Enjoy the beauty of fresh flower arrangements, inspired by works of art and created by the area’s leading floral designers, during Worcester Art Museum’s annual Flora in Winter, running from February 25 – 28. The muse for this year’s Flora programming is the Worcester Wedding Kimono, specially commissioned from Chiso, the revered 465-year-old Kyoto-based kimono house, and on view in the exhibition The Kimono in Print: 300 years of Japanese Design from February 6 – May 2, 2021.
With capacity restrictions due to COVID, we are able to accommodate only a limited number of people for Flora in Winter this year. Therefore, onsite Flora 2021 will be for WAM Members only, as a very special benefit. The Garden Club of the Back Bay is pleased to announce the next pop-up flower arranging class online with Nancy Cyr on November 19 from 11 – noon. Due to the recent surge in COVID, participants will provide their own flowers, containers, and other supplies. The class itself is free.
We will be making a long and low floral centerpiece for a dining room table. You should purchase or forage greens and buy a variety of flowers. Nancy suggests roses, alstroemerias and chrysanthemums. We will learn two methods to secure greens and flowers: one using chicken wire (available on Amazon or at Michaels) the other using bendable twigs or vines. You will need a container and waterproof floral tape. Nancy will send a list of suggested materials and links to where you can buy them once you RSVP.

This Worcester Art Museum Flora in Winter event on January 25 from 8:30 – 10 taps the expertise of floral designers Susan Dewey and Thelma Shoneman. Enter the Museum before hours (8:30 – 10) and enjoy coffee and pastry in the Café before watching Susan and Thelma as they create arrangements inspired by two suits of armor in the European Galleries. For the 39th year, garden clubs and professional designers from across New England will create artistic floral arrangements at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), for Art in Bloom.
Arrangements will be inspired by artwork found throughout the Museum, including the re-imagined Greek galleries and newly installed Arts of the Pacific Gallery, as well as the new Hokusai exhibition.
Special events include an illustrated lecture and Japanese Ikebana floral demonstrations, as well as flower arranging master classes presented by Christian Tortu, France’s most renowned floral designer.
For a preview of the arrangements, a Bubbles and Blossoms event on Friday, April 24 (6 pm-9:30 pm, $30 members, $50 non-members), celebrates spring with a festive evening of bubbly and light bites.
Sunday, April 25, is Family Day, offering a variety of family-friendly events, including live entertainment and various art-making activities.
Daily tours, elegant tea and flower-designing demonstrations will be held throughout the weekend.

Betsy Williams, a renowned gardener and herb grower, will demonstrate how to use container gardening with herbs and flowers to enhance your daily life. In this Pepperell Garden Club event on Wednesday, April 9, beginning at 7 pm at the Pepperell Senior Center, 37 Nashua Road in Pepperell, she will show us how herbs and flowers can be used in cooking, potpourri, and floral arrangements to add beauty, flavor, meaning and fragrance to seasonal celebrations. $5 fee. Priscilla Styer, Blue Ribbon and Special Award winner at the Boston Flower Show 2012, and owner of “Just for You” will guide you through a fabulous floral design program, highlighting form function and color in floral design. She will create 7 or 8 arrangements to be raffled. The program is sponsored by the Community Garden Club of Duxbury and will be held at the Duxbury Bay Maritime School, 435 Washington Street in Duxbury. CGCD members free, public $5.
On Monday, May 28 (Memorial Day) the Iris Society of Massachusetts would like to invite you to an iris show, Hats Off to Irises. Featured will be cut stalks and floral arrangements of irises. Everyone is welcome to enter irises or iris arrangements, or just come to see the wide variety of lovely irises. Iris plants will also be available for purchase. The event will take place at the Harvey Wheeler Community Center, 1276 Main Street, in West Concord, Massachusetts, it’s free, and you may find more information at www.massirises.org, or by calling 978-256-0720.

Division II – the ‘open’ division of Blooms! at the Boston Flower & Garden Show – still has some openings for floral designers. The Village Garden Club of Dennis will present the Josiah Dennis Manse Flower Show on Tuesday, August 23, from 10 – 4, at the Josiah Dennis Manse, 77 Nobscusset Road in Dennis. Visitors will enjoy an assortment of floral arrangements and horticulture displays, provided by members of the garden club. Admission is free, but donations will be gratefully accepted to benefit the club’s community initiatives.
