    Land’s Sake, Inc. will host a free public lecture on Thursday, April 22, beginning at 7 pm at the Weston Public Library Conference Room. Come learn about the proper lawn care techniques necessary for having a beautiful and environmentally sound lawn without relying on the use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers that contribute to ground and surface water contamination. The speakers will also cover the importance of soil testing for proper turf grass growth and soil improvement practices. Discussions will be raised on other topics including seeding vs. sodding; the best time for lawn renovation and non-toxic white grub control using lawn nematodes; how beneficial insects and microbes contribute to sustainable soil fertility better than non-organic fertilizer applications and answers to the top five lawn problems most encountered by the home owner and how to correct them.   • Saturday, February 6, 10:00 – 11:00 am – Introduction to Hydroponics

    After last year’s excessive rain and crop failures caused by the pathogen late blight, it makes sense to grow vegetables in a more controlled environment. This class will cover the basics of growing vegetables using hydroponics, which is simply growing plants in a non-soil growing medium. This can be a very simple and effective way to grow vegetables which can yield amazing results.  Instructor Tom Dzaugis of Green Path Garden Supply in Northboro will cover the different growing mediums available, why pH is in important in hydroponics, the difference between fertilizers for soil and hydroponics, and lighting. We will conclude with a Q&A discussion on how to put all this information together and have success growing plants hydroponically.  The class will take place at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive in Boylston, Massachusetts, costs $6 for member of THBG, $8 for non-members, and you may register on line at www.towerhillbg.org.

  • Tuesday, September 29, 10 am – 12 noon – Evergreen and Perennial Groundcovers

    There are several ways to reduce our lawns and at the same time our reliance on fertilizers and pesticides. On September 29, using the grounds of Tower Hill Botanic Garden, Diane Pappas will show a variety of evergreen and perennial groundcovers that can be utilized in place of lawn and expensive bark mulch. The beds surrounding several gardens contain established colonies of groundcovers that demonstrate their many wonderful qualities.     This summer’s Ecological Landscaping Association Roundtable will take place Wednesday, August 12, from 2 – 4:30 pm, at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston, Massachusetts.  Panalists M.L. Altobelli, Roger Sturgis, and Michael Talbot, who together bring more than 80 years of accumulated experience to ELA’s Roundtable, will discuss Fertilizers and Soil Amendments – What Are Your Favorite Recipes?
