    Plants need their seeds to move around so they can propagate the next generation. In this New England Wild Flower session on Sunday, January 20 from 10 – noon at Nasami Farm in Whately, participants learn how plants have adapted a variety of ways to disperse their seeds. After a lecture on seed and fruit structures, the class studies examples of some of the adaptations using hand lenses and microscopes.   • Tuesday, January 6 – Thursday, January 8, 9:30 am – 3:30 pm – Drawing the Market: Fruits and Veggies in Graphite

    Explore creative ways to arrange the abundance of produce contained in grocery store aisles to make intriguing compositions of fruit, berries, and foliage.  Focus on graphite techniques under the guidance of Carol Ann Morley at the Wellesley College Botanic Garden in a three day class to be held Tuesday, January 6 – Thursday, January 8, from 9:30 – 3:30 (snow date Friday, January 9.)  Discover how to analyze shapes and negative spaces to create three dimensional forms and bring your art to life.  This is a workshop suitable for all levels.  WCBG members $250, nonmembers $300.  Register by calling 781-283-3094, or email wcbgfriends@wellesley.edu.     You’ve taken the graphite course, now explore color with Carol Ann Morley at the Wellesley College Botanic Garden on Tuesday, January 13 – Thursday, January 15 from 9:30 – 3:30 (snow date Friday, January 16.)  Learn to capture the vibrant colors of fruits and vegetables.   • Wednesday – Friday, March 20 – 22, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Botanical Illustration with Graphite Pencil: Fruits and Seeds

    Draw the beauty of seeds, including pods, nuts, fruits and cones, and investigate the amazing variety of nature’s bounty. Discover the features and texture of these objects while building your drawing skills. This is a great Berkshire Botanical Garden class for beginners or more advanced students who get ‘stuck’ drawing. Learn to solve this problem and develop your drawing step by step, from sketch to finished nature drawing. There will be exercises in: training the eye through quick sketching; drawing plants in proportion; the essentials of perspective; and applying tonal values for visual depth. Whether your love is quick field sketching or rendering plant portraits, this inspiring class will give you confidence to draw and train you to look at nature more closely.

    Carol Ann Morley is an illustrator and dedicated teacher of botanical illustration working in Dover, NH. She founded the Botanical Art Illustration Certificate Program at the New York Botanical Garden and teaches illustration there and for other botanical gardens. The classes take place Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, March 20, 21, and 22, from 10 – 4, and cost $260 for BBG members, $290 for nonmembers.  Sign up at www.berkshirebotanical.org.

  • Don’t Forget – Time to Collect

    We remind our members today that extra, interesting greens, seed pods, branches, holly, dried fruits and flowers, grasses, pine cones, and twigs in interesting shapes are all needed next week during wreath making days at The First Lutheran Church of Boston.  Below is a picture of Past President Sarah Monaco and Executive Committee Member Maureen O’Hara collecting last weekend in the Berkshires.  Please bring as much as you can to the Church, cleaned down if possible, for the decorators to use creating the beautiful wreaths, one of which is pictured below, bedecked with collected finds.

  • Saturday, October 17, 10:00 am – Eden’s Gems: A Walk in the Village Orchard

    Garden Thyme programs are held on the third Saturday of each month and are FREE for members of Old Sturbridge Village. Led by Village horticultural and agricultural staff, these programs and workshops are held at various sites and deal with a variety of plant-related themes and topics. Participants gather at the Visitor Center at 10 a.m. each month and are led to the appropriate site or setting.  On October 17, enjoy Eden’s Gems: A Walk in the Village Orchard, with Christie Higginbottom. Did you ever wonder why 1800s cooks and cider makers had over 800 apple varieties to choose from and we only have a dozen or so? Meet the Village’s historic fruits — the Mothers, the Spitzenburgs, the Russets, the Baldwins and the Sheepsnose apples. Learn about seedlings, scions and rootstocks.   • Wednesdays, October 7 & 14, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm – Introduction to Home Orcharding

    With careful planning, home orcharding can be a low-maintenance means to grow lots of nutritious food in small and challenging spaces. This class would be useful to anyone who has a little space and wants to grow fruit, including pomes, stone fruits, berries and nuts. The class covers the process of planning, planting, and caring for a home orchard. The beginner home orchardist will receive a step-by-step guide to evaluating your space, selecting the right plant and nursery, developing a maintenance plan, and an introduction to reference materials.  The class will take place on two successive Wednesdays, October 7 and 14, from 6 pm to 9 pm at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston, Massachusetts, and will be taught by Benjamin Crouch, proprietor of Land of Plenty Organic Landscaping.  Cost is $45 for Tower Hill members, $50 for non-members.  To register, log on to www.towerhillbg.org.  Last day of registration is September 30.

    Rides, games, live music, livestock, competitions, craft demonstrations, food, shopping, art show, and awards for homegrown vegetables, fruits, flowers and homemade goodies. And of course, the ever popular dog show. There’s truly something for everybody.
