  • Wednesday, September 23, 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm – GCBB Fall Flower Arranging Workshop on Zoom

Wednesday, September 23, 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm – GCBB Fall Flower Arranging Workshop on Zoom

The first meeting of The Garden Club of the Back Bay’s 2020/2021 program year will be a virtual flower arranging workshop on Wednesday, September 23 from 4 – 6 pm. Join Garden Club members for a late afternoon session led by GCBB member, Nancy Cyr.  Nancy is a Senior Flower Associate at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.  She studied flower design with a number of teachers including Francoise Weeks.  She believes that flower arranging is for everyone and that, while it is fun to have access to special and unusual flowers, you can achieve beautiful effects with flowers from the grocery store and weeds picked on your walks.  At the end of the workshop, Nancy will take questions from participants.

There will be a $40 fee for flowers and vase.  To pay your $40.00 fee through the Garden Club’s website, click here:   https://bostonflora.com/shop/

Or if you prefer, pay by check (made out to the Garden Club of the Back Bay) and mail to Jolinda Taylor, 276 Marlborough Street, Boston, MA  02116. Responses and payment must be received by September 18.

Flowers/vase can be picked up on Wednesday morning, September 23 between 10 and 11 am at the parking lot of the First Lutheran Church, 299 Berkeley Street. These will be the same flowers/vase that Nancy will use for her demonstration. There is a limit of 20 people for this option. NOTE: Please wear a mask when you arrive to pick up your flowers/vase.

Floral supplies limited to 20 attendees.  Others may join the call with their own flowers and vase. There will be no charge if you are participating with your own materials, but in order to receive the Zoom link and list of recommended materials, you must email Jolinda by clicking HERE.

  • Holiday Wreaths 2014 – Where We Are This Week

Holiday Wreaths 2014 – Where We Are This Week

There are many interesting garden related events taking place in the beginning of December, but luckily, many Garden Club of the Back Bay members and friends have decided to dedicate a portion of their week to our Annual Wreath Project, taking place today, December 1 through Thursday, December 4 at The First Lutheran Church of Boston.  We’ll be decorating and delivering over 400 wreaths to friends and neighbors.  While fully decorated wreaths are only available by advance order, a simple wreath with or without one of our signature bows may be purchased on site at the Church, which is located at 299 Berkeley Street, on the corner of Berkeley Street and Marlborough Street.  Do stop by and view our operation if you are able, and put your name on our mailing list for next season.  You can choose your ribbon and walk away with a fragrant holiday treasure.

  • Garden Club of the Back Bay Wreath Making Days, Monday December 6 – Thursday December 9

For all of our fans out there, be advised we’re knee deep in pine needles over at The First Lutheran Church of Boston, 299 Berkeley Street, from today through Thursday, so if you need to find us, walk on over.  If you’ve ordered a wreath, you should have received a confirmatory postcard detailing the time of delivery, or in the case of pick up, when the wreath will be ready.  If you haven’t ordered a wreath, because, we assume, you’ve been held hostage by Somali pirates and have only just now been released, you may still walk on over to purchase a plain wreath or a wreath with a beautiful bow, but we’re afraid we cannot take any more orders for fully decorated wreaths – we are SOLD OUT! We’re just overwhelmed with the positive response from our past customers and from new customers we’ve found through our ads in the NABB Bulletin, the Back Bay Sun, the Beacon Hill Times, and the Boston Courant.  You may, however, put yourself on our mailing list for next season by either coming by, emailing info@bostonflora.com, or calling 617-859-8865 and leaving a message.

  • Garden Club of the Back Bay – Sophie’s Wreath

When member Linda Zukowski brought her granddaughter Sophie in to The First Lutheran Church of Boston to help choose ribbon for the family wreath, little Sophie immediately spotted a glittery green and red polka dot bow.  She also loves birds.  Co-President Jackie Blombach took Sophie’s wreath design very seriously, and the finished product was everything we could have wished for!

  • On Line Wreath Store Closed for 2009

Garden Club of the Back Bay volunteers are getting ready for this week’s big event, our four day wreath making marathon at The First Lutheran Church of Boston, located at 299 Berkeley Street.  We proudly announce that we have presold all the fully decorated wreaths we can create during the project days, but invite the public to stop by the Church Monday through Thursday, December 7 – 10, to see what we have made (it’s a holiday event just to walk through the courtyard and see the variety of styles) and to purchase a plain wreath or a wreath with a spectacular bow, while our supplies last.  We also thank all our loyal customers, and welcome the new ones.

  • Holiday Gift Giving Made Easy – Wreaths from The Garden Club of the Back Bay

You have one more day to check off another person on your holiday gift list – give a beautiful, hand decorated holiday wreath from The Garden Club of the Back Bay.  Your wreath can be delivered in Back Bay, Beacon Hill, the Fenway, and South End, with an elegant gift card attached, or you may pick it up yourself at The First Lutheran Church of Boston, 299 Berkeley Street, on the corner of Berkeley and Marlborough Streets, and present it to that special person in your life.  The proceeds from this sale go directly into neighborhood beautification, especially benefiting the street trees of the City of Boston.  Click here to  print the order form and fax it immediately to 617-249-1762.  Our on-line check out is currently out of service. If you prefer to telephone, call 617-859-8865.  Your wreaths will be ready for pick up or delivery on Thursday, December 10.  If you would like to be on next year’s mailing list, email info@bostonflora.com, and we’ll be happy to notify you in 2010.

