    Join award-winning herbalist Holly Bellebuono on October 16 at 10:45 at The Gardens at Elm Bank in Wellesley to learn about the deadliest epidemic in human history and to discover how plants played a role in people’s attempts at a cure. The history of the Plague opens fascinating windows into the human spirit and gives special glimpses of the perceptions—and uses—of the natural world.   • Wednesdays, October 30, November 6, 13, & 20, and December 4 & 11 – Leaves 101: Foundations of Botanical Drawing & Painting

    Through demonstrations and tutorials, celebrate the colors of seasonal leaves while learning how to realistically depict your subject matter in pencil, and then in watercolor, with Sarah Roche, on six Wednesdays, October 30 – November 20, plus December 4 & 11,  from 9:30 – 1:30 at the Putnam classroom at The Gardens at Elm Bank.     Join Donna Lane, past president of the New England and Rhode Island dahlia societies, for an informational workshop on September 5 at the Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, where you will learn the ins and outs of dahlia care and take a guided tour of the garden’s dahlia collection.

    Thursday, August 15, 5:00 pm – 7:30 pm – Arts on the Green

    On Thursday, August 15 from 5 – 7:30, wander The Gardens at Elm Bank, enjoy live music, and stroll through an Art Walk. Support local artists showcasing and selling their work throughout the grounds. There will be family art activities and garden tours, too. Free to all.   • Tuesday, August 13, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm – Eco Printing: Botanical Prints on Dyed Fabric

    Record your visit to Mass Hort by printing our plants on fabric. Learn how to combine eco printing with natural and synthetic dyes to create amazing botanical images. In this August 13 class at The Gardens at Elm Bank, you will first dye fabric (a few small samples as well as two silk scarves) with natural dyes. Then you will create a few eco prints by placing leaves and flowers directly on fabric and steaming them to collect images from the plants. Finally, you will combine the two techniques by taking naturally dyed fabric, arranging plants on it, and then covering it with another a different color of dye. The results will amaze and delight you. The class will be from 9 – 3, and is $140 for Mass Hort members, $200 general admission. Register at www.masshort.org.

    Mary DeLano is a fiber explorer who loves eco printing, natural dying, stitching, wool applique, and rug making. Mary enjoys sharing her passion for fiber arts with new students.  She teaches throughout New England, including at Maine Fiber College, where she also serves on the organizing committee.

    Walk through the Gardens at Elm Bank on July 18 at 7 pm with David Fiske, Mass Hort’s Garden Curator. He will point out unique specimens such as the early perennials and woody plants. He’ll show you how to identify plants and understand their growing conditions. $5 for Mass Hort members, $15 for nonmembers. Register at www.masshort.org.

    Come enjoy family activities in the Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, that will help kids learn about the importance of pollinators! Games, crafts and activities will explore the world of butterflies, bees, hummingbirds and more. Presentations to help all ages to find ways to support pollinators with our gardening choices.  Bring a picnic to enjoy a special day at The Gardens at Elm Bank!

    On March 7 at 7 pm at The Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, Garden Speaker Cheryl Monroe will cover important topics of the season such as: what to prune now and why, tool sharpening (demonstration and bring yours too!), flower bed cleanup and evaluation, transplanting, lawn care, pest control (voles, winter moth, and scale), houseplant basics, bulb care, and bare root plants.

  • Thursday, February 28, 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Dripped Wax Resist with Watercolor

    On February 28 from noon – 4 at The Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, explore the exciting possibilities of combining melted wax with watercolor. Instructor Nan Rumpf show you how to drip and draw gestural lines with liquefied beeswax. Then she will demonstrate how to develop your artwork with watercolor glazes. The wax dries quickly to offers a graceful resist for your watercolors, combining an important textural element with a fluid medium. The beeswax and the specialized melted beeswax tools will be provided by the instructor.

    Nan Rumpf grew up in a small Iowa town on the banks of the Mississippi River, where she spent much of her childhood exploring the outdoors on her bicycle and daydreaming under a lilac bush. She graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.A. She currently lives in Wellesley, Massachusetts. She has worked as a professional puppeteer, designing and constructing her own puppets and masks. She organized dramatic arts workshops in public schools and libraries for twenty years.

  • Tuesday, February 19, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm – Family Owl Walk: Not All Owls Say Whooo!

    Even in the midst of winter, animals and birds are out and about; owls play an important part of the ecosystem.

    With puppets and activities, garden educator Kathi Gariepy will teach families about the habits and sounds of the owls of New England and then lead a walk outside to look for some of these nocturnal creatures. The event takes place at The Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, on February 19 from 6:30 – 8, and is $10 for adult Mass Hort members, $15 general public, children under 12 free.  Snowy owl image from www.massaudubon.org.
