  • Sunday, June 29, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm, and Wednesday, July 9, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm – Transcendental Abstractions

Meet Fruitlands Museum’s Artist-in-Residence Richard Kattman and tour his new exhibit of abstract paintings.  Some of Richard’s works are inspired by natural elements—sea, wind, sand, grass, sky, flowers, fields, woods, gardens and night stars. Some canvases are his views of the earth as it appears from space. Some are drawn from infinite places located within his subconscious. Others are explorations he takes at the speed of light to places he imagines in deep outer space. These artworks portray the fragility of life and the known universe. The exhibit will run through August 10.

On Sunday, June 29, from 2 – 4, Richard will give a formal presentation and demonstration on abstract painting, free with museum admission.  On Wednesday, July 9, from 10 – 3, attend an Abstract Landscape Painting class.  This one day plein air workshop will cover the steps of capturing the essentials of the Fruitlands landscape in acrylics on canvas.  All skill levels are welcome.  Registration required.  Email Melissa at mkershaw@fruitlands.org.  Museum members $100, nonmembers $110.

  • Fruitlands Museum – Bricks, Benches and Blacktop

In 2014, Fruitlands Museum would like to improve physical accessibility on site by focusing on the “3 Bs” – Bricks, Benches, and Blacktop. The goal is to make it easier for all guests to navigate and enjoy the campus.

This initiative will allow the Museum to:

Reinstall the brick walkway that leads into the Museum store and cafe.
Offer more places to rest on campus by purchasing new benches.
Repave the blacktop from the entryway down to the Farmhouse.

Yes, these are big projects – which is why they are asking for your help today. The 3 “Bs” are part of a larger facilities improvement plan which they hope to have complete by the end of 2015.

The first project is the brick walkway. They are halfway to their fundraising goal of $10,000 and hope to complete this challenge by the end of October.

Can you help? Donate now to invest in the future of your museum community!

  • Sunday, September 16, 1:00 pm – The Transcendental Landscape Art Panel and Discussion

Host Dr. Michael Volmer, Curator, Fruitlands Museum, and Moderator Bill Turville, Artist and Personality Vivant, will speak on The Transcendental Landscape on Sunday, September 16 at Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, Massachusetts. The program will begin at 1pm with a reception to follow.

Panelists will share images of their work and discuss the relationship between landscape and their visual vocabulary. Each of the panelist was invited because of their unique approach to responding to – or documenting – or transforming – a sense of place. Fruitlands Museum is an ideal location for such a panel discussion. The sacred vista, the collected art and artifacts, and the public will all contribute to the value of this discussion.

How does a place contribute to the creative process?

How can art contribute to a sense of belonging?

How does art document a landscape?

How does the natural experience change the artist and/or art studio practice?  For more information visit www.fruitlands.org.