  • Holiday Wreath On-Line Ordering – A Revised Method

We’ve been having some problems with our on-line wreath store – checking out is hard to do.  Since this is the final week before we begin making our beautiful holiday wreaths, we have scrambled for a solution, and have one.  You may still click on to On-Line Wreath Store on the menu above and print the order form.  Then simply fill it out and fax it to Francine Crawford at 617-249-1762.  Payment can be made directly through PayPal, www.paypal.com, if you wish.  Log in (or create an account if you don’t already have one – it’s safe and secure) and click Send Money, then fill in elisabethlay@comcast.net as the Payee.  (Your receipt will show the payment goes to The Garden Club of the Back Bay).  Put in the amount due, designate it is for Goods, and you’re all set.  Or, you may mail a check made out to The Garden Club of the Back Bay, Inc. to Francine Crawford, 421 Beacon St., Boston, MA 02115.  You may also email your order information (for instance, one fully decorated standard indoor wreath with red bow & gold accents) to info@bostonflora.com, and we’ll quickly confirm your order and get back to you with delivery or pick up information.  You may mail a check, pay with PayPal, or bring your payment with you if you are picking up your wreath at The First Lutheran Church of Boston, 299 Berkeley Street, Boston.  Thank you for your understanding and patience!

  • Don’t Forget – Time to Collect

We remind our members today that extra, interesting greens, seed pods, branches, holly, dried fruits and flowers, grasses, pine cones, and twigs in interesting shapes are all needed next week during wreath making days at The First Lutheran Church of Boston.  Below is a picture of Past President Sarah Monaco and Executive Committee Member Maureen O’Hara collecting last weekend in the Berkshires.  Please bring as much as you can to the Church, cleaned down if possible, for the decorators to use creating the beautiful wreaths, one of which is pictured below, bedecked with collected finds.

  • Holiday Wreaths from The Garden Club of the Back Bay

There is still time to purchase a fabulous holiday wreath from The Garden Club of the Back Bay.  Our loyal customer base continues to support our fund raising efforts with generous orders, and we are happy to expand our reach to new customers (that’s you!) who will enjoy our meticulously crafted one of a kind creations.  Unless you are ordering a matched pair, you won’t see your wreath coming and going on doors throughout the neighborhood (the one below was designed for a Mexican Christmas celebration).  Our buyers are not just from Back Bay, Beacon Hill and the South End, either.  We make wreaths for homes in the Berkshires, in Maine, Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, the North and South Shore, and almost every suburb within the loop of 128.  Pick up is easy – just drive over to 299 Berkeley Street, on the corner of Marlborough and Berkeley Streets, pull up in front of the large gated garden of The First Lutheran Church of Boston, and the delivery crew on duty in the garden will load your wreath right into your car.  No need to park, and we’ll have your order ready on either Wednesday or Thursday, December 9 or 10, from 8 in the morning until 7 at night – just contact us and we’ll confirm when your wreath will be ready.  You can order on line by clicking here (pay through PayPal), or you may print the order form on the page and fax it to 617-249-1762, and pay by check or cash when you pick up your order.  We can also take telephone orders (617-859-8865) until Friday, December 4.  Don’t regret not owning one of our beautiful holiday wreaths – act now!

  • Monday, December 7 – Thursday, December 10, 8:30 am – 7:00 pm – Wreath Making

Pastor Ingo R. Dutzmann and his parish will again host our Club for wreath making on the lower level of The First Lutheran Church of Boston, 299 Berkeley Street (on the corner of Berkeley and Marlborough Streets). We are very, very grateful.  The hours are as follows:

    Monday, December 7 – 8:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. (set up, training, + decoration)
    Tuesday, December 8 – 8:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. (decorating)
    Wednesday, December 9- 8:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. (decorating, delivery)
    Thursday, December 10- 8:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. (decorating, delivery, clean    up)

Please come to the side door on Berkeley Street.  We’ll post a sign.   Dried materials and fresh greens can be delivered to the Church no earlier than Monday, December 7.  Please have all decorations “cleaned down” – branches cut down, dead leaves removed – so we can contain the mess we inevitably make.  Delicate materials can be laid flat in sweater boxes or gently stacked in cardboard containers.  We are going to need as many dried items, especially flowers, as we can collect.

Bring clippers and scissors if you have them, labeled with masking tape for ease of identification.  Aprons are also a good idea.  Dress comfortably!  We need everyone’s help, whether you decorate, deliver, organize, make telephone calls confirming delivery, or sweep.  Contact Francine Crawford at 617-859-8865 (francine.crawford@verizon.net) or Margaret Pokorny at 617-536-2920 (MPok384@verizon.net) if you have specific questions.  Otherwise, we’ll see you on Monday.  If you still plan to order wreaths, send the order forms along as soon as you can.   Please try to come for as many hours as possible, on as many days as you can spare – we need you, and you’ll have a great time!  Thank you.  If you can take a delivery shift, and have not already been contacted, email Elisabeth Lay at elisabethlay@comcast.net, or call her at 617-536-6633.
