  • Saturday, December 12, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm – Bark and Buds

    Participate in this indoor field study to be held at the Berkshire Botanical Garden in West Stockbridge on Saturday, December 12, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. Discover the many plants that lend bark, buds, fruit, and structural interest to the garden in fall and winter. Develop or enhance your ability to identify winter trees by twig and bud anatomy, bark features and plant architecture. Students will practice their skills with winter tree dichotomous keys. Participants should have The Illustrated Book of Trees by William Carey Grimm ISBN 0-8117-2220-1. Must be 1983 edition. Dress for limited outdoor fieldwork. Class enrollment is limited. Brad Roeller is Manager of Display Gardens at the Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, N.Y. where he oversees the Institute’s landscaping projects.   • Thursday, October 1, 10:00 am – 12:30 pm – Apples, Apples, Apples

    Spend a morning at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, Massachusetts with Betsy Williams, proprietor of The Proper Season in Andover.  Apples, one of our most ancient and useful fruits, have played important parts in fall and winter celebrations for centuries.  Learn the history of this ancient and important fruit.  Make an apple candle to decorate your seasonal table, a spicy apple pomander, fragrant mast balls, apple-cinnamon ornaments, and two quarts of spicy Autumn Apple Potpourri.  Please bring floral scissors and an apron to class – this is a messy class, so be sure to wear old clothes!  Betsy will be giving a separate class in the afternoon (Glorious Autumn Pot), so plan to have lunch at Twigs and spend the day.  Cost of the Apples, Apples, Apples program is $50 for Tower Hill members, $55 for non-members.  Register on-line at www.towerhillbg.org.

  • Thursday, September 17, 1:00 – 2:00 pm – Butterflies Abound

    Butterflies abound in Felix Neck’s garden and fields.  Join the staff of the Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary in Edgartown, Massachusetts on Thursday, September 17, from 1:00 – 2:00 pm for a guided walk to discover the butterflies of Martha’s Vineyard and the habitats that they need to survive.  Admission is free with Sanctuary admission. Felix Neck’s four miles of trails provide spectacular views of the surrounding woodlands, meadows, ponds, salt marsh, and barrier beach. In the summer and fall, enjoy watching a nesting pair of ospreys and a tree swallow colony. From the observation building, look for waterfowl in the pond during the fall and winter. Year-round, visit the Nature Center and Discovery Room to see barn owls nesting in the barn dormer through their owl cam.  For more information, email felixneck@massaudubon.org.
