  • Tuesday, June 24, 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm – East Boston Walking Tour

    Another reminder that joining The Garden Club of the Back Bay will give you access to interesting programs throughout the year. Another pop-up is scheduled for June 24 – an exclusive East Boston Walking Tour. Join GCBB member Claire Corcoran on a walking tour of a selection of East Boston’s community-based environmental organizations’ sites and projects, including Tree Eastie, Eastie Farm, and the Mary Ellen Walsh Greenway. These three groups have received funding from an array of sources including the Garden Club of the Back Bay. Claire is looking forward to sharing some of their work and results with our club. This walk is offered to GCBB and BHGC members as well as other civic groups. Please bring a water bottle and sunscreen, and comfortable shoes.     Meet at East Boston’s Memorial Park. The entrance is at the corner of Porter Street and Thompson Drive (google maps calls it East Boston Memorial Park). There is ample parking available and is a short walk from the Airport T stop.

  • Saturday, December 7, 8:00 am – An Oasis for Birds

    Discover the abundant birdlife at Belle Isle Marsh Reservation, a restored wildlife sanctuary at 1399 Bennington Street in East Boston. We will walk with a guide from the DCR while birding for a distance of a mile on easy level terrain. A spotting scope will be available for viewing. Please bring bring binoculars and/or a spotting scope if you have them. Reasonable accommodations available upon request. Recommended for adults and children ages 10 and older but all ages and experience levels are welcome. All children must be accompanied by an adult. This is a free program, beginning at 8 am.   • Saturday, March 27, 9:00 am – Birding Belle Isle and Vicinity

    Belle Isle Marsh Reservation on Bennington Street in East Boston is known as one of Massachusetts’ birding hot spots.  Join DCR and Boston Natural Areas Network to look for snipe and waterfowl on Saturday, March 27, beginning at 9:00 am.  Binoculars will be available to borrow.  Boston Natural Areas Network, organized in 1977, works to preserve, expand and improve urban open space through community organizing, acquisition, ownership, programming, development and management of special kinds of urban land – Urban Wilds, Greenways and Community Gardens. In all of its endeavors, BNAN is guided by local citizens advocating for their open spaces and assisting them to preserve and shape their communities.  For more information, log on to www.bostonnatural.org.

  • Tuesday, March 2, and Wednesday, March 10 4:30 pm – 8:30 pm – City of Boston Community Workshop on Climate Action

    The City of Boston will hold two Community Workshops on Climate Action, the first on Tuesday, March 2, from 4:30 – 8:30 pm, at Old South Church, 645 Boylston Street, in the Mary Norton Hall on the Second Floor, and the second on Wednesday, March 10, from 4:40 – 8:30 pm, at the Metcalf Ballroom, George Sherman Union, Boston University, 775 Commonwealth Avenue.  Target neighborhoods under discussion in the March 2 session will be East Boston, Charlestown, South Boston, and in the Downtown area, Chinatown, North Leather District, and the West End. Neighborhoods under discussion on March 10 include Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Kenmore, South End, Allston, Brighton, and the Fenway. Interpretation available on request in American Sign Language, Chinese, Portuguese and Spanish.  You must register in order to ensure a space at this workshop.  You may register online at www.cityofboston.gov/calendar/#/?i=2.

  • Saturday, December 5, 4 – 5:30 pm – Winter Lights Along the Greenway

    Enjoy the East Boston Greenway lit up with festive luminarias and a holiday sing along with local performers and carolers.  Hot chocolate and cookies will keep you warm.  Meet at the blue caboose near South Bremen and Marginal Streets.  Snow date Sunday, December 6.

    The Friends of East Boston Greenway and Boston Natural Areas Network are sponsoring this event, and they need help from community groups, businesses and individuals.  Here is how you can help:  Make batches of 50 luminarias (materials will be provided and delivered to your worksite or other location – bags, sand and candles). Or, if you’d rather, volunteers from your group can attend a group lunimaria making session, date and time to be announced.  Your sponsorship will be recognized by a sign on the Greenway.  You can volunteer to be a monitor the night of the event, watching over a section and lighting any candles that go out.  You can donate food or refreshments, or hang event flyers or posters.  With the support of volunteers, the Friends hope to make at least 350 – 400 luminarias.  If you can help, call Candice Cook at 617-542-7696, or email candice@bostonnatural.org.
