    On Thursday, February 19, from 9 – 4, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society will host a school gardens conference at its horticultural center at 900 Washington Street in Wellesley. The day will explore regional best practices for planning a garden that will endure seasons and administration changes, meet educational goals and serve generations of healthy, growing children. You can learn how to champion a successful garden program in your school district from speakers, workshops on a variety of topics including volunteer involvement, curriculum and garden planning, and from a panel of presenters of school volunteers, staff and organizational supporters. $35 for Mass Hort members, $45 for nonmembers.

    Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s Festival of Trees will showcase over 75 trees and a new addition to the festival, Snow Village at Elm Bank ―for children and adults to enjoy. This annual festival, in its sixth year, will take place from November 28 until December 14, at Mass Hort’s Elm Bank property, 900 Washington Street, Wellesley, MA 02482.

    The Festival of Trees, displayed in the Hunnewell Carriage House, offers beautifully decorated holiday trees that are donated and decorated by local businesses, garden clubs, and individuals. Visitors “vote” with their raffle tickets, in hopes of being the tree winner at the end of the festival. Visitors can enjoy the decorated buildings and grounds at Elm Bank with a stroll or a horse-drawn wagon ride. For the young at heart, there is Pajamas – Story Time on Friday nights and Santa Visits.

    Snow Village at Elm Bank is a wonderful addition to the holiday spirit of the Festival of Trees. Bill Meagher of Needham graciously donated the product of his thirteen year “hobby” of building Christmas villages and trains. Massachusetts Horticultural Society is delighted to share his enchanting displays featuring trains, Christmas in the City (Boston of course!), Fenway Park, New England Villages, and hundreds of decorated houses and lights. This amazing scenery in miniature is sure to get kids excited about the holiday season.

    Admission is $10 for adults, $6 for children 12 and over, children under 12, no charge. The Mass Hort member rate is $8 for adults. The festival is open November 28-December 14; Wednesdays and Thursdays, 4-8pm and Friday through Sunday, 10am-8 pm. The Festival is open weekday mornings, by appointment, for nursery school and senior tours.

  • Thursday, November 13, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Seasonal Floral Arrangements: A Demonstration

    Spend Thursday evening, November 13, from 7 – 8:30 pm, and learn the basics of floral arrangements to decorate your home. Learn to use what you have, how to buy sensibly and how to get the greatest impact for your effort! Watch as Marisa McCoy demonstrates how to make traditional and modern designs appropriate for the fall season. Learn the mechanics of arrangements, rules that help, and myths that hinder. Find your confidence in arranging to make your own autumn arrangements, just in time for a Thanksgiving centerpiece.

    Marisa McCoy is a nationally accredited Master Flower Show Judge, a Senior Associate at the Museum of Fine Arts, and frequent exhibitor in Art in Bloom and the New England Spring Flower Show. Marisa enthusiastically shares her knowledge at Mass Hort’s Floral Design Course and at other botanical centers. This Massachusetts Horticultural Society evening will be held in the Parkman Room in the Education Building at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley. $10 for Mass Hort members, $15 for nonmembers.   • Saturday, October 25, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Floral Design for Jewelry and Crafts

    Award winning floral jewelry designer Sarah Boynton will be offering a class on the basics of how to create beautiful jewelry out of dried plant material. The class will be held from 10 – 12 noon in the Parkman Room at Elm Bank on Saturday, October 25, from 10 – noon.

    Talent and creativity can transform plants from around our gardens and woodlands into such realistic pieces of jewelry. The picture below is an Egyptian necklace which took first place at the Philadelphia Flower Show in 2010.   • Tuesday, October 14, Tuesday, January 13, and Tuesday, April 14, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Designing Workshops

    The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts will present a three part design workshop in 2014/2015, on Tuesdays, October 14, January 13, and April 14, in the Hunnewell Building of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley.  The fee for all three sessions is $135, which includes all materials and instruction.  If a registrant cannot make any workshop, he or she may designate another to take his or her place, or may send someone to take the flowers and container home.

    All attendees will need: clippers or floral snippers, a notebook, a box to carry the arrangement home, and a clean-up bag.  If Wellesley schools are closed for snow, the workshop will be rescheduled to the next day.  Mail your check, made out to GCFM, Inc., to Fluffy Winner, PO Box 457, West Falmouth, MA 02574.  Include your name, address, Garden Club name, telephone number, and email address.

  • Saturday, September 27, 10:00 am – 11:30 am – Cooking with Cranberries

    The Massachusetts Horticultural Society in conjunction with the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA) at Tufts University are pleased to announce they will be hosting the next Talk and Taste public lecture on the theme of Cooking with Cranberries on Saturday, September 27th from 10 -11:30 am at the Mass Hort property at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, MA. Featured speakers include: Blue Ginger’s Pastry Chef – Michele Fadden; Dr. Diane McKay, nutrition scientist at the Tufts HNRCA; and David Fiske, Horticultural Director, Massachusetts Horticultural Society for a three–part lecture on cooking, nutrition and gardening.

    On Friday, September 12, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society and the Perennial Plant Association are teaming up to offer a day-long symposium entitled Exploring Design & Perennial Selection for the Landscape. Some of the best writers and creative plantsmen and women in the business will be here, and you’re invited to listen, learn and ask questions.   • Tuesdays, September 9 – November 18, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm – MMGA Home Horticulture Series

    The Massachusetts Master Gardener Association announces the MMGA Home Horticulture Series: The More You Know, The More You Can Grow!  This program is a ten-week evening class taught by Master Gardeners that will provide a comprehensive introduction to horticulture, giving home gardeners a foundation for enhancing their skills.  Topics to be covered include Nomenclature, Propagation, Turf & Alternatives, Soil, Botany, Weed Ecology, Vegetable Culture, Diseases & Pests, Perennial Culture, Woody Plants, and Pruning.  The Fall Session will take place Tuesday evenings, September 9 – November 18, from 6:30 – 8 at Elm Bank Reservation, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley.  The cost for the program is $250, due upon registration.  For more information, visit www.massmastergardeners.org.

Sample an array of herb-kissed food products, which will enliven your meals throughout the year, and begin your own herbal adventure.     Karen O’Brien runs her herbal business, The Green Woman’s Garden, www.greenwomansgarden.com, in the central MA town of Mendon. She has unusual herb plants, including medicinal, for sale, runs workshops on various herbal adventures, and occasionally participates at farmers markets and fairs.

    She is the Development Chair of The Herb Society of America, currently serves as Chairman of the New England Unit of H.S.A., is Secretary of the International Herb Association, and is President of the Greenleaf Garden Club of Milford.

    A member of Garden Writers Association, she is the editor and contributing author to the latest Herb of the Year book on Artemisia, produced by the IHA.

  • Saturday, September 27, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Create Your Own Tropical Terrarium

    A fun, hands-on workshop, led by Art Scarpa of the Cactus and Succulent Society, will take place Saturday, September 27 at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley. Create a tropical terrarium using a heavy glass jar with lid and an assortment of miniature plants suitable for an east or north window or for growing under artificial light. Participants will learn how to care for the plants, how to choose soil mix ingredients, and how to landscape with decorative stones. All materials are provided.

    Art was awarded Mass Hort’s Gold Medal in 2013 and has spoken at and led workshops at garden clubs and flower shows all over the Northeast.
    He is a founder and past president of the Cactus & Succulent Society of Massachusetts, and is certified as a judge by the Cactus & Succulent Society of America. Art has won multiple Best in Show awards for his entries at the Boston Flower & Garden Show, the Newport Flower Show and regional cactus and succulent shows.
