  • Sunday, May 2, 11:00 am – 5:00 pm- Castle Hill on The Crane Estate Open House

    In celebration of spring, The Trustees of Reservations invite you to the 2nd Annual, FREE Spring Open House at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate to enjoy a day of fun. Plant a seedling and help them recover some of the hundreds of trees lost in the recent nor’easter. Pack a picnic and they’ll provide lawn games such as croquet and bocce ball, a Maypole dance, self-guided tours of the Great House and grounds, refreshments, and more. Please feel free to bring friends and family, but leave furry friends at home.

    The Open House thanks the public for its support of The Trustees’ ongoing restoration of the Castle Hill grounds, which in recent years has included historic plantings and restorations of the Italian Garden and the Great House forecourt. This February, The Trustees began the first phase of a 3-year renovation plan of the Grand Allee, the one-half mile long, undulating, grassy lawn framed by classical sculptures, Norway spruce, and pine hedgerows. Phase One of the project includes the removal of approximately 150 trees and the planting of 65 7-foot Norway spruce and White Pines.

    The Allee Restoration was disrupted by the late February nor’easter that wreaked havoc on the North Shore. Castle Hill was hit particularly hard, with more than 300 trees coming down in the storm. Crews worked tirelessly to clean up the property and make it safe for the public. Much work, including replanting trees and stabilizing stripped embankments, remains. The Trustees invite the public to help by planting seedlings in celebration of spring at the May 2nd Open House.

  • Thursday, February 4, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Garden Design: A Perfect Plant Palette

    Like dabs of paint and brush strokes in a painting, individual plants and their placement are what creates a garden or yard. It’s easy to walk into a nursery or garden store and become overwhelmed by the wide selection of plants, tools, soil choices, gardening tips, and helpful accessories. With so many choices how is it possible to comprise plant schemes with ease? This class will give an overview of the first steps to take in creating your perfect plant palette. You  will discuss the basic design features of plants and how to use them in combination to make your available garden space into the retreat you wish it to be. Topics will include using plant forms to define outdoor rooms, using leaves and/or bark as a prominent feature of the garden, and using flowers and fruits to accent the garden. You’ll talk about color theory and the use of texture to create a balanced composition in the landscape.  This course, sponsored by Brookline Adult Education, will be held on Thursday, February 4, beginning at 7 pm, at Brookline High School.  The fee is $28, and you may register on-line at www.brooklineadulted.org, or by phone at 617-730-2700.  The instructor, Kimberly Turner, is a principal of KDTurner Design, a landscape architecture firm in Newton.  She has a background in both horticulture and landscape architecture and is the author of the soon to be published book Botany For Designers.

  • Garden Club of the Back Bay – Floral Wreaths

    Some of our designers specialize in floral looks, and the unusual coloration of this wreath was much admired by the purchaser.  This wreath can stay up long after the holidays are over.

  • Wednesday – Friday, January 13 – 15, and Monday – Tuesday, January 19-20 – NOFA Course in Organic Land Care

    The 9th annual NOFA Course in Organic Land Care will be held January 13, 14, 15, 19 and 20, 2010 at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, 6 Plum Island Tpke., Newburyport, MA. (pictured below).  This 5-day intensive course trains and accredits professionals to practice organic land care (caring for land without the use of synthetic pesticides or soil amendments). It is recommended for landscapers, designers, municipal and parks employees, horticulturists, master gardeners and entrepreneurs.

    $550 Course Course fee includes a delicious, catered lunch daily

  • Saturday, December 5 – Sunday, December 6 – Crane Estate Holiday Open House

    Kick off the holiday season at the Crane Estate as local florists and designers transform the Great House into a feast for the senses.

    Take a self-guided tour and enjoy cider, fresh-baked cookies, and the Gift Gallery with distinctive gifts.

    Throughout the weekend, there will be scheduled events including a tree-lighting, live music, a dance presentation, and more.

    Please consider bringing an unwrapped toy donation to the Gift Sleigh to benefit Ipswich Caring.

  • Wednesday, October 14, 10:00 – 12 noon – Designing Principles

    Please join The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts for a series of three interactive design lecture/demonstrations on flower arranging at The Espousal Center, 554 Lexington Street, Waltham, Massachusetts.  The first session will be Wednesday, October 14, the second will take place Wednesday, January 27, 2010, and the final session will be on Wednesday, April 28, 2010.  Massachusetts designers, among the best in the country, will teach you what they do and how they do it – top secrets are often revealed.  Reservations are being accepted on  a first come, first served basis, and must be made in writing.  The total fee for all three sessions is $25 (what a deal!).  Make your check out to GCFM,Inc., and mail it with your name, address, telephone number, email address, and Garden Club affiliation to Robin Murphy, PO Box 3263, Wareham, MA 02571.  There is a registration deadline of October 1, so get on to this right now.
