Come and be dazzled by the extraordinary nighttime creatures known as moths. Marvel at their mysterious habits, coloration, and special place in our ecology as you learn how to attract, photograph and ID moths.
Noctuid, Geometer, Sphinx ….moths always amaze. From the time of the Ancient Egyptians to today’s NPR storytellers, moths have held us spellbound with their style, colors, habits, and mysterious ways.
As part of National Moth Week, we will explore moths up close and share the data and photos we collect with researchers.
If you are interested in insects, butterflies, moths, or the wildlife of Cambridge, or if you like nature or nighttime, this event is for you. Photographers interested in creative moth portraits are especially encouraged to attend. No previous mothing experience is required! Bring your picnic and carry out and recycle your trash. The moths will thank you!
The event takes place July 24 from 7 – 9:30 at Kingsley Park at Fresh Pond Reservation. Your hosts are The Cambridge Water Department, Native Plant Community Gardeners, The Boston Birding Festival, Mystic Charles Pollinator Pathways Group, Biodiversity Builders, and Green Cambridge. Groundscapes Express has worked on many ecosystem restoration projects throughout the region. Groundscapes’ approach treats the whole site as an ecosystem or a sub-watershed for greatest success. Projects implement best practices for improved water quality, soil compaction, invasive species, and erosion control. At this Roundtable presentation on Thursday, January 19, from 1 – 3:30 pm at the Wellesley College Botanic Gardens’ Visitors Center, 106 Central Street in Wellesley,, John Engwer will describe ecosystem restoration projects at sites including Wellesley College, Kent Hospital, the Rose Kennedy Greenway, Mount Auburn Cemetery, and Fresh Pond Reservation. Though the sites differ widely, the issues of soil compaction, stormwater management, and invasive species control are common to all. Registrations are limited – call 617-436-5838, or email ela.info@comcast.net. $20 ELA or Wellesley Friends of Horticulture member price, $25 for nonmembers.
Located five miles from downtown Boston, Fresh Pond Reservation is a green oasis, an urban wild and protective watershed land covering 363 acres. Designed by the Olmsted Brothers and Charles Eliot, over the past decade this premier open space has undergone major renovation focused upon water quality protection, habitat enhancement, and aesthetic improvement. The Northeast Sector Project focused on improving a 30 acre section of the Reservation by closely integrating woodland and edge zone management with innovatively designed features such as a two acre constructed stormwater treatment wetland, butterfly meadow, community garden, soccer field, and new and improved walking paths. The project received an Honor Award for Reclamation and Restoration from the Boston Society of Landscape Architects. On Thursday, October 13, from 3 – 5, join project designer and tour guide Thomas Benjamin for an insider tour of the project’s planning and installation. The tour is sponsored by the Ecological Landscaping Association, and you may register ($20 ELA members, $25 non members) on line at www.ecolandscaping.com, or by calling 617-436-5838.
