    The Boston Center for Adult Education has assembled a spectacularly seaworthy crew to steer the course for a lively down-to-earth conversation on Tuesday, January 5, from 6 – 8, about the state of the fishing industry in New England and beyond. Dave Marciano, Captain of the FV Hard Merchandise, was just another salty fisherman from Gloucester trying to feed the world until the National Geographic Channel show Wicked Tuna made a him a reality television star. Jim Turner, of Turner’s Seafood, has spent a lifetime dedicated to the business of fish. Join Billy Costa, co-host of NESN’s Dining Playbook as he leads a deep dive into the passions that drive these men and the work that they were born to do. It’s going to be wicked awesome! A reception will follow, hosted by Turner’s Seafood, and featuring delicious bites of the freshest, best-tasting, locally sourced seafood in New England.   • Sunday, July 31, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Greenbelt’s Wild Edibles Walk

    You know we love Russ Cohen.  On Sunday, July 31, Russ will join Greenbelt for a Wild Edibles Walk on the Tompson Reservation on Tompson Street in Gloucester.  The mixed habitat of this beautiful property is great for mushrooms and other wild edibles.  Registration is required, by emailing smd@ecga.org.  The event, however, is free.  Photo by Nathan Siemers at www.fiveprime.org.

  • Friday, April 22, 7:30 pm – Mother Nature’s Child

    A screening of Mother Nature’s Child: Growing Outdoors in the Media Age, will take place Friday, April 22 at 7:30 at the Cape Ann Community Cinema, 21 Main Street, 2nd floor, Gloucester, Massachusetts.  Wendy Conquest, the co-producer of this film about bridging the divide between children and nature, will join the audience for a Q & A after the show.  Proceeds benefit Kestrel Educational Adventures, a local non profit organization that is creating bridges between schools and nature for the children of Cape Ann.  For more information, log on to www.kestreleducation.org.

  • Saturday, November 21, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm – Homes For The Holidays

    Fabulous homes in the Annisquam and Rowley Shore area of Gloucester will be open to the public on Saturday, November 21, for a self guided tour from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Some of these beautiful homes will be professionally decorated for the holidays. “Homes for the Holidays” is a program of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce Businesswomen’s Division.

    The Home Tour is being planned by the Businesswomen to support the Carolyn O’Connor Scholarship. Named for the first Chairperson of this active Chamber group, the scholarship benefits a woman who is changing careers or returning to the workforce after an absence and is in need of further education. The Businesswomen have given out four $1,000 scholarships since it was created in 2006. The group is hoping to raise enough funds to either increase the scholarship amount or the number of scholarships for 2010.

    Tickets are $25.00 in advance and $30.00 on the day of the tour. Actual tickets and a map showing the location of the homes can be picked up on the day of the tour at the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, 33 Commercial Street, Gloucester between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Contact the Chamber office at (978) 283-1601 to order your advance tickets.

  • Commonwealth Avenue Mall Call For Volunteers

    Volunteers are needed to water five newly planted trees on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall throughout the summer and into the fall.  Each tree requires 1/2 hour of watering once a week — about 3/4 to 1 hour of your time. Trees are located at the corner of Exeter (2), between Fairfield and Gloucester (1), and between Gloucester and Hereford (2).
