  • Thursday, June 24, 5:30 pm – Roxbury Bike Tour

    The Forest Hills Trust, in collaboration with Discover Roxbury and the Franklin Park Coalition, are planning a Roxbury Bike Tour on Thursday, June 24, beginning at 5:30 pm at the main gate at Forest Hills, 95 Forest Hills Avenue in Boston.  Ride to the southern reaches of Roxbury and tour historic green spaces: Forest Hills Cemetery and Franklin Park.  The cemetery was originally founded as a public burial ground in 1848 by the Mayor of Roxbury and is the final resting place for prominent Roxburyites such as abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, surgeon Susan Dimock, entrepreneur Joseph “Wally” Walcott, and arts leader Elma Lewis. After touring the cemetery, ride through Franklin Park alongside the 200-acre forest and catch the view from Schoolmaster Hill where Ralph Waldo Emerson once lived. At the end of the ride, purchase a light meal at the Golf Clubhouse and watch the setting sun on the terrace. Helmets are required.   • Thursday, December 10, 6:30 pm – Franklin Park Photohistory Book Signing

    Meet author Julie Arrison on Thursday, December 10, at 6:30 pm, as she talks about the research and issues she uncovered while researching, collecting photos, and writing the new Franklin Park book. She’ll sign copies which will be sold for $22.00 (great for holiday gifts), at the Franklin Park Golf Clubhouse, 1 Franklin Park Road, Dorchester.  Julie is talking about problems and solutions in park management and design over the course of the park’s 130 year history. You’ll learn about how city officials, the broader public, and the Olmsted and other design firms influenced the park’s different stages of development and growth.   • Thursday, October 22, 6:30 – 8:00 pm – Boston City Council Candidates Debate Parks and Open Space

    Hear the eight finalists for at-large city councilor discuss and debate issues impacting greenspace in Boston. It’s an exciting slate with two open seats and two incumbents who have a strong record of support for parks and the environment. Only the second time that open space has taken the center stage in a city election, October 22nd will help show how large, diverse, and broad the park constituency is in our city. Everyone – regardless of age, race, income level, neighborhood, or background – uses city parks, playgrounds, and outdoor recreation facilities.

    Four years ago, the first political debate on greenspace issues brought more than 150 people out to hear who would support parks. The candidates said it was the best attended forum that election season. The Boston Globe, the Phoenix, and many local neighborhood papers covered the event. A group of 65 park, youth, arts, sports, health, public safety, and community organizations signed on as sponsors showing the depth and breadth of the parks movement in Boston.
