  • Sunday, March 3, 2:00 pm – The Garden Tourist’s New England

    Join the Groton Garden Club for a FREE Annual Lecture. The speaker is Jana Milbocker, author of The Garden Tourist’s New England. She will give a virtual tour of gardens to visit in this area.  It will be followed by a book signing of Jana’s book. The talk takes place Sunday, March 3 at 2 pm at The Groton Center, 163 West Main Street in Groton.

    Jana is a garden designer and owner of Enchanted Gardens, a landscape design and installation firm in Holliston.  She is an avid gardener, lecturer, garden designer, and author of The GardenTourists books.  She has been gardening for 30 years on a 1-1/2-acre property in Massachusetts and loves to collect new plants, visit gardens and specialty nurseries, and learn about new gardening methods.

    This free lecture is made possible by a grant from the Groton Commissioners of Trusts Lecture Fund.  The topic relates to gardening but is of general interest to all.

    Come take an armchair tour of the gardens at the Newport Mansions, Vanderbilt Estate, Vizcaya, Untermyer Gardens, Nemours, and more. The Southbridge Garden Club presents Jana Milbocker on March 21 at 6 pm at the Charlton Public Library, 40 main Street in Charlton. Jana Milbocker is the owner of Enchanted Gardens, a landscape design firm in the Boston area. She is the author of three garden travel guides, the latest being The Garden Tourist’s Florida. She is past President of the Holliston Garden Club, and an active member of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Massachusetts Horticultural Society, and GardenComm International.     Add beauty to your garden in the sweet, golden days of autumn with flowers, shrubs, trees, and vines that shine during this season. Discover plants with colorful blooms, rich foliage and dramatic seed heads, and learn strategies that will guide you in designing a vibrant fall garden.     Jana Milbocker is the principal of Enchanted Gardens, a lecturer and author. She combines horticulture, design and travel tips to educate, inspire and delight both new and seasoned gardeners. Jana loves to visit gardens and historic sites in the U.S. and abroad and to share her trips through her books, photos and blog. She published The Garden Tourist: 120 Destination Gardens and Nurseries in the Northeast in 2018, The Garden Tourist’s New England in 2020, and The Garden Tourist’s Florida in 2021. The two-acre garden surrounding her Victorian home features more than 140 varieties of trees and shrubs, perennial gardens, peony and rose beds, water features and shady retreats. Trained as a graphic designer, Jana brings years of critical design thinking, clarity and cohesiveness to her landscape solutions. Her professional experience includes 25 years as an art director and designer. Jana holds a BFA from Syracuse University, an MBA from Boston College and coursework in horticulture and landscape design.

    Garden lecturer and author Joan Butler of Enchanted Gardens reveals that our gardens can be magical places –even in winter. Stripped of summer foliage and flowers, the success of a winter garden lies in its structure, basic design, and choice of plant materials. Inspiration and tips on designing gardens for winter interest include choosing the best trees, shrubs, and perennials, and grouping them to provide interesting vignettes.

    This Andover Garden Club meeting takes place at South Church Fellowship Hall, 41 Central Street, Andover, on Thursday, January 7. Meetings begin at 10:00 AM with social time and refreshments, followed by business meeting and program, and usually conclude around noon. Unless otherwise noted, meetings are free for Andover Garden Club members; a $10 donation is requested for guests, who are encouraged to attend. Following the lecture, join the presenters Jana Milbocker and Joan Butler of Enchanted Gardens for a walk at Tower Hill to view some of the plants and plant combinations mentioned in the lecture. $15 for THBG members, $25 for nonmembers.
