    Join herbalist, artist and ritualist Nicole Irene for a delightful, hands-on workshop featuring the enchanting world of herbal medicine on Saturday, February 7, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Berkshire Botanical Garden. Embark on a journey to create two powerful plant remedies, fire cider and elderberry syrup, time-honored elixirs celebrated for their immune-boosting properties. This immersive experience combines traditional herbal medicine’s rich lore and wisdom with the joy of creative expression.

    In this make-and-take class, you will:

    • Discover the history, medicinal properties, and health benefits of both fire cider and elderberry syrup;
    • Participate in detailed step-by-step demonstrations on how to make these recipes from scratch;
    • Enjoy a collaborative, fun, and creative environment while crafting your own bottles of fire cider and elderberry syrup;
    • Take home a bottle each of Elderberry Syrup and Fire Cider, along with the knowledge and confidence to recreate them on your own.

    This workshop welcomes all who share a passion for the power of plants. Be prepared to roll up your sleeves, get a little messy, immerse yourself in the magic of herbal medicine, and leave with two traditional folk remedies that will support your health and well-being naturally.

    Nicole Irene holds a master’s degree in fine art, two herbal certifications from Dandelion Herbal Center and Sage Mountain Botanical Sanctuary, and is a Reiki-trained ordained minister. Nicole has a love for local farms and sustainable, organic agriculture, and enjoys cooking nourishing meals and experimenting with her own herbal preparations at her home in Stockbridge.   • Monday, February 10, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm – Herbal Class: Elderberry

    Join Wright-Locke Farm in Winchester in our next series of herbal classes, Elderberry! The class on February 10 at 6:30 pm will be led by Sarah O’Neill.

    Known for its immune boosting properties the Elderberry has many health benefits. We will explore the Elder plant folklore, historical uses, medicinal properties and cultivation methods.

    Each participant will take home a .5 lb bag of frozen elderberries to craft their own unique Elderberry syrup to incorporate in your wellness routine.

  • Thursday, September 19, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Preserving the Tastes of Summer Workshop

    Enjoy the fragrance and taste of fresh herbs while you create some delightful products that will capture the essence of herbs for your own use. in this Massachusetts Horticultural Society class featuring Karen O’Brien of The Green Woman’s Garden, you will make herb butter, herb vinegar and an herbal liqueur. Handouts with recipes will be provided.

    Karen O’Brien runs her herbal business “The Green Woman’s Garden” in the central MA town of Mendon. She has herbs and ornamental flowers for sale, runs workshops on various herbal adventures, and occasionally participates at farmers markets and fairs. She is the Development Chair of The Herb Society of America, currently serves as Chairman of the New England Unit of H.S.A., is Secretary of the International Herb Association, and is President of the Greenleaf Garden Club of Milford. She is the editor and contributing author to the latest Herb of the Year book on elderberry entitled Elder, produced by the IHA.  The class will take place at Elm Bank on Thursday, September 19, beginning at 7 pm.

  • Monday, July 18, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm – Herbal Dyes and Inks

    Spend a practical day on Monday, July 18, from 9 – 5 at Plimoth Plantation dyeing with wool and silk for embroidery, and preparing ink.  Under the guidance of renowned herbalist Christina Stapley, you’ll use fresh and dried dyes to illustrate dyeing methods and techniques and their results, while experimenting with leaves, roots, flowers, and barks of plants such as madder, woad, sumac, tansy, elder tree, logwood and elderberry.  You’ll look at the importance of herbs in embroidery, needlework, and tapestry design.  Bring your sketch pad.  Fee for Museum members: $95; nonmembers: $120.  Register at www.plimoth.org, or call 508-746-1622, ext. 8359.
