    Join the Massachusetts Horticultural Society on Thursday, November 17 from 1 – 3 at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street for a workshop on The Festive Table with Betsy Williams, just in time for your Thanksgiving and holiday entertaining. Betsy Williams teaches, lectures and writes about living with herbs and flowers. A life long gardener, herb grower and cook, Betsy trained as a florist in Boston and England. She combines her floral, gardening and cooking skills with an extensive knowledge of history, plant lore and seasonal celebrations. An entertaining lecturer, she weaves stories and legends throughout her informative talks and demonstrations.

    She has presented at Monticello, The American Horticultural Society’s Youth Symposium, the Pennsylvania Lavender Festival and International Herb Association as well as Colonial Williamsburg, the Ozark Folk Center and the New England, Rhode Island and Cincinnati Flower Shows. $25 for Mass Hort members, $40 for nonmembers.  Register at http://www.masshort.org/adult-education

  • Wednesday, May 21, 10:00 am – Floral Fantasy with Marie-Francoise Deprez

    The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Inc. Ruth A.   • Mondays, October 1, 15 and 22, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm – Flower Arranging with Faith Cass

    Ever wonder how to turn a bouquet of flowers or flowers from the garden into an elegant centerpiece? Learn the essential elements and principles of floral design while creating three different styles of arrangements. You will learn how to achieve long-lasting freshness and select the perfect containers and flowers for the look you want to achieve. Seasonal flowers, foliage, and themes will be emphasized. At the end of each hands-on class, you will take home an arrangement you created to enjoy or give as a gift. A materials fee of $45 (cash or check only) is payable at the first class. Limited to 10.   • Saturday, April 30 – Monday, May 2 – Art in Bloom

    Celebrate spring at this annual festival of fine art and fresh flowers on April 30–May 2! See the MFA’s galleries transformed by fifty extraordinary arrangements inspired by magnificent works of art. This year a highlight of Art in Bloom is the Art of the Americas collection, on display in its spectacular new wing.

    Art in Bloom is free with Museum admission; no reservations are required to see the floral arrangements and participate in most of the programs listed below.

    Family Day on Saturday, April 30, features storytelling, performances, and activities for children. On the evening of Sunday, May 1, there will be a special members-only viewing of the festival with dining, shopping, and spotlight tours in the galleries. On May 2 from 5 to 9 pm, the Museum throws open its doors to the greater Boston community for a free Monday evening Open House featuring entertainment, flowers, and art. Free gallery tours and floral demonstrations will be offered from Saturday through Monday, and Elegant Tea will be served on Saturday and Sunday afternoons (reservations required for Elegant Tea; call 617-369-4204).

    This year’s special events include an illustrated lecture and floral demonstration—as well as a flower arranging master class—presented by the renowned Nancy Clarke, former chief floral designer, The White House. Mrs. Clarke has created thousands of beautiful decorations and floral designs for six American Presidents and First Ladies, their families, and international dignitaries. For 30 years she designed everything from simple bud vases for the First Lady’s nightstand to elaborate, formal arrangements for state dinners. Her floral designs and holiday decorations have delighted kings and queens, heads of state, members of Congress and journalists, as well as thousands of White House visitors.   • Saturday, February 26, 9:30 am – 12:00 noon – Beyond the Traditional: Pot et Fleur Design

    Learn the elements of floral design in a fresh new way, with award winning designer Julie Lapham of Julie Lapham Designs at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, Massachusetts.  All experience levels are welcome, and all materials, including container, plant material, and mechanics, are provided.  On Saturday, February 26, from 9:30 – 12 noon, Julie will conduct a class in Pot et Fleur Design.  Create an arrangement which incorporates potted plants and cut plant material into a pleasing overall design.   • Thursday, October 7, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm – Glorious Garlic and Her Bodacious Cousins, the Alliums

    Betsy Williams, a popular speaker at garden clubs and herb festivals, will demonstrate how to grow and use garlic, how to select from the many beautiful alliums available for the garden, and how to use garlic and the “bodacious” alliums in seasonal flower decorating. The program, sponsored by the Medford Garden Club, will be held Thursday, October 7, from 7 – 9 at the Medford Public Library, 111 High Street in Medford, and is free and open to the public.  For more information, email sbcummer@msn.com.
