  • Saturday, October 16, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm – Cogswell’s Grant Pumpkin Day

    Historic New England hosts the Cogswell’s Grant Pumpkin Day at Cogswell’s Grant in Essex, Massachusetts, from 11 – 4 on Saturday, October 16.  Celebrate the arrival of fall. Enjoy horse-drawn wagon rides, choose pumpkins to decorate, compete in a pumpkin pie-eating contest, do crafts, play games, and try cider pressing. Enjoy hot mulled apple cider and homemade pumpkin pie.   • Sunday, May 9, 10 am – 4 pm – Lilac Sunday

    Of the thousands of flowering plants in the Arnold Arboretum, only one, the lilac, is singled out each year for a daylong celebration. Gather at the Arboretum to picnic (allowed on this special day only!), watch dance performances, tour the lilac collection, and more. Event takes place rain or shine.   • Saturdays, October 31 and November 21, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm – City of Boston Hazardous Waste Drop Off Days

    Get rid of the paint, the aerosol cans, the chemicals, the works, on either Saturday, October 31 at the UMass Boston Boston Harbor Campus, 100 Morrissey Blvd. or on November 21 at the Boston Public Works Yard, 315 Gardner Street in West Roxbury.  Log on to www.cityofboston.gov/publicworks/recycling/hazardouswaste.asp for directions and a full list of items accepted. No televisions or computers, please, and bring proof of residency with you.

  • Saturday, November 7, 10 am – 12 noon – Deer Resistant Plants, Winter Garden Protection, and Plants for Winter Interest

    Join The Trustees of Reservations at the Long Hill Horticulture Center in Beverly, Massachusetts for this special workshop on Saturday, November 7, from 10:00 am to noon.

    The  horticulture staff will lead a walk through the Sedgwick gardens followed by an indoor presentation to inspire all gardeners before the snow starts to fly.  They will demonstrate  methods for protecting deer favorites, show you deer resistant shrubs, and give you the best tips on winterizing your garden. The presentation will inspire you with beautiful winter gardens and remind you that you can have something blooming every month of the year, as they do in the Sedgwick Gardens.   • Saturday, October 18, 2:00 pm – Who’s Watching You?

    Come to Russells Garden Center in Wayland on Saturday, October 18, beginning at 2 pm, for an up-close encounter with live owls! Presentation by Naturalist Marcia Wilson of Eyes on Owls and hosted at Russell’s as part of its Bird Lovers’ Weekend (October 17 and 18, 11 – 4). The program includes a slide show and is a wonderfully interactive and entertaining way to learn about these secretive birds. Bring your camera!

    The Berkshires’ longest running and best-known community event will take place during the first weekend in October, October 3 – 4, from 10 – 5, at the Berkshire Botanical Gardens. An old fashioned, family-oriented community festival with something for everyone, including rides, games, food, music, crafts, giant tag sale, and lots more.     The library staff strives to help students and researchers become increasingly independent users of information resources by providing instruction on library research methods that enable them to refine their inquiries, understand the range of tools available, and select the appropriate resources. Join the library staff on Saturday, September 26 at 10:30 a.m. for an information session describing the scope of the collection, including its visual resources and extensive archives.
