    In partnership with Boston Parks & Recreation, the Gibson House Museum will be hosting a Promenade in the Public Garden to celebrate Boston’s Victorian history. Dress up in your Victorian-inspired finest and experience firsthand the Boston elite practice of parading around to be seen. Enjoy a formal promenade with costume contest at the Public Garden, then walk to the nearby Gibson House Museum for an open house featuring a special exhibition : It’s About That Walk: Victorian Promenade Culture and Costume. The program is supported in part by a grant from the Boston Cultural Council. Free, but reserve a spot through Eventbrite HERE.

    The Gibson House Museum and Etiquetteer Robert B. Dimmick will once again host a glittering evening celebrating the repeal of Prohibition.     Join us for a self-guided tour and specialty costume exhibition featuring  Victorian fashions that highlight the honored tradition of our local  “Promenade,” a leisurely walk in the Public Garden. Make sure to visit our Victorian-themed photo booth and take your own photo in the elegant setting of the Gibson House. Finish your visit by  enjoying a self-serve buffet of tea and sweets.

    Come celebrate with The Gibson House Museum as we commemorate the 150th birthday of Gibson House Museum founder Charlie Gibson.   • Saturday, October 19, 4:30 pm, 5:30 pm, 6:30 pm, and 7:30 pm – Whispers from the Veil: A Victorian Séance Experience

    Join The Gibson House Museum on Beacon Street on October 19 for a séance reenactment exploring the history of spiritualism and guided by renowned Boston medium Mina “Margery” Crandon (1888-1941), as portrayed by actress Laura Rocklyn. Crandon’s séances captivated audiences, sparking controversial and heated debates about the existence of paranormal abilities. This hour-long journey delves into the world of Harry Houdini, the legendary escape artist and illusionist who dedicated his life to exposing fraudulent mediums, and the dual persona of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, acclaimed author of Sherlock Holmes and a staunch advocate for spiritualism. As you tour the Gibson House Museum, you’ll experience the rituals and practices that intrigued and confounded Crandon, Houdini, and Doyle, unravelling the intertwined lives and beliefs of these three extraordinary individuals.   • Tuesday, February 6, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm Eastern – Health & Medicine in 19th Century Boston: The Development of Anatomy & Pathology Collections, Online

    In the second of The Gibson House Museum’s winter virtual lecture series, mark your calendar for February 6 at 6 pm for The Development of Anatomy & Pathology Collections in 19th Century Boston. Dr. John Collins Warren (1778-1856), grandfather of Rosamond Warren Gibson, pioneered the use of anesthesia in surgery and cofounded Massachusetts General Hospital in 1811. He also donated the collection that became the basis for Harvard Medical School’s Warren Anatomical Museum. Boston Brahmins like Dr. Warren played a major role both in the development of anatomical collections and the ways these collections influenced medical knowledge and practice. Join Warren Anatomical Museum Curator Dominic Hall as he discusses these collections, their development, and their continued relevance. $10. Register HERE.

  • Tuesday, January 16, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm, Eastern – Health & Medicine in 19th Century Boston: Medicine for Women, Medicine by Women, The Founding of Boston’s Vincent Memorial Hospital

    Join The Gibson House Museum for a three-part virtual lecture series investigating the fascinating world of 19th-century health care and its connections to the Gibson family. From hospitals run by and created for women, to medical collections and knowledge, to mental health and addiction, the Gibson family’s story is a window into how Bostonians experienced health care over the course of the century. Bonus: Each ticket comes with a 25% discount code for an “At Home with the Gibsons” tour! The first lecture will take place on January 16 from 6 – 7 pm. In 1891, Vincent Memorial Hospital was founded to care for working-class women; the early medical staff was comprised exclusively of women doctors. The Vincent Club was founded shortly thereafter, in part by the women of the Gibson family, in order to support the work of the hospital. Join Vincent Memorial Hospital Foundation historian William Baker, Jr. and the Gibson House’s Sarah Hagglund to explore this fascinating time in Boston’s medical history and the various roles women had in creating, staffing, and supporting women’s health care. $10.   • Thursday, April 11, 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm – 27th Annual Gibson House Museum Benefit: Save the Date

    The Gibson House Museum will hold its 27th Annual Benefit at the historic St. Botolph Club on April 11, 2024. The Museum’s primary fundraising event, the Benefit raises funds critical to maintaining the house and its collections and providing public educational programming.

    Our 2024 Benefit theme will be “The Sporting Life,” with a nod to the Gibsons and other nineteenth-/early-twentieth-century families who spent much of their leisure time enjoying outdoor activities. 

    Our honoree will be Boston’s Community Boating, the oldest public sailing organization in the country, for its mission of breaking down the physical, social, and financial hurdles that sailing frequently presents and providing opportunities for people of all backgrounds and abilities to experience the joys of being on the water.
