to put you in touch.  Photo of a begonia cross of ‘Corliss Engle’ below is by Guy Savard.

  • Saturday, April 26, 10:30 am – 1:00 pm – Drifts of Daffodils

    Join well known gardener Jeffrey Steele for an in-depth program on naturalizing daffodils at visits to two private gardens on Saturday, April 26 in a program sponsored by the Berkshire Botanical Garden. Each garden demonstrates extensive plantings using contrasting methods for naturalizing daffodils. Timed for the height of the bloom, this program will cover the planning, varietal selection, planting and cultivation to enable participants to successfully create daffodil meadows or woodlands. A short history of daffodils will be included in the program.

    Jeffrey A. Steele is owner of Ashley Falls Nursery, a landscape and garden design and consultation firm with a special interest in historic gardens. He was previously with the Atlanta Botanical Garden and Wilcox Park (a Victorian strolling park restoration in Rhode Island) and was a past director of BBG. The daffodil is his favorite flower, and he has been building a collection for the last 15 years.

    Participants can choose to carpool or drive separately. Those joining the carpool should meet in the parking lot at Berkshire Botanical Garden for a 9:45 am departure.   • Volunteers Needed to Plant Daffodils October 22 or October 29

    Mayor Thomas M. Menino has announced that 40,000 daffodil bulbs will be planted in late October (October 22 or 29) along Boston’s public ways, including sidewalks, medians and paths.  The Boston Parks and Recreation Department is seeking volunteers to assist with the plantings and suggestions for locations to be beautified.  Sign up today by filling out a form to support the daffodil planting program at www.cityofboston.gov/parks/daffodil_signup.aspx.  Take photos of your group planting.  Photos may be viewed on Facebook and will be submitted to local newspapers.  Email parks@cityofboston.gov if you need more information or have any questions.

    Come to the 4H Fairgrounds, 51 South Chelmsford Road, Westford, September 24 and 25, for the Middlesex Conservation District Fall Bulb and Perennial Sale – tulips, daffodils, alliums (below), unusual bulbs, iris, perennials and garden supplies (compost bins, bulb fertilizer, kitchen scrap buckets, etc). All items may be ordered in advance through September 4 to ensure best selection. To place an order, visit the MCD website at www.middlesexconservation.org and download an order form, or call 978 692 9395 and obtain a brochure by mail.
