    Historic New England hosts the Cogswell’s Grant Pumpkin Day at Cogswell’s Grant in Essex, Massachusetts, from 11 – 4 on Saturday, October 16.  Celebrate the arrival of fall. Enjoy horse-drawn wagon rides, choose pumpkins to decorate, compete in a pumpkin pie-eating contest, do crafts, play games, and try cider pressing. Enjoy hot mulled apple cider and homemade pumpkin pie.   • Saturday, July 17, 10 – noon – Canning and Preserving at Cogswell’s Grant: Raspberry Jelly

    Visit Essex, Massachusetts on Saturday, July 17 (date change from original post,)  from 10:00 to noon, and join Historic New England and Caroline Craig, who worked for the Little family for more than 30 years, for a lecture and demonstration on canning and preserving. In one summer at the property she put up more than 800 jars of jams, jellies and preserves. She will make the Little family’s favorite homemade preserve: raspberry jelly.  Learn about traditional preservation methods, look at the equipment used, and see some of the produce of Bert and Nina Fletcher Little’s farm. Caroline will offer advice and expertise on techniques for preserving your own garden produce and recipes for other summer fruit delicacies.  Samples will be available for tasting.  $12 for Historic New England members, and $18 for non-members.  Registration is required.  Log on to www.historicnewengland.org, or call 978-768-3632.

  • Sunday, November 15, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm – American Rhododendron Society Massachusetts Branch Founder’s Day Brunch

    The American Rhododendron Society Massachusetts Branch will hold its Annual Founder’s Day Brunch and Seed Exchange on Sunday, November 15, from 10 – 2, at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston, Massachusetts.   The American Rhododendron Society Massachusetts Chapter is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to encourage interest in and to disseminate information about the genus Rhododendron focusing on Rhododendrons compatible with the climate in New England. Members’ experience ranges from novice to expert.   • Saturday, October 24, 1 – 4 pm – Fall Family Fun

    Historic New England’s nearby Pierce House in Dorchester, Massachusetts will be the site of Fall Family Fun on Saturday, October 24, from 1 – 4 pm.  Enjoy craft activities and other hands-on opportunities connected to harvest time and the history of the Pierce House as a working farm. Families can make a leaf rubbing, design a pressed leaf card, practice spinning and weaving, and grind corn. Take a step back in time with Colonial clothing, toys, and games.   • Saturday, September 26, 11 – 4 – Family Harvest Festival

    Historic New England’s Spencer-Peirce-Little Farm in Newbury, Massachusetts will be the venue for the annual Family Harvest Festival. See tractors and other farm equipment spanning eighty years. Try corn husking or win a prize at the pie-eating contest. Learn how simple machines help farmers with pumping water, pressing cider, and preparing food. Find your way through a hay bale maze, harvest wild herbs, and see vegetables preserved in the traditional way. Enjoy a wagon ride through the fields, build scarecrows, go on a pumpkin treasure hunt, and make fall crafts. Listen to folk music performed by Sweet Loretta’s Snake Oil Jug Band or watch a puppet show by Martha Dana. The c. 1690 manor house is open. Cider, donuts, and hot lunch are available.
