    Tower Hill Botanic Garden presents its annual Gardeners’ Emporium on Saturday, September 10 from 10 – 2. The Emporium will feature nonprofit, regional plant societies, specialty nurseries, and purveyors of distinctive garden ornaments. Societies represented include the Begonia, Cactus & Succulent, Daylily, Gesneriad, Hosta, and Rock Garden. This is the ONLY place this fall where you can find all these Societies, with the diversity of their respective offerings, gathered in one sale. Each of these groups offer expertise on their plant specialties, as well as hard-to-find specimen plants for sale. In addition, niche nurseries and garden accessory companies will offer their unique products for sale. Participating nurseries, as of the time of this posting, include Broken Arrow, DeRosa Orchids, Greystone Gardens, Pope’s Pots, Stonegate Farm, and more. Finally, Tower Hill’s Gift Shop will provide all kinds of unique gardening supplies and books, and Twigs Cafe will offer delightful meals.
    Fall is an excellent time for planting, and the Gardeners’ Emporium is a perfect opportunity to find just the right plant, or garden statue, to fill in an empty spot in the garden. The cooler days of September and October give new plants a chance to establish themselves before the onset of winter. September is also a great time to visit Tower Hill, as many of the annuals and perennials are still putting on a fantastic show.   • Saturday, August 7, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Massachusetts Marketplace Festival

    Join the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for the Annual Massachusetts Marketplace Festival on Saturday, August 7, from 10 to 4, at Elm Bank Horticulture Center.  The event will feature the finest products from the region’s fields, farms, gardens and kitchens, with over 60 vendors offering new and locally produced food products, crafts, garden ornaments and gifts.  There will also be a plant sale and garden tours.  Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for MassHort members, and $2 for children under 12.  Tickets are available on site the day of the event.  Massachusetts Marketplace Festival is produced by MassHort with in-kind support from the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources and the Massachusetts Specialty Food Association.  For more information, log on to www.masshort.org, or call  617-933-4981.

  • Friday, September 25, 5:30 pm – Sculpture Show Preview Party

    The famed “Stone Show” formerly in Hardwick, Massachusetts, is expanding and moving to Tower Hill Botanic Garden to become “The Sculpture Show.” The show will be larger and more inclusive in every way, with contributions from more than a dozen skilled artists from throughout New England and New York. See stunning works in metal, wood, cast stone and carved stone, set amongst the incomparable beauty of Tower Hill’s exquisite gardens and woodland trails—especially breathtaking during the fall foliage season. The preview party and reception with the artists will be on Friday, September 25, beginning at 5:30pm. Buy Sculpture Show Preview Party tickets. $25 for Tower Hill Members, $30 for non members. Enjoy delicious hors d’oeuvre and a cash bar, and enjoy a guided tour of the show, as the lights are turned on for the first time to illuminate the sculptures for a spectacular effect. We’ll inform you about special related programming throughout this event. The show is co-sponsored by New England Garden Ornaments of Sudbury, Massachusetts, and by Shadows and Light, of Conway, Massachusetts.  The show continues and will be open through November 1, from 10 am – 5 pm, and open Wednesday evenings until 8 pm.

  • Wednesday, June 24, 4 – 5:30 pm – Propagation by Cuttings Workshop

    From 1916 to 1979, Long Hill was the summer home of noted author and editor of The Atlantic Monthly, Ellery Sedgwick, and his first wife, Mabel Cabot Sedgwick, an accomplished horticulturist, gardener, and author of The Garden Month by Month. The Federal-style house was completed in 1925 and contains original woodwork from the ca.1812 Isaac Ball House in Charleston, South Carolina.

    Mrs. Sedgwick designed and planted the original gardens. After her death in 1937, Mr. Sedgwick’s second wife, the former Marjorie Russell, herself a distinguished gardener and propagator of rare plants, added many plants to the gardens, including unusual species and varieties of trees and shrubs, some introduced by the Arnold Arboretum.

    Today the gardens reflect the collective interests and tastes of both women. Five acres of cultivated grounds are laid out in a series of separate garden “rooms” surrounding the house. Each area is distinct in its own way and is accented by garden ornaments, structures, and statuary. The gardens are flanked on all sides by more than 100 acres of woodland as well as an apple orchard, meadow, and agricultural fields.

    Grow Long Hill’s signature plants from your own cuttings. Experienced propagators demonstrate setting up a propagation box, caring for your cuttings, and transplanting rooted plants.
