  • Friday, April 23 – Sunday, April 25 – Nantucket Daffodil Festival Weekend

    From early-April to mid-May, over three million daffodils of every color, shape and size will bloom on Nantucket Island. This blossoming, and the advent of spring itself, is the focal point of the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Daffodil Festival, this year taking place April 23 – 25. Originated by the late Jean MacAusland, a summer resident of Nantucket and former publisher of Gourmet Magazine, the weekend has grown into a full-scale celebration of winter’s thaw, joyous for both islanders and visitors alike. Daffodils adorn the island’s roadsides, gardens and shop windows with blossoms of yellow, orange, white and even pale pink. The Daffodil Festival’s grand event, held on Saturday (Rain or Shine) is the Annual Antique Car Parade, featuring over 100 daffodil-bedecked antique cars (pre-registration necessary for participation.) After winding through town and across the island to the charming village of Siasconset, participants join residents and visitors for the Annual Daffodil Tailgate Picnic. Held on the lush lawns leading into the village the picnic boasts fare ranging from elaborate gourmet cuisine served on fine china to box lunches and burgers. Other highlights include the Nantucket Garden Club’s Annual Daffodil Show, Daffy Dog Parade, Children’s Daffodil Parade and The Daffy Hat Pageant.For more information, log on to www.nantucketchamber.org.

  • Thursday, January 14, 6:30 – 8:30 pm – Design Workshop for Home Gardeners

    Explore principles of garden design and develop a plan for a specific area of your yard during this five session class. In this beginner-level design class, you will explore the importance of line, scale, circulation, unity, and repetition as the organizational components of a coherent garden. You’ll also consider finer details such as color, focal point, depth, layering, and connecting indoors to outdoors. Christie Dustman, designer, APLD, will use before-and-after examples of projects she has completed to illustrate the design process. You will be required to draw a base plan for your site and identify your wish list of features. In analyzing your own and your classmates’ base plans and needs, you will practice the process of design and then begin to apply principles to your site plan. Christie will then lead in-class reviews, soliciting solutions from students and suggesting her own. You will leave class with a plan in progress from which to continue your design exploration. This class is primarily about garden space, and, as such, will not include garden design, though some key plant elements may be discussed.   • Wednesday, September 2, 7 pm – “Chez Panisse Fruit” by Alice Waters

    Written by Alice Waters, one of America’s most influential chefs, “Chez Panisse Fruit” is one of a series of books which sparked a culinary movement.  Chez Panisse, one of the country’s best restaurants, became a focal point for local, conscientiously produced foods.  The restaurant spawned a collection of respected cookbooks which feature essays, beautiful illustrations, and, of course, delectable recipes.  In this class, Stir’s chefs will present a smattering of amazing sweet and savory fruit dishes using produce from Massachusetts local farms.  Enjoy simple, seasonal, rfefined cooking at its best while gathering lessons on how to shop at markets and cook seasonally.  Class is held Wednesday, September 2 at 102 Waltham Street in the South End beginning at 7 pm.  The cost of this session is $135.  Sign up by calling 617-423-7847.
