  • Saturday, September 16, 10:00 am – Garden Thyme: The Autumn Queen – Dahlias

    Glorious blooms extend late into the garden season and are true show stoppers at agricultural fairs both in the 19th century and today. Come to Old Sturbridge Village on Saturday, September 16 at 10 am and discuss dahlia culture, staking, planting, and tuber care for years of elegant enjoyment. Garden Thyme programs are held on the third Saturday of each month and are FREE for members of Old Sturbridge Village. Led by Village horticultural and agricultural staff, these programs and workshops are held at various sites and deal with a variety of plant-related themes and topics.   • Thursday, August 31, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Digging Dahlias

    On Thursday, August 31, from 10 – 12, come with Berkshire Botanical Garden to Something to Crow About, an extraordinary dahlia farm located in Cornwall in the northwest corner of Connecticut, where dahlia grower Amanda Chase will lead our group through her collection of 2500 plants (over 200 cultivars) to see these beauties in full flower. Not only is the end of August peak season for dahlia bloom, it is also the perfect time to learn about cultivating dahlias. Amanda Chase will point out some of the best varieties to grow and provide tips for maintaining these plants from year to year, such as when to plant, when to lift, and how to store during the winter months. Following the tour participants will be able to order tubers, and buy plants or cut flowers – a great way to start a collection, or add to an existing one, of these amazing plants from our neighboring country south of the border.

  • Thursday, February 14, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Sensational Dahlias: Something for Everyone

    Have you always wanted to grow dahlias but think they’re too much trouble? Did you know there are 18 different forms of dahlias in sizes from 2 inches to over 10 inches in diameter in nearly every color of the rainbow? This program will focus on how to identify each of the 18 different dahlia forms, their cultivation, care,dividing and storage techniques. While most flowers are winding down for the season in August, dahlias are just starting to hit their stride. Come learn about this sensational late season flower from Donna Lane of Lane Interiors & Gardens on Thursday, February 14, from 7 – 8:30 at Elm Bank in Wellesley. $10 for Mass Hort members, $15 for nonmembers.   • Thursday, September 20, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Saving Your Tender Plants

    Thursdays at the Hort continue at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, on Thursday, September 20. Why compost those gorgeous tender plants you have grown all summer? There are ways to save many of these plants without bringing the entire plant indoors. Learn the proper way to store and save Dahlias, Cannas and other tender tubers and bulbs, as well as how to take successful cuttings and winter over many other plants. The lecture will feature Carrie Waterman of Noanett Garden Club.

    Presentations will begin at 7pm and go until all questions are answered. The classes are priced at $12 for members and $15 for non-members unless otherwise indicated. There is no need to pre-register and you may pay at the class.  For directions, visit www.masshort.org.

  • Saturday, May 14, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm – Garden Club of Buzzards Bay Plant Sale

    The Garden Club of Buzzards Bay will hold its annual plant sale at 783 Dartmouth Street in South Dartmouth on Saturday, May 14, from 9 – noon.  Admission and parking are free.   • Saturday and Sunday, August 14 – August 15 and September 11 – September 12 – Rhode Island Dahlia Society Shows

    Two Rhode Island Dahlia Society Shows are scheduled for 2010.  The first, to be held at the Washington County Fair on August 14 and 15, will run from 11:00 am Saturday through 8 pm Sunday.  The second, at the Cold Spring Community Center in Wickford, Rhode Island, will take place Saturday, September 11, from 3 – 7, and Sunday, September 12, from 10 – 4.  The 2010 Artistic Arrangement classes are sure to produce some intriguing entries.  Contact Walter Taylor at 401-294-3486 or email him at ride3245@ride.ri.net.  RIDS Show Rules and Sections will be posted, as available, at www.rhodeislanddahliasociety.org.
