  • Wednesday, November 18, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – The Homemade Kitchen: Recipes for Cooking with Pleasure

    How do we help our children become more confident, able, and independent in the kitchen? Join Alana Chernila for an evening of exciting ideas, strategies, and simple ways to empower kids in the kitchen. This night in the Parkman Room of the Elm Bank Education Building at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, 900 Washington Street, Wellesley, will be useful for parents, caregivers, and educators of children of all ages.

    Alana Chernila writes, cooks, sells fresh vegetables, and teaches cheese making. She is a graduate of St. John’s College in Santa Fe and lives with her husband and two young daughters in western Massachusetts. Her first cookbook, The Homemade Pantry: 101 Foods You Can Stop Buying & Start Making, was published by Clarkson Potter in Spring 2012.   • Thursday, November 5, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Concocting Cordials

    The winter months are the perfect time to make festive and warming cordial drinks. So come spice up your holidays and learn how to create delicious herbal-infused alcoholic beverages — they make a delightful treat to sip by the fire, or to give as gifts.

    It’s much easier than you think, and you can be as creative as you wish! At Elm Bank on Thursday, November 5 from 7 – 8:30 we will sample several examples of herbal wines and cordials and each participant will create his/her own in class to go home with.

    Steph Zabel is an herbalist and educator based in Somerville, MA. For over a decade she has combined her passions for natural medicine, community outreach, and education. She holds a Masters degree in ethnobotany, and is a graduate of several herbal apprenticeships including a three-year training in clinical herbalism. Steph began her professional career working in the botanical collections of the Harvard University Herbaria. Her current work focuses on teaching practical & inspiring herbal classes and offering dynamic wellness sessions. Steph is also the founder of HERBSTALK, Boston’s vibrant community herbal conference, through which she creates accessible educational opportunities for all plant enthusiasts.

  • Sunday, September 20, 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Fall Harvest Festival Dinner

    Come and celebrate all that is local and abundant! Join us for an evening celebrating the fall harvest and building community in the Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley. Showcasing the best of local agriculture and seasonal heirloom foods, come share a place at our tables enjoying fine open-air dining, hand-crafted beverages, and music and dancing under the goddesses in the Maple Grove. Twilight tours of the gardens will lead to us to gather together for a festive seated dinner culminating in a magical illuminated candle labyrinth.

    This event supports the Garden to Table program strives to build strong local food systems from the seeds planted to the food grown and harvested and shared within the community. We work to offer high caliber education in horticulture, nutrition, and food production and preparation both in schools and in the Seed to Table and Garden to Table education spaces in the Gardens at Elm Bank. The Massachusetts Horticultural Society also works to raise awareness of food accessibility issues within local, greater Boston, and regional communities.

  • Saturday, July 11, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Plan to Harvest: Vegetable Gardening

    Massachusetts Horticultural Society Garden Keeper Susan Hammond will show you how your plan from seed catalogs grows into a producing vegetable garden. She will discuss the unique varieties growing in our educational garden, the techniques used to increase yields, and give you firsthand experience troubleshooting common garden problems. We’ll discuss late season planting, maintenance and harvest. And assess how all that snow affected our gardens. Come with questions!

    The first part of this Saturday, July 11 program (10 – noon) will be held in the Elm Bank Education Building, and the program will end in the Garden to Table Vegetable Garden.

    Susan Hammond is a Lifetime Master Gardener with the Massachusetts Master Gardener Association. She’s been gardening since childhood, with a special focus on edible plants. She is responsible for the Mass Hort’s 6,000 square foot Garden to Table Vegetable Garden, where she enjoys teaching visitors and volunteers about vegetable gardening.     Living in an apartment? Have no yard? Downsizing? Attend this Massachusetts Horticultural Society lecture on Thursday, May 28 from 7 – 8:30 in the Parkman Room of Elm Bank Education Building, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, to gain tips and tricks on how to grow your own garden in small spaces even if you have no soil to call your own.

    Gretel Anspach is a Trustee of Mass Hort, a Lifetime Master Gardener, Education Coordinator and past president of the Massachusetts Master Gardener Association and a retired systems engineer for Raytheon.   • Thursday, March 13, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Seed Starting Indoors

    Get a jump on the season by starting your plants from seeds—it’s cheaper than buying transplants, offers a much broader variety of plants, and can be quite addictive. On Thursday, March 13, beginning at 7 pm at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street, Wellesley, Gretel Anspach will discuss seed choices, what to start and when to start it as well as growing methods including windowsill versus grow light gardening. Whether you are interested in annuals, perennials, edibles, or even shrubs and trees, this lecture will give you the information you need to go from starting a seed to planting in the ground.

    Whole Foods Market in Wellesley has teamed up with Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s Garden to Table program to bring you cooking classes throughout the fall and winter! Healthy Eating Specialist Lisa Caldwell, director of the Our Health Starts Here Program at Whole Foods Market in Wellesley, will help you make healthy choices in cooking, eating, and menu planning.  Classes will be held at Whole Foods Market in Wellesley.

    Squash – Why? Well, why not?! They store really well throughout the winter and are so versatile! Come join us and find out all the wonderful things one can do with squash… maybe we will even make dessert with them!

  • Friday, September 21, 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm – Ancient Grains for Modern Meals – A Book Discussion

    Veteran journalist and food writer Maria Speck is the author of Ancient Grains for Modern Meals (Ten Speed Press), her first cookbook. It recently received the coveted Julia Child Award and award in the Health and Special Diet category from the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP). Maria’s book previously also won a Gourmand Award as the US selection, Mediterranean category. The cookbook contains 100 Mediterranean-inspired whole grain recipes-from amaranth to wheat berries. Both the New York Times and the Washington Post selected Ancient Grains as one of the top cookbooks for 2011, and Cooking Light magazine named it one of the 100 best cookbooks of the past 25 years. Raised in Greece and Germany, Maria has a lifelong passion for the flavors and textures of whole grains. She has contributed to Gourmet, Saveur and Gastronomica.

  • Wednesday, September 12, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Blue Ginger Cocktail Party

    The Massachusetts Horticultural Society has selected chef Ming Tsai’s Blue Ginger as a premier restaurant partner for its Garden to Table initiative. Staff and volunteers have planted a raised bed garden at Elm Bank with a variety of herbs and Asian greens which will supply a portion of the restaurant’s local produce needs during the harvest season. Blue Ginger will celebrate the program by hosting a cocktail party, with a menu designed around produce from the garden with all proceeds going to Massachusetts Horticultural Society.
