    The Blue Hills Climate Action Coalition presents a virtual lecture series on the climate crisis, showcasing a diverse mix of perspectives from within the climate crisis movement. Speakers will include climate change researchers, activists, youth leaders, and social scientists covering a variety of issues related to climate change, community resilience, and grounds for action. The series will be held on Zoom; pre-registration is required to receive the link to join the video-conference. 

    On Thursday, December 3, at 6:30, hear about A Green New Deal for Boston. What could the Green New Deal look like at the municipal level? Boston City Councilor and mayoral candidate Michelle Wu will share her recently published 15-point plan to address climate change and the important role municipalities can play in the future of our planet.     The Algonquin (Enbridge) transmission compressor station sited in the Fore River Basin brings many dangers to our region and to our planet. Alice Arena is the founder and president of the Fore River Residents Against the Compressor Station in Weymouth, and on November 12 at 6:30 pm on Zoom she will discuss what a compressor is and does, what it means for our health and safety, and what the push for more methane distribution and use will do to our planet.

    Saturday and Sunday, November 3 and 4, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm – Second Annual Blue Hills Great Estates Fall Foliage Weekend

    Enjoy fall’s riot of color at peak season by visiting three historic estates built in the Blue Hills. The Eustis Estate, Wakefield Estate, and Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate present special events throughout the weekend of November 3 and 4. Tickets to view the foliage at each location are $5 for members of Historic New England and $10 for nonmembers. Visit all three and get a free program voucher to redeem at one of the estates through December 2018.

    At the Eustis Estate:

    Landscape Tours: Hourly from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Get a new perspective at the Eustis Estate with this thirty-minute guided tour. Explore the fields, woodland, and gardens and learn about their history. The tour also examines the exterior architecture of the house and other original buildings built between 1878 and 1902. Bring comfortable walking shoes and be sure to dress appropriately for the weather.

    Fall Craft Workshops: Drop in between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Make an autumn-themed craft and bring home a reminder of the beautiful fall colors. Included with Eustis Estate admission. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

    $10 nonmembers

    The Garden Conservancy is proud to partner with the Mary M.B. Wakefield Estate to bring you this Greater Boston Area Open Day on Saturday, June 9. Each June, the Wakefield Estate welcomes visitors to celebrate the annual blooming of hundreds of Polly Wakefield’s Kousa dogwood trees during “Dogwood Days”. As host garden, the Wakefield Estate has helped us line up several remarkable gardens, some with important historical horticultural pedigrees and others reflecting remarkable accomplishments of local gardeners and landscape designers.

    Begin your day at the Wakefield Estate, pick up a map and head out to see some or all of these great and inspiring gardens. A guided tour of the Wakefield Estate will be offered at 1 p.m., rain or shine.

    The Trustees 5th Annual “Home Sweet Home” Historic Open House Day will take place on Saturday, May 19th from 10AM to 4PM. This year’s theme, The Art of the Garden: Inspiration Grows Here, will celebrate The Trustees’ public gardens, a living documentary of Massachusetts horticulture and design traditions. Many of these gardens are part of the landscapes of Trustees historic sites, the former homes of historical figures, literati, titans of industry, political leaders, artists and more and span a 300-year timeline from the Colonial Era to the Modern Movement. Come experience all the beauty, history, and unique stories contained within each home, as well as the exquisitely designed gardens and stunning natural landscapes. The ten sites open free of charge are Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, Castle Hill on the Crane Estate in Ipswich, the Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate in Canton, the Stevens-Coolidge Place in North Andover, The Old Manse in Concord, The Ashley House in Sheffield, Naumkeag House & Gardens in Stockbridge, the Mission House in Stockbridge, The Folly at Field Farm in Williamstown (pictured)  and the William Cullen Bryant Homestead in Cummington.     Registration is now open for ten information-packed evenings classes designed to help home gardeners be more effective at their favorite pastime. The Massachusetts Master Gardener Association is sponsoring Thursday evening classes, March 22 – May 24 from 6:30 – 8:30. The Home Hort Series covers all of the topics studied by certified Master Gardeners, but in a streamlined format suited to busy lifestyles: the program does not require outside reading, homework, volunteering, or testing. Topics include:

    • Perennials • Landscape Design Basics • Woody Plants & Pruning • Lawn Care & Alternatives • Vegetable Culture • Soil • Weed Ecology • Botany • Diseases & Pests • Nomenclature

    Classes are conveniently held at the historic Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate, a Trustees of Reservations property, 2468 Washington Street, Canton, just minutes off Rt. 128, south of Boston.     Eric Eisenhaurer of the Massachusetts Master Gardeners Association will show you how to grow beautiful healthy roses in your garden, without sprays and pesticides, by learning which roses are disease resistant, winter-hardy and the most reliable bloomers.     This Massachusetts Master Gardeners talk on Tuesday, February 20 at 6:30 with Paul Steen covers a variety of shade situations and covers the unique problems/opportunities of shade gardening. We then cover the best shade plants and how to select them so that your garden is in bloom spring through fall. Even discuss how to have winter interest. Handout included covers a wide variety of shade plants and their cultural properties. The event takes place at the Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate in Canton.     Whether your pet is a cat, dog, chicken or “other” they have the potential to be exposed to your plants either indoors, outdoors, or both. There are many sources of information about plant toxicity but they can often conflict with each other. This Massachusetts Master Gardeners presentation with April Daley will help you to understand what “toxic” and “poisonous” mean to your pets as well as a method to evaluate the pet, the plant as well as horticultural practices and how much risk is involved in each situation. The event will be held at the Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate in Canton on Tuesday, January 23 from 6:30 – 8, and the cost is $25.     Saturday and Sundays at the Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate in Canton, Massachusetts feature the Bradley Estate Holly Daze Open Houses with each room of the Estate decorated on a seasonal garden theme with family-oriented holiday music and games, hot drinks and festive cookies. Music by local youth and adult artists, and decorations by area garden club members and scout groups. Members of The Trustees of Reservations $5, nonmembers $10, children free.
