  • Wednesday, October 7, 11 am – Ocean Drive Revisited: A Re-Evaluation of its National Importance

    Join the Preservation Society of Newport County on Wednesday, October 7 at 11 a.m. at Rosecliff, 548 Bellevue Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island for a lecture by Mack Woodward, Senior Architectural Historian of the Rhode Island  Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission.

    Ocean Drive is one of the most significant picturesque landscapes in America.  Recent research has revealed just how important this historic place is in our nation’s landscape history.  This lecture will focus on the layout of the Drive itself, the masterful development of the entire district in the late 19th century, its comparison with similar picturesque sites, and how critics of the time responded to the planning of the area.

  • Wednesday, October 7, 1 pm – 2:30 pm – Workshop: Flower Arranging

    If you are a member of the Museum of Fine Arts (and we hope all our Garden Club members will consider joining if not already a member), drop in to the Riley Seminar Room on Wednesday, October 7, between 1 pm and 2:30, and get fresh ideas on how to realize the fine art of floral arranging.  Members of the MFA’s acclaimed flower team (again, some of our own members are counted among these talented designers) will share tips and an abundance of creative ideas.  The event is free, open on a first-come, first-served basis.  Accompanying guests are admitted subject to the general admission privileges of your membership.  Please have your MFA membership card available for check-in.  For more information, log on to www.mfa.org.

  • Saturday, August 22 – Creating Home Outside with Julie Moir Messervy

    Creating Home Outside is an informative workshop including lecture, illustrative photographs, lively discussion and opportunities to practice Julie’s unique design principles. Messervy explains how and why good design works so that we may better refine our properties to meet our needs, as well as fulfill our longing for beautiful and meaningful places. Her lecture is based on a series of six steps that can be followed successfully by homeowners, gardeners and landscape professionals alike, to achieve cohesive and personally pleasing landscapes. Julie takes participants through an understandable process that yields clear and satisfying results. Spend a refreshing day renewing your sense of discovery for the landscape environment; learn how to strengthen the link between indoors and out; and evaluate your client’s needs and preferences to help them achieve a personal landscape that is uniquely their own. At the end of this exciting day, you’ll realize that you know enough to complete a conceptual design for yourself or a client.   • Wednesday, August 12, 2 – 4:30 pm – Fertilizers and Soil Amendments – What Are Your Favorite Recipes?

    This summer’s Ecological Landscaping Association Roundtable will take place Wednesday, August 12, from 2 – 4:30 pm, at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston, Massachusetts.  Panalists M.L. Altobelli, Roger Sturgis, and Michael Talbot, who together bring more than 80 years of accumulated experience to ELA’s Roundtable, will discuss Fertilizers and Soil Amendments – What Are Your Favorite Recipes?   • Tuesday, July 14, 4 – 8 pm – Children’s Party at Green Animals Topiary Garden

    Children and adults of all ages are invited to join the festivities at the Preservation Society of Newport County’s annual Children’s Party at Green Animals Topiary Garden, 380 Cory’s Lane, Portsmouth, Rhode Island. The party will feature circus acts, music, magic, clowns, puppets, pony rides, kiddie rides, refreshments and much more on this historic seven acre estate overlooking Narragansett Bay.  No reservations required, and tickets are sold at the door only.     By adding a progression and variety of easy-to-grow, nectar-rich flowers to your home garden, you can ensure a season-long treat in the form of visiting butterflies. Suzanne Mahler, one of the Garden Club of the Back Bay’s former speakers, is an expert in the subject and she’ll show you how mass plantings of colorful flowers, particularly those tinted pink and lavender, are irresistible to butterflies passing overhead.
