  • Tuesday, January 28 – Thursday, January 30, 9:30 am – 3:30 pm – Drawing Succulents: Creating Plant Portraits in Graphite

    Through the observation of the unusual forms of various succulent species Carrie Megan will help you discover the sculptural structure of these unique plants. Carrie’s demonstrations and practical techniques will guide you in using a range of graphite leads, from the hardest to the softest, to create an artistic composition of your succulent specimen. This class is suitable for artists at intermediate and advance skill levels.   • Friday, March 23 – Monday, March 26, 9:30 am – 3:30 pm – Vellum Painting Inspired by Hoefnagel

    In Wellesley College Botanic Garden’s four-day course with Denise Walser-Kolar, you will take inspiration from Joris Hoefnagel’s Mira calligraphiae monumenta and create paintings of small natural collections – plants, seashells, insects, etc.  Use the first day to work on your composition, then spend the next three days painting. Learn how to create the trompe l’oeil look of stems going through the paper, how to create shadows, and how to mix colors that glow on vellum. Create a finished piece based on the works of Hoefnagel.   • Thursday and Friday, November 16 & 17, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm – Celebrating the Season: Holiday Card Workshop

    Taking your inspiration from the fruits and foliage of the holiday season, create a pen and ink painting suitable for your holiday cards, gift tags, and notepaper. Wellesley College’s Sarah Roche will lead you through the process and help you get your artwork ready for reproduction. This two day class at the Wellesley College Botanic Gardens will take place November 16 & 17 from 9:30 – 12:30, and is suitable for Techniques and experienced Foundations students.   • Thursday, November 9, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Global Flora: We’re On Our Way!

    With a focus on diversity of form, and various microhabitats in the Dry House and Wet House at the Wellesley College Botanic Gardens, Global Flora will be a unique resource for experiencing and studying botanical wonders. Botanic Gardens Director Kristina Jones will go over the details of the project and answer questions. If you have favorite flora of fabulous form, please be ready to suggest them, as the list of taxa for initial inclusion is not yet closed. The event will take place in the greenhouses on Thursday, November 9 from 10 – 12. Friends of Wellesley College Botanic Gardens free, nonmembers $10.   • Tuesday, April 26 – Thursday, April 28, 9:30 am – 3:30 pm – Painting in Sepia

    The Friends of Wellesley College Botanic Gardens has added a three day Painting in Sepia class to its excellent calendar of classes and events.  Lara Call Gastinger will give a detailed approach to observing and painting spring specimens with a monochromatic sepia palette.  You’ll learn how to render stems accurately, create value, detail different textures, and use brush control to attain a tight finished look.  This is a great introduction to watercolor without the added complexity of color.  The class takes place Tuesday, April 26 – Thursday, April 28, from 9:30 – 3:30.  Friends members $340, nonmembers $415.   • Tuesday, April 28, 4:15 pm – Growing Behind Prison Walls

    Wellesley Research Technician Mia Howard and Lab Instructor Marcy Thomas are volunteers in the newly created Horticulture Program at the Framingham Women’s Correctional Facility, where the mission of “Women Helping Women” is advanced through a shared goal to have inmates learn new skills and grow food to donate to women’s shelters.  Come to the Wellesley College Botanic Garden on Tuesday, April 28 at 4:15 and hear about Mia and Marcy’s experiences working alongside women prisoners, helping with the planting and transplanting, and contributing to the program’s growth.  Free for members of WCBG, nommembers $10.  Register by calling 781-283-3094, or email wcbgfriends@wellesley.edu.

    In this Friends of Wellesley Botanic Garden workshop on Thursday, April 23, from 9:30 – 3:30 with Suzanne Lee, create a book great for a diary, recipe book, special memories, or travel journal.  Choose to also make a small notepad or sketchbook holder.  Use hand-made papers, beautiful combinations of natural dried leaves, fabric collage, or combinations of old sketches and paintings.  Use tiny sketches or natural scraps you’ve collected, if you wish, but the workshop includes all materials for either project.  No previous experience needed.  Friends: $85, nonmembers $100.  Register by calling 781-283-3094 or email wcbgfriends@wellesley.edu.
