  • Wednesdays, June 12, 19, & 26, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Hands-On Floral Design

    Using flower and foliage that you might find in your own yard and garden, learn the basic techniques of floral design in this 3-part Massachusetts Horticultural Society workshop led by Barbara Rietscha, owner of Field & Vase. On the first night, you will learn the advantages of local flowers, flower selection and composition of arrangement. The second night will focus on the mechanics of arranging in different styles of vases and color composition. In the final class you will learn how to care for your floral arrangement. Sessions will be held on Wednesdays, June 12, 19, and 26 from 7 – 8:30.

    Flowers will be provided for all classes and for the first and second class. Bring your most challenging vase for the third class. Please bring a pair of clippers with you to each class. Each week, you’ll go home with a beautiful arrangement. 

    Barbara Rietscha owns and operates Field & Vase. Field & Vase is a farmer-florist business. In her designs, Barbara uses flowers and herbs grown on her cut flower farm, Stow Greenhouses, located in Stow, MA.

  • Sunday, December 17, 11:30 am – 1:00 pm – Holiday Table Runner Centerpiece

    Instructor Tina Bemis of Bemis Farms Nursery will hold a workshop on Sunday, December 17 from 11:30 – 1 at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive in Boylston, where you will create a unique centerpiece with a mix of fresh fragrant evergreens and your choice of berries, fruits, fresh flowers and other embellishments. $50 for Tower Hill members, $60 for nonmembers.   • Sunday, November 13, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – The Festive Table

    Learn how to combine fruits, vegetables and nuts with locally harvested greens, berries and candles for a creative holiday decoration.  Betsy Williams will teach this Tower Hill Botanic Garden workshop on Sunday, November 13 from 1 – 3. Take home a decorated gourd and boxwood apple candle.  All materials and handouts included in the fee of $50 for Tower Hill members, $65 for nonmembers.  Register at www.towerhillbg.org.

  • Wednesdays, January 20, 27, and February 3, 7:00 – 9:00 pm – Flower Arranging: Simple and Tasteful

    Indoor floral arrangements during the winter months are most successful when you incorporate flowers or branches that are interesting to look at. Winter is not the season to focus on bunches of blooming flowers, but rather to create airy, simple, and tasteful arrangements. In this class you will discuss  choices for long-lasting winter arrangements, the use of unusual vases, and which flowers will work best. You’ll practice a variety of floral arrangement styles, using everyday and unusual flowers and branches for tall and thin, or short and subtle looks. You will discuss equipment and reference materials used by florists, how to pair your arrangement with a room, and how to best care for your flowers before, during, and after they have been arranged. Please bring a few vases, a pair of scissors, glue sticks, and a glue gun to class. The instructor will provide the fresh flowers and branches, low-floral dishes, floral tape, and wires. A $50 materials fees is payable to the instructor at the first class.  This series of three classes, to be held Wednesday January 20, January 27, and February 3 at Brookline High School, is sponsored by Brookline Adult Education, and the fee for the three classes is $85.  You may register on line at www.brooklineadulted.org, or by calling 617-730-2700.
