Esplanade

Wednesday, August 31, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm – The Boys from Syracuse

A landmark Broadway musical from the swing era is reborn on the Esplanade on Wednesday, August 31 beginning at 7 pm. The Boys from Syracuse, based on Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors, is often considered the finest of all Rodgers and Hart creations. Familiar songs include ‘Falling in Love with Love,’ ‘Sing for Your Supper,’ and ‘This Can’t Be Love.’ This ‘concert performance with dancing’ marks only the 2nd professional performance of the inimitable big-band style original 1938 orchestrations. This Boston Landmarks Orchestra concert performance is performed in collaboration with Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, with Christopher Wilkins, conductor, Steven Maler, director, and Yo-El Cassell, choreographer. The DCR Hatch Shell is located at 47 David G. Mugar Way. Free. Rain date Thursday, September 1.

Adopt-A-Tree on the Charles River Esplanade

This holiday season create a living memory by adopting a tree in the name of someone special.

The Charles River Esplanade is the home to 1,800 trees. Throughout the year park visitors marvel at their beauty, find shelter beneath their branches, and breathe in the fresh air they help to create. With a wide array of species that range from cherry blossom to weeping willow, each tree is unique and beautiful.

This holiday season give someone a gift as special as they are by adopting a tree in their name. Adopt-A-Tree is a unique and symbolic way to show someone that you care. It connects them to the park and creates a living memory that they can enjoy for years to come.

For $1,000 you can adopt-a-tree on the Esplanade and support the pruning and maintenance that is needed to keep the tree healthy, strong, and beautiful. To acknowledge your gift The Esplanade Association will tag the tree with the name of the person that you are honoring and send them a certificate with information about the tree species, location and history.

Give the gift that keeps on giving. Adopt a tree by visiting our Adopt-A-Tree page, http://www.esplanadeassociation.org/help-the-park/adopt-a-park/adopt-a-tree/, or calling #617-227-0365.  Photo by Daniel Gerard.

Tree Removals on the Esplanade

If you have walked through the Esplanade lately you may have noticed that trees have been removed, or have been marked for removal, on either side of the Charles Circle Pedestrian Bridge. These tree removals are part of the rehabilitation of the historic and iconic Longfellow Bridge and construction of a new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant pedestrian bridge across Storrow Drive to the Esplanade.

The Esplanade Association participated in the Longfellow Bridge Task Force and lobbied for this new ADA compliant pedestrian bridge. On either side, the new Pedestrian Bridge will include new tree plantings and newly landscaped areas. If you have any questions regarding this construction work please call MassDOT at 617-519-9892, or email address, longfellowbridge@state.ma.us or contact The Esplanade Association at 617-227-0365, or email address, info@esplanadeassociation.org.  Image of proposed footbridge courtesy of Beacon Hill Times.
