  • Thursday, March 26, 5:30 pm – Emerald Necklace Conservancy Annual Meeting and Lecture

Please join the Emerald Necklace Conservancy on Thursday, March 26 at the African Meeting House, 46 Joy Street in Beacon Hill, for the 2015 Annual Meeting and Lecture, featuring Dr. Carolyn Finney speaking on Radical Presence: Black Faces, White Spaces and Stories of Possibility.

Dr. Finney will explore the relationship of African Americans to the environment and to the environmental movement. Drawing on “green” conversations with black people from around the country, Dr. Finney considers the power of resistance and resilience in the emergence of creative responses to environmental and social challenges in our cities and beyond. Dr. Finney’s love of environment was inspired by a backpacking trip around the world and numerous years living in Nepal. She is an assistant professor in environmental science, policy and management at the University of California Berkeley, and a member of the U.S. National Parks Advisory Board. As such, she works with the National Park Service to respond to America’s changing demographics and diversify the ranks of visitors and employees.

  • Wednesday, November 19, 6:00 pm – An Emerald Evening

An Emerald Evening celebrates one of the Emerald Necklace Conservancy’s founders and newly appointed Life Trustee, former Governor Michael S. Dukakis.

Michael has been a champion of parks and open space long before and continuously after his terms as Governor. As a life-long Brookline resident, he personally invests in the beauty of the Emerald Necklace by picking up trash as he walks through the park to work each day. Out of public office, he continues to advocate for the benefits of urban park land and the people who depend on their resources. He has challenged all of us to follow suit.

An Emerald Evening will be held on November 19, 2014 at 6 p.m. in the Koch Galleries of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The evening will include a lively reception and the awarding of the Olmsted Award of Excellence to our honored guest.

Visit http://www.emeraldnecklace.org/emerald-evening/ for more information, to become a sponsor or purchase tickets. All proceeds from the event will directly support the Conservancy’s programming in the Emerald Necklace park system.

  • Emerald Necklace Tree Project

The Garden Club of the Back Bay is a contributor to the Emerald Necklace Conservancy, and we thought you might be interested in knowing a bit more about where our dollars are going.

Contributions from many donors to establish the Olmsted Tree Society last year provided close to $1 million to begin the important work of assessing the condition of trees in the Emerald Necklace and planning to ensure their healthy future. Undertaken in collaboration with the Conservancy’s public partners, Boston Parks & Recreation, Brookline Parks and Open Space and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, the initiative intends to preserve heritage trees in these historic parks, some of which are more than 100 years old. In addition, the project will protect healthy trees with selective pruning and soil enhancement; plant new trees where needed in the Back Bay Fens, Riverway, Olmsted Park, Franklin Park, around Jamaica Pond and along the parkways of the Necklace. Even more important, the effort will help educate the public about the critical relationship between trees and a healthy urban environment in order to sustain ongoing support for the project.

In consultation with the Emerald Necklace Conservancy’s public partners, the Olmsted Tree Society advisors hired Kyle Zick Landscape Architects in June to lead the team of consultants who have completed the initial stages of the work. In little more than six months time, the Boston-based firm has identified and reviewed previous studies of conditions in the historic parkland; inventoried more than 7000 trees and 200 acres of woodland; developed accessible and comprehensive mapping using the latest Geographic Information System technology; and begun development of a comprehensive management plan including implementation strategies, timelines and cost estimates for the work that needs to be done.

The recommendations will be shared with the conservancy’s public partners, Boston Parks & Recreation, Brookline Parks and Open Space and the state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation and work will be coordinated through those agencies.

  • Sunday, May 18, 11:00 am – 12:30 pm – Historic Gems of the Back Bay Fens

From once foul mud flats to a recreated salt marsh to today’s gardens and park land, the Fens has undergone many transformations in the last 130 years.  Join Emerald Necklace docents as they talk and walk the landscape on Sunday, May 18, uncovering the layers of history from Olmsted’s 19th-Century sanitary improvement and H.H. Richardson structures to the 20th-Century transformations that brought gardens, memorials, and ball fields to the Fens.  What do a 17th-Century Japanese Temple Bell, a historic bridge made of Roxbury puddingstone, the oldest continually operating World War II Victory Garden in the country, and a tree once thought to be extinct have in common?  They all reside in the Back Bay Fens.  Learn about these and other historic gems on a guided walking tour that is sure to bring out the history detective in you.  Meet your guide at 11 am at the Shattuck Visitor Center, 125 The Fenway.  Free and open to the public.  Contact Jeanie Knox at jeanine@emeraldnecklace.org for more information, or call 617-522-2700.
